All payments to people "living off handouts" amounts to 14 percent of our budget. And this includes benefits to the aged and disabled, unemployment compensation, and retirement programs. Actual money given to poor families floats in around 3 to 4 percent of our national budget, and this includes programs for pregnant mothers that can't afford formula and to help keep children homeless.

On the other hand, Medicare and Social security accounts for 34% of our budget and slated to continually grow. Ever been to florida and seen where these poor old folks shop, live and golf?

In other words, your inflammatory comments are nothing but a red herring. This country has long been well able to afford helping the needy, but people like you turn a mean eye while  continuing to pile money and benefits on a group of people who largely don't need it, the elderly. My friend the financial planner has clients die all the time with hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in their pensions, yet they collect money way beyond what they paid in. This, moron, is a "giveaway program". Why aren't you outraged?

What we can't afford, and what is steering us into a major tradegy, is for the old folks to keep voting dollars out of the working peoples' pockets.

Dem vs rep has little to do in the actual world with "give away programs". Both parties are steering this country toward financial ruin.

fNo, she is right. many can work, most collect exponentially more than they ever paid in, many have homes in the north and in florida.

the needy elderly is a different topic. How come a good portion of my graduating college class is either unemployed or working shit jobs behind cash registers? The way the Replicans are running this country, you will soon have to have an MBA to work at K-mart, and a PhD to be manager. I don't belong to any political party, but this is bullshit. It's good that people are saying something smart on here instead of whinning about Elan.

You don't make 6 figures out of college you have to start at the bottom and pay your dues. Society and government doesn't OWE anybody! Work for it and quit crying about handouts. I love the resumes I get to review...especially the ones that list their Fraternity, those are the first ones I shit can. Being unemployed is frustrating but sitting on your ass crying about it won't get you to work. Sometimes you have to take a job you don't like to get one that you eventually will. Thats a lesson in the real world. I don't know if you are one of those Elanians that came from a privilged family but acting like a spoiled brat won't get you a job.
