And what's the point of posting her e-mail? She'll just change it.  Nothing productive is going to come out of it.

I must admitt that Tania, out of all the staff members, has been the only one who's been caring enough to reply to my e-mails. I understand that not all the people feel the same way about her and I don't blame you. Although Tania plays an important role
in this system,  I do believe that she puts her heart into it because she believes that she's saving people. My problem is with the system, cause I think that it damages people in the process and there are way more cases of failure than success. Then, of course, I have a problem with some cruel staff members that abuse the residents, such as Peter Rowe and a few others that have been mentioned in this site. I don't think of Tania that way.

Weren't we told that we were more than welcome to call in after our graduation? How many of you tried to get in touch with staff members and then realized that they could care less about you? How many of you got a call back from any of the staff members? Not much, right? I appreciate the fact that Tania has shown some care and consideration in order to respond to every single one of my    e-mails since my graduation in 1999. So I'm thankful for that. I wish I could say the same thing about Kim and Jenn H, cause after a while, I just figured I'd better off quitt trying to get in touch with them. Maybe it was all about the money with some people, who knows?

I wasn't in 7, so I never really had a problem with Tania, she always said "hi" to me when I saw her. Even though I wasn't in her house, she did bother to learn my name for some reason, even though she didn't learn the names of too many other people outside of 7 that didn't get 3 house GMs and rings. I was in 8, so we had a bigger asshole to contend with, I'm sure you heard of Marc Rosenberg. Marc was nice to certain people, though, and sometimes he was nice to me, but not often. He did not demote people as often as everyone thinks, maybe it seemed that way because he yelled a lot, but the people who gave out the most demotions tended to be the female staff ironically. We had Jenn H. in our house, and I think she and Tina Christofferson  demoted the most people. I know you didn't have Tina, but did Jenn H. also demote a lot of people in 7 as well ?

People say horrible things about Marc Rosemberg, but quite frankly, I don't remember much about him. Actually, it's coming back to me, he addressed me in my 3 house GM.

Damn, I did have a 3 house GM! It's so weird that I've completely erased this memory from my mind and now it's back. Tania ran it, I don't remember why, think I was coming out of the corner. Marc was kind of nice to me, I guess it's because he didn't know me, he told me to clean up my mess and get back on track.

I was terrified that day, and embarassed at the same time; many people were yelling and spitting on my face... But I was relieved it was Tania, not Pete who got to do all the talking.

Jenn H was the director of X's at 8, right? She ran the Service Crew at 7 (she substituted Kim while she was on labor). Jenn wasn't there for long and I don't remember her demoting ppl. I guess she gained my respect because one of the only times that I actually did some real productive work in groups was with her and she helped me a lot. Then again, after my graduation, I've tried getting in contact with her many times and I never got a response.

It's funny to hear that the women staff were the ones who got to demote the most at 8. Pete was an expert in this area, but I guess Tania was too, since she geared the book and all.

Elan 8 had the reputation to be the most "confortable" house, is that true?

Marina, Elan 8 was probably the most comfortable house but much of the comfortability was filtered out over time by policies from 7 trickling down.  In my time, 3 was viewed as the corrupt house, 7 was the robotic house and 8 was the family house.  Sounds a little biased coming from me, but that's how we saw it.

When I was in Elan, I liked Tania but could not help but noticing how draconian the policies were in her house.  As I left Elan and continued to stay in touch with my sister who was in 7, I grew to really dislike Tania.  She said something to me in my sister's graduation that didn't bother me much at the time, but as I thought about it later, it infuriated me.  Still does actually.  I also can't help disliking her as I hear different stories from various kids who went through her house.  The bottom line is that she is in charge of many of the unfair policies and procedures that leave teens feeling hopeless.  I am an adult and although I've said less than nice things about Tania, I would be willing to sit down with her and articulate why I feel this way.  However, this will probably never happen.

Marc Rosenberg and I were very close and although we haven't talked in a few years, I still miss him.  I was stupid to put him on a pedestal when I knew him, but I think a lot of us viewed him with an almost cult-like status when we were in Elan because we were impressionable teens.  I feel like I know Marc better today and while he's very imperfectly human (like we all are), he's still a good guy.  People say Marc was vicious but honestly, the LEs he handed down were usually lenient compared to Clare.  When he geared the incidents, a lot of them were talking-tos.  Marc was a lot of bark and I think that made people dislike him a lot.  But once you got to know him, he could be really nice and generous.

I'll never forget the encounter group I had with Marc Rosenberg when I was in a three-month demotion to DH of SC toward the end of my stay.  I tore him to pieces and Clare told him he was being "defensive."  It was actually very productive and it helped us over an impasse at the time.  Marc ran the Service Crew and was a bitch to work for -- I'll tell you that much.

I still have a book Marc gave me at my sister's graduation.  It's called "The Zen of Recovery," and I still read over it from time to time.  It's really interesting.

Overall, Marc is a good guy -- at least in my opinion.  I respect those whose experience and opinions are different.

Yes, Pete I remember Amanda's graduation and I can see why Tania's comment might have made you feel unconfortable.

When Amanda and I came back to visit in the summer of 2000, it felt as If she had a pretty close relationship with Tania. I was so, so scared to come back and visit and at the moment we met Tania at the bus terminal, suddenly I felt "welcome". Elan didn't feel as scary then. At least I knew at that point that they weren't gonna keep me there so that made me feel relieved.

That visit broght me back horrible memories too, and that's why I haven't been back there ever since. Tania has just invited me to visit and quite frankly I'm considering it, cause now I feel stronger and it's important for me to face my fears and overcome my traumas about that place. Well, in order to make it to Maine, I'd have to fly to the States. Jordan assured me that the production would pay for my ticket in oder to participate in the documentary. I'm not counting on it, but If that happens, I'll probably pay Elan a visit as well.

What's up with this documentary anyways? Is it gonna happen for real? Is everybody gonna be in Philly at the same week, I mean, what's going on? I was hoping we'd set up a re-union, is this the plan? I'm afraid I won't be free till July, is July good for you guys? Jordan, please, speak up!

Marina,

Jordan told me we were gathering the weekend of June 26.  Maybe he can put it off if it's bad for you.  Email him.

I think I came after you left, but much of the policies coming down from 7 were largely helped in part by Jenn H., who may have seemed a lot nicer, but in reality, she handed out way more shotdowns than Marc R. ever did. The only people who he really shotdown tended to be problem people, and if you weren't a problem person, usually no more than 3 days tops. He tended to demote people simply to lower positions, like CT would be DH, SX would be XT, etc. And 8 was finally changed to the corrupt house, which was when the policies came over from 7 in full force.

I had no idea that the houses were so different, i can remember little diffrences from seeing 3 & 8 outside on the weekend, i remember thinking that they got away with a few minor things but i thought all the policies were the same, just not enforced as strictly. I really had no clue that they were that different.

Whit, no that was Jenn Emerson.  She married Drew Hibbard from 8 and they moved to Wyoming but wound up getting divorced shortly thereafter.

Jenn Emerson was kinda cold, but I liked Drew a lot.  I emailed with him a few years ago.

Jenn H. was Jenn Husman (sp?).  I was there for her as a staff member, but wasn't there as she got empowered.  When I knew her, she seemed pretty nice.  But maybe others thought she wasn't.
