How did Straight deal with the gay issue?

Was the leader and staff and members open to gay kids in the group ? Could they discuss their sexual orientation struggles openly?

No. I was condemned for being bi, and was told I wasn?t feminine enough. Followed by being to I needed to wear more "pink" and other ridiculous things intended to make me feel shame and inadequacy, in order to further conform and/or submit.

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again.

Gay in Straight? Oh hell no that didnt fly.
Was considered a character defect..Which of course it isnt..
Not my thing but Im all for whatever makes anyone happy.
You are talking about a place that wouldnt let brothers/sisters talk to each other in some cases.
Say you...drank a beer with your sister once...well that makes her a druggie friend...and you werent to have contact..

Straight defied all logic and descency

Homosexual incidents were to be confessed (With feeling, dammit!)promptly to the group.

Miller Newton spoke of adolescent homosexuality as being "treatable".
To quote: "It's correctable"...

Homosexuality was another deviant behavior to be corrected. I remember especially the guys having to stand up and confess about homosexual experiences in front of the whole group. And of course got confronted and made to feel even more ashamed. As if having to share that with 300 confrontational and emotionally abused kids wasn't scary or shameful enough all by itself.

No there was definitely no acceptance or openness about being gay other than the staff being openly contemptuous.

Dr Newton used to say without any shame I might add, that our brains were dirty, full of shit and Straight was cleaning them and in that context they were brainwashing us. Washing our brains. With pride. Homosexuality was just something else to be cleaned up.

Babylon in all its desolation is a sight not so awful as that of the human mind in ruins.

We had a homosexual male in headquarter Straight in Pinellas Park.  He didn't graduate, I think he stayed there, however, for about six months though.

We also had a guy that would get smoke breaks because he was so addicted to cigarettes, this straightling didn't last more than a month cos he was a seasoned adult fresh out of jail and he wasn't hip to our bullshit.

Headquarter Straight had a higher rate of violence I betcha, not that I'm comparing anything.  Lots of people would get upset at favoritisms, but when the Senior staff said to accept and not discuss the gay male in group then we kept our mouths shut.

One person made fun of him being homosexual in group.    Some misbehavor was being confronted.  The misbehavor said "well at least I'm not gay".  Then the homosexual straightling got to stand up and spit and confront.  As he sat down after grilling the guy who had slandered him and was dissing our group, he added his final statement; "...And I'm not gay. You're gay!"  The group gave out a simultaneous "oooo" as if to kick the misbehavors ass even more or something.

Survivor of Straight Inc.  1985 - 1989.

I sure would like to know what the name of the Insurance company was that held their policy when I was in there.  Noone can find it anywhere.[ This Message was edited by: animals all of us on 2004-08-04 19:21 ]

I remember a young gay kid. He smoked some pot, but it seemed that his parents wanted him in Straight because of his gayness. Keep in mind that over half of the guys in group talked about "guy-guy" relationships or sexual experiences. This was shared in the past parts of rap with "how did I get here?" feelings.

It was a little different with the gay boy, because he still liked being gay and was confused upon confrontation. At first, he was confronted with the AIDS scare tactic. But later, after the lawsuits started flying probably, an executive staff member steered us into politically correct waters of tolerance about gayness. This female executive staff member was rumored to be bisexual or gay. Straight pretty much morphed from this point on to be almost entirely different than the old straight. It wasn't nearly as hostile. You couldn't get punched in the back for slouching in your seat. You were no longer allowed to motivate. I got out about the time it morphed. What's a little funny to me now is how I really resented that the kids that came in after me had it so much easier than I did. But I probably had it easier than the people before me did.

According to straight policy, everything was a result of your drug problem. Homosexuality was just a symptom of twisted values from the abuse of drugs.

You bring up a really good point here. It just didn't work if you weren't a kid.

The best answer to your question can be found by reading the 77 page OPINION BY EBY, P.J. MARCH 04, 2004. IN THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS OF LEBANON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, CRIMINAL DIVISION

I will be happy to fax it to you, or post it.

Understand the content of the report is of ADULT nature and would strongly caution allowing a child to read it without the assistance of an adult to explain the nature of abuse Brabley Martin suffered and why and how anyone could do this to him and us.

The best explanation I can conclude, would be to liken the systematic child abuse to a "NAZI" enterprise.

The information is shocking and Bradley Martin's experience regarding the "gay" issue is very similar to my own experienece at the "NAZI" Straight orgarinization.

It is very personal to me, Richard Bradbury.

The people who ran Straight, I peronally liken them to pedophiles, i.e.  People who enjoy exploiting children for their own motives.

**PLEASE POST A FAX NUMBER AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO SEND IT YOU OR SOMEONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO POST IT TO THE INTERENT.***

SEE http://www.THESTRAIGHTS.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE BRADLEY MARTIN STORY.

Thank you and thanks for your continued suppport through my legal situation Richard Bradbury, Tampa, Fl
