What are the 5 boroughs? And is a borough just a term for a neighborhood?

Manhattan
Brooklyn
Queens
Bronx
Staten Island (though it should probably be part of jersey)

No. Not a term for neighborhood. Each borough has countless neighborhoods.
Brooklyn: Flatbush, Dumbo, Redhook, Brooklyn Heights, Bed-Stuy, Cypress Hills, Cobble Hill, Carrol Gardens, ....
Manhattan:  Soho, Noho, E. Village, W. Village, Upper E. Side, Murray Hill, Theater District, Upper W. Side, Chelsea, Flatiron district, Tribeca, Harlem, Hells Kitchen...

There you have it.

I believe Brooklyn was actually it's own city and not part of NYC until pretty late ? maybe the 40's ? I can't remember exactly. Had their own baseball team (Dodgers.)

Wierd thing about living in Brooklyn (to me at least) were the people I met who lived there their whole lives and only went to Manhattan once a year or less, even though it was 15 minutes away by train.

So then a borough would be similar to a county?

Well,...kind of, but not exactly.

New York City is Comprised of:
1. Borough of Manhattan = New York County
2. Borough of Brooklyn = Kings County
3. Borough of Queens = Queens County
4. Borough of the Bronx = Bronx County
5. Borough of Staten Island = Richmond County

So is it really as crime infested as it looks on Movies?
How would you compare it to say Houston Tx or New Orleans as far as crime?

Don't know about Houston.

New York is the safest large city there is from what I know.

New Orleans on the other hand is the wild west. In the past 2-3 weeks there have been at least a dozen murders.

UPDATE: DECEMBER 15, 2003:
According to FBI crime figures released December 15, 2003 for the first 6 months of 2003, New York City remains the safest big City in the United States. Year to date, crime is at its lowest level since 1968. Total crime in the City has declined almost 5.5% from last year.

Of the 210 cities reporting with populations greater than 100,000, New York City was ranked 194th, between Ann Arbor, Michigan and Orange, California. Of the nine cities with populations of more than one million reporting to the FBI, New York City had the lowest crime rate during the first 6 months of 2003.

Over the course of the past year, the crime rate continued to decrease from what were already record lows at the end of 2002. The FBI reports that New York City?s violent crime rate is down 3.3% in 2003 compared to a nationwide reduction of 3.1%, and the City?s property crime rate is down 8.7% compared to a nationwide reduction of only .08%.

If you want crime stats go to and find state statistics or just google it.

Why do you want all this info on NY anyway?
