please call on me!
« on: July 27, 2004, 04:46:00 PM »
I am now studying counseling, this probably has something to do with my horrible time at straight, I don't know. Whatever the reason, I am now taking this counseling class, a class on drug and addictions. This is pure torture for me as the teacher, not to offend anyone in AA, but he's been in AA for 25 years, and there are enough similarities between AA and straight to make me cringe pretty much every time he mentions it. Moral defects, higher power etc.... Anyways, then last week we watched this movie on tough love, it was like some after school special about how you need to be tough with your kids to get them off of drugs. It was so pathetic! And the kid was only smoking pot and they were acting like his life was ruined. It was really sad. Anyways, tonight we are supposed to watch another film, called Say it Straight. It's supposed to be about adolescent drug treatment centers, I think a very positive take on the whole thing. I have decided...there's no way in hell I can sit through this! I am skipping school tonight for the second time in 3 weeks. I am exhibiting one of the first signs of adolescent drug addiction: skipping school. They better lock me up too.....

Ive tossed the idea around as well (Counselling) never thought about that aspect.
AA is a cult....it is ..Dr Bob and Bill W were both egotistical power hungry lecherous homewreckers..And that was after they were sober.

And I cannot stand to listen to their bullshit ..
Yes I was in AA for years..it was an huge waste of my time, but got me laid on more than one occasion. Sigh...

Hi Jane, Been a long time since you posted

I took a similar class years ago and had to memorize the steps and recite them all over again to pass. Pressure since I had forgot them all. Just block out what you don't agree with, don't put your degree in jepordy. I can tell you from exp. most in the field do support AA/NA. You just have to pick and choose your battles I suppose.

Have you disclosed to the class that you were in treatment? it was pretty weird taking a class like that because people who have not been in treatment just have no clue. I never disclosed I was in one.

am looking for people who survived Straight in Plymouth, Michigan. I miss a lot of people there and wonder what happened and would like to stay in touch.

Hey, check out Stanton Peele's new book, 7 Ways to Beat Addiction

Dunno if you want to suffer the slings and arrows of broaching the subject in class, but reading from a sane author might help you keep your grip while you endure all the stepcraft.

Please, please don't give up yet.  We went through Pathway as parents.  My abusive family history reminded me so much of Pathway. it was horrible but our daughter is alive. I know you probably won't listen to me but talk to a psychoanalyst, the only people who can ever help anyone is someone who has done their own work and they have. AA and treatment centers can not get to the really deep emotions.  Our mental activity is our unconscious mind and the quality is our conscious mind.   I hate to have someone give up on psychology and the wonderful things and help it can give.

Just wondering if your child was in the Michigan Pathways Program? I'm curious to know more about that place and if they run it like Straight since it's their spin off.

Hi, have we talked before about counseling? I think I know who you are. Nice to talk to you again   Yeah I did make some promise to myself I wasn't going to miss any more of this class, I just think God what if that movie for some reason is about straight, or what if it's just like straight. I probably would go off on how screwed up it all is and tell the teacher off or something. Every time I say anything in that class I just feel my pressure rising when the teacher responds with, AA is perfect, and kids are horrible and they need tough love. It's sometimes more than I can take. No I haven't told the class anything personal, I've just asked a few pointed questions that have been shot down for the most part. Trying to get anything but program language out of my teacher seems really next to impossible. I'm not giving up, just trying to get by with as little anguish as I can. Only two more classes and then the exam so I think I can do it.

Ummm, well if you mean I wont be locking any teenagers up in a facility that traumatizes them and takes away their ability to think for themself, then thanks also! Why don't you have kids and put them into Kids helping Kids or Safe, which I think aren't even the same thing exactly, if it's so harmless. They should be fine. No why bother, you can just sit on them all day and tell them how they are totally FOS and selfish and self centered. Everyone knows how good that is for your self-esteem! And it gets rid of all emotional problems, especially teenage rebelliousness which should be stomped out immediately. And if you are upset because I don't like the tough love program, well you can "discipline" your kids all day. I seriously doubt that will be as effective as some good communication that is understanding and sincere. Research has even shown than approaches towards alcohol problems that are NONCONFRONTATIONAL and very empathic are the most effective, which seems to me like, DUH. How people who take tough love approaches reconcile this with their beliefs, well they must be really smart to be able to reconcile the two, because I sure cant.

I got busted last year for having a miniscule amount of pot on me, and part of my "get-out-of-jail-free" action involved required going to 6 AA meetings. Gawwwd, I thought I would claw my ears off! If it does help people, I can't begrudge them that (different strokes, etc)... but myself, it just reminded me of that whole experience just a little too much. Except there weren't people standing at the door, ready to tackle me if I were to get up and leave.

I realized my teacher was going to also show a video, Not My Kid, that same night. I also realized this is based on a book written by Newton Miller and is about Straight! I guess my weird feeling about class that night was right after all. I am really glad I didn't go, I just dont think I could take watching that crap and remembering being locked up and treated like a piece of crap. I really can't believe this gets played in school to people encouraging them to put people's kids in places like this. This really blows my mind. I think I will write my teacher a letter or email or something explaining some things about the controversy of straight, but first Im going to finish studying for my final, which is obviously a lot of really good info that Im learning here.
