IVAN & TB [where are the kids?]
« on: September 16, 2004, 12:25:00 PM »
I am increasingly disturbed by the apparent silence on the welfare of the Tranquility Bay kids.
The only comment I was able to solicit from a program parent was that those who need to know, know. However, from the perspective of one who does not trust the source of their information; I ask, Have they heard from the kids? Have any of them been able to speak with their kid?
Deafening silence on that point.
Treats to yank the thread from the moderator.
Another board not only wouldn't post the question; but also yanked an entire thread on a related board b/c it was started by the questioner.
This is disturbing!!

Can anyone confirm the kids are OK - all present and accounted for?

This question goes ignored and elicits angry responses.

Why ??
This is alarming!

Where are the kids and are they ok and how can you prove it!!!

The lines to the hotel were the embassy says the kids are, are up and working and have been.

But no one will answer the phone.

WHY NOT!!

You ought to be raising ten kinds of hell.

Are you compleatly lost to reason??

Dame people - How can you tolerate them telling you, you can't talk to your kid, under such circumstances??!!

program parents are just like program kids - they do what the program says.

BuzzKill raises an intersting point concerning the absence of information on children who were prisoners at Tranquility Bay.  Where are these kids indeed?  I know there's a rumor that the kids were checked in to a hotel in Mandeville, yet that information is old and Mandeville did lose a roof or two during Ivan.  Also, it's interesting that the most likely resourses (ie:  the US Embassy) don't seem to be providing even some basic info on this issue.

As far as the removal of information from the local website, and I assume you are referring to treasurebeach.net, you need to understand that the person who runs that site took the position a year or two ago, after going rounds with some guy who used to be in this game (Tisch or Titch) that Tranquility Bay was an out of bounds topic, and he seems to be sticking to his guns on that issue, despite the obviously emergent need to allow a free flow of communication about aything that concerns that community for the time being.

I've been listening to POWER 106 since IVAN hit Jamaica, and it is true that St. Elizabeth was hot hard.  I also find it shocking that Cable & Wireless doesn't provide unlimited calling services to all of the people out there, instead of enforcing their pre-paid cell plans, which are presently keeping people from making calls.  These people can't buy a phone card or call anywhere, but C & W doesn't seem to care too much about that.

I like the rumor that Jay Kay stayed with his ship during the storm.  Please, tell me another one (LOL).  These WWASP people are such criminals.  I hope the kids are OK.

You're surprised? WWASP has kids do all the cleaning and chores at their facilities. Saves the staff from having to do any work and WWASP doesn't have to hire any sort of cleaning crews. If the kids complain about the cleanliness, it's their own fault, right?

The only time WWASP does anything is if they're desperate to clean the place before a visit.

I'd like to know if the power is still out and if they have any potable water in the area....if not, are the kids getting assistance from the Red Cross? Perhaps one of the aid agencies can go in there and see the conditions.

Further more, if its true the TB compound lost a retaining wall - the place could slide into the sea with the next tropical storm to roll threw.

Do you suppose they will have the students rebuild something as vital as the retaining wall?

As far as can be told, no independent party has gone in and taken a census to assure all students are OK and accounted for.

If anyone has gotten word from the embassy or the Red Cross that this has been done, please post.

Please spare me Mr. Kays assurances. Worse than useless in my opinion.

For those of you that are unaware of the fate of the kids that were evacuated from Tranquility Bay due to Hurricane Ivan two weeks ago . . . According to a New York Times article dated September 26, 2004, Tranquility Bay is back in business and its 300 teenagers have been returned there in spite of the fact that the converted hotel sustained several hundred thousand dollars worth of damage when the hurricane hit.

On another note, due to Robert Lichfield's $1 million-plus contributions to Utah politicians this election year, a bill that would require state regulation of boarding schools for troubled teens was smothered after Lichfield lobbied key lawmakers. The measure was withheld by a few powerful legislators until the Legislature's clock ran out at midnight on the final day of the session.

Quit wasting time . . . find out the facts and take some action. An apathetic attitude doesn't even give you the right to complain about what you've suffered or lost. It only gives you the situation you have helped to create by inaction alone. As Eldrige Cleaver once said, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

Last, something to think about. For purposes of filing legal action, it is the law in every state [and each state has a statute pertaining to it] that for any personal injury suffered by a minor, the statute of limitations [two years in most states] does not BEGIN to run until your 18th birthday. So you have until your 20th birthday to file a lawsuit. Keep this in mind, as you may feel differently in the future about something you do not believe possible today. No matter what ANYONE tries to tell you, this is the truth. Ask any lawyer or do a little research yourself. This is something WWASPS cannot "smother". Surely, WWASPS' money can be put to better use than to line the pockets of Utah politicians.
