elan theory
« on: April 29, 2004, 07:45:00 AM »
yo, peeps..
i was at elan in the late 80s..in house 3. im now working on my master's degree thesis, finally after 10 years in school!
i have a theory that i'm trying to explore and this might be a good place to test it out.
tell me, fellow elan survivors, do you guys feel that the people that had it worst and today seem to hate elan the most, were mostly kids from well-to-do families. in contrast, the kids from poor backgrounds, ones that may have suffered abuse at home, seem to be the people that had good experiences at elan. was elan really better than being home? therefore, they had a positive experience?
oy..im so ferklempt....discuss among yourselves. i'll be back to pick up your blue books.
thanks, linda richman...professional student.

no idea in the slightest from what i saw, the class/money thing didn't matter much, i'm sure some people were affected by it and some weren't, like everything. I think from one point of view, poorer kids would want to do better b/c you've got nothing to go back to anyway; but the richer kids also do well b/c otherwise, if they don't make coordinator, they don't get to run daddie's comapny. However, i'd think the motivation for hating the shithole would apply to any class..... whatever, greetings from the middle

I think it was the rich kids who did better. The working class kids were less likely to go with the program, because they weren't as easily brainwashed and saw the place for the joke that it was. And Elan is basically the upperclass version of juvie, so the working class that I saw were more aliented because they didn't fit in with all the rich kids. I was sent to Elan when my parents first started making their money, so Elan was my first upperclass experience, and probably why I rejected that class, and why the majority of my friends and boyfriends after that have been working class after Elan, despite the fact that I attend a prestigious college. It's rare that anyone that I even have a one-nighter with is even in college or post-college.

That's bullshit.I don't know about the new elan, but when i was there the only people with any priveledge were the good lookin chicks that ended up being Joe's babysitters and such.Nobody gave a shit about social classes and acting pompous or like street trash would both land you with a sign around your neck or a costume. As far as who did better, nobody.Everybody I know from that place with the exception of Clair and Jeffery thought the whole concept was bullshit and were just doing what had to be done to get out.

You caught me nappin on that one.Jim is my freind and I don't like bringing him up around here for obvious reasons. My take on it is this.Jim didn't think enough of concept to change his lifestyle.I think it was probably more Claire's idea than Jim's because I know how women are about their children.I really don't know the details but when I asked Jim myself he said he never would have sent them if elan was anything like when we were there. This also makes me wonder if some of you newer residents went through the kind of stuff I did.I've asked some people around here,Jordan for example what kind of shit were you put through and the response is either go away troll or no response at all.Or call me,sorry I've never liked talking on the phone.Hate them things.[ This Message was edited by: xres8182 on 2004-04-30 10:04 ]

Get real of corse the rich kids had it better and did better us working class had to go back! WORKING CLASS DIDNT RANK AT ALL! You woulda had to be blind not to see it, at least when I was there HELL they built the rich kids a new house just so the parents wouldnt see what it was really like... This was during the time that the state of IL was coming in shit I think that house was built in the matter of weeks...It's so true elan knew where the money was and played on it big time! yeah its me! just in case ya wanted to know
