An experiment for WWASP parents and others
« on: May 17, 2004, 08:33:00 PM »
If you are considering placing your kid in a residential facility that uses abusive behavior modification, or if you have your child friend or relativee in youth program - PLEASE subject yourself to the following experiment: Sit on the concrete floor of your garage when it is about 40 - 50 degrees outside, have nothing more than a sweat suit on, stare strait ahead for two hours. After the two hours ask yourself if any person should be punished in such a manner. Realize that your child will be punished like this for any arbitrary reason - like talking, standing, looking the wrong way, rolling their eyes. Imagine if you had to do this for 4 hours, even 8 hours a day. This is what some children are subjected to on a daily basis for any minor infraction. The United States signed the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Would you consider being forced to sit in a cold, small concrete room on the concrete floor for hours degrading, even painful. Seriously, if you did some of these things to your dog you'd probably be put in jail for cruelty to animals. Yet authorities, licensing boards and governments of UTAH and other states that host these programs allow this to occur. In my opinion these authorities should be removed from office because they are allowing children to be abused, degraded and inhumanely punished in the name of treatment. These tactics are used solely to brainwash, terrorize and change minds. That is why the therapists tell you that the "program" takes so much time. The only thing that possibly benefited me was that I was better able to appreciate my freedom and home life because I had just spent time in HELL.

Unfortunately, your last sentence is one of the major selling points program recruiters and admissions reps typically use ....

"Trust me, your child will learn to appreciate how good they had it at home" ... or,

"Trust me, these kids have no idea how good they had it at home, our program will teach them to value their freedom"

It's all b.s. of course, what child (or adult) wouldn't appreciate their freedom after being held hostage in some hellhole for months, even years?

Guess some parents really are desperate to control their kids and if they are being abused, well, it's not reeeeeeally abuse, just a spoiled kid crying wolf.

Yes, that damn entitlementitis these program parents love to rage about and conquer by shipping their kids off to some behavior mod program or just as bad, a faith-based program that shoves religion down children's throats.

HELL is the only word I can think of.  Almost any home, even an abusive home, would be better. People find it hard to believe that these programs treat kids like crap. Once you are there you realize there is no way out except escape or suicide.  They turn your parents against you and tell them that you are being a liar and being manipulative. Everyone knows this. They also read your mail and refuse to send letters that they feel are manipulative. Being in Provo Canyon School was worse than jail - worse than anything I can immagine. They are liars and they manipulate the parents.  Pretty soon parents become programed into believing that the program is good and right. They even start to believe that the punishments are fair. INHUMANE is the best word to describe what it is like.

Doll; you write:

This is one of the biggest problems the Program detractors face; The Legions of Faithful who believe absolutly that the program saved their kid; even if the kid has since committed suicide.

I wish your suggestion of the experiment would be taken more seriously; but the average program parent is not able to even consider the fact you are telling the truth.
