looks good Animals - I think that using survivors names do not add anything to your statement.  I'd remove them if I were you.   Just my opinion.

You forgot to add that you were incapable of taking responsibility for your life and that other people had control over your behavior.  Shut up and got on with your life you pathetic excuse for a human being.

what's your problem buddy?  Obviously straight helped you greatly, I can tell by the empathetic tone of your posting.   Or most likely, you were never in straight and are just shooting off your mouth about something you have no idea about.

the truth is the truth regardless if you know my name or not.  the only reason you want to know my name is to try and discredit what I said, which you did not, by the way.  i find that interesting.  you must agree that you straight winers need to take just a little responsibility for your lives.  you guys act like you were just one day up and taken to straight for no reason   and when you were in there, you behaved perfectly.  despite your perfect lives, all these bad things were done to you.

you need to grow up!

buddy, my life is fine; I just think that before you judge someone, you should walk in their shoes.  I ain't whining about anything.  Just as I am responsible for my choices in life, so are the adults that preyed upon children for monetary rewards.  Straight wasn't free you know.  My parents didn't pay for the crap that I was subjected to.  Whining?  hardly.  I am a hard working, educated person, I make contributions to the communities that I have lived in and I still do.  I think if the folks who were adults when we were in straight took responsiblity then and now, we would be a lot better off today.  I don't think I can blame my hardships on Mel, or Betty or any of the other whacked out staff members that were in control when i was enturned.   But I do know that what was done to me as a 17 year old child does have a lasting impacts on my life.  I do know that I gleaned nothing good from straight, and I am who I am today IN SPITE of straight.

I feel sorry for you.  As I read your post, I picture a freaked out old man with a puffed up red face, crazy hair, with spit flying out from his mouth.   I wouldn't want to be you as you meet your maker.

oh, and by the way - even if a person used drugs prior to being in straight, and even if they were a pain in the ass to their parents and teachers, they didn't deserve to be treated as they were.

The you done the crime, do the time mentality is ok, just don't include child abuse and brainwashing into the mix.  That is one of the fundamentally flawed arguments that the drug warriors and straight supporters as well as many of our parents still use today.

For quite a few kids that's EXACTLY what happened.  Most of the rest of us were fairly normal teenagers doing fairly normal rebellious things.  Every time I hear this same stupid arguement that we did things to deserve being put in there it pisses me off on many different levels.  The first is that I don't give a shit if someone did drugs to the point of abuse or not....the cure should never be worse than the "disease".  These freaks that called themselves "Drs" or "counselors" were dealing with CHILDREN in a manner that was derived from Korean POW interrogations on our prisoners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Second, there were A LOT of kids that had no drug problem at all.  This was at the height of the goddamn drug war and parents who had kids that stepped out of line AT ALL were scared into thinking that if they didn't do something RIGHT NOW that their kids would die.  I mean, COME ON!!!!!  This brings me to the third reason why this bothers me...the majority of my friends that I hung out with before going into Straight were doing a lot more drugs than me and got into much more trouble than me.  I had smoked some pot and got into a little trouble with drinking.  Every one of those people I hung out with now lead successful productive lives WITHOUT all the baggage from a fucking treatment center.  I also have a perspective from BOTH sides of this issue...I'm the parent of two teens and both of them have gone through their own ordeals with drugs or alcohol.  I understand the fears of having a kid that is heading down the wrong path...it's the most frightening thing in the world......BUT....my job is to help GUIDE them through these times.  That comes from developing and nurturing a trusting relationship over the childs lifespan...setting limits and boundries, following through with them.  It also includes compassion and understanding for what they're going through.  These are some of the toughest times they'll ever deal with.  They are GOING TO FALL SOMETIMES.....IT'S LIFE...THEY'RE TEENAGERS.  They're going to do some of the stupidest, most frightening things you've ever seen....THEY'RE TEENAGERS.  They're going to be hateful and mean and moody....THEY'RE TEENAGERS.  They're going to have friends and boyfriends/girlfriends that we hate....THEY'RE TEENAGERS.  To lock them up, starve them, beat them, isolate them, and brainwash them into submission only serves aa a temporary (if at all) break in whatever undesired behavior is going on.  To have a truly REACH them, you don't BREAK them.  More and more professionals are finding this form of "treatment" rather barbaric.

We are responsible for our behafiors before and after Straight....but don't tell me for a second that those assholes had nothing to do with the psychological damage that I walked out of that place with.

and as far as you're "grow up" comment....Bite me asshole.  Either you have no fucking clue as to what happened in those buildings or you're one of the assholes who needs to be bitchslapped for the damage YOU did to people in there.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

Animals - Only recently having become aware of The Seed and Straight, I am appalled that the persons who exposed you and literally thousands of other kids to systematic abuse have not been held accountable.  Had they been made to answer for their wide-spread abuse of the human and civil rights of children, fraudulent business practices and other serious crimes, chances are the new generation of programs would not still be operating with near immunity from damn near doing the same thing!  Your letter points to many reasons why it is time for the state of Florida to stop ignoring the complaints of a generation of children - now adults- advocating for change.  Good luck and thanks for sharing your letter. I'm sure it was hard work recalling painful memories but hopefully, your effort will not be in vain.

A friend and supporter.
