Oh my god! I saw the author interviewed on Oprah. Someone tricked me into it, saying the show would be about the teen help industry. Didn't realize the connection till now.

This is just another scare tactic.

When a man you like switches from what he said a year ago, or four years ago, he is a broad-minded person who has courage enough to change his mind with changing conditions. When a man you don't like does it, he is a liar who has broken his promise.

Apparently, the book isn't as awful as its title suggests.  The woman apparently spent time with several teens with drug problems-- I think one went to a boot camp.

She did not come away particularly impressed with that approach, from what I've read and supposedly, she gets that this is not a simple problem with a quick fix.

she was interviewed in salon recently, i think.

Ginger, how did she seem on TV?

What parent resources does the author provide in Chapter 4?  Does she make any specific recommendations and/or endorsements?

Does the author get into the medicalization of childhood?  5 million kids on Ritalin?  Parents on Prozac or Paxil car-pooling the little ones to day care or elementary school before heading off to work?

Very gullible and very much a fear monger. I watched it with my 19yo daughter and one of her friends. They were incredulous and insulted. And these girls did live the life of which their families did not approve. Hell, we've only had my daughter back home again since July. She left home at 16 to go be the local weedman's bitch. Her friend bounced between her mother in Florida and and her sister here near the Burgh for most of her highschool career. She was completely incorrigible too. So it's not asif either of these girls have been cloistered or led sheltered lives.

The things this woman claims are going on right under the parents' noses simply are not happening. Kids brag and exagerate their adventures and exploits. Don't we know that? Didn't we all do the same thing? She just propagated all the same stereotypes about teenages that the rest of the Teen Help industry has been promoting for 30 years. If your kid has friends, craves privacy, does essentially anything on their own volition instead of just waiting for instructions, she might be carrying on a secret double life as a crack whore!!!

Here's a much more level headed, reasoned essay on kids ta'day.

http://fornits.com/wwf/viewtopic.php?to ... forum=22&0

If you want to know what kids are thinking and doing these days, do what Loretta Nall did. Find out where they hang out after school and go ask them.

http://www.pot-tv.net/archive/shows/pot ... -2313.html

(click on the link labeled " Play Realplayer (2231)" right under the big, bold words "VIEW NOW" and Available Files. For some reason, people seem to have a hard time figuring that out)

If you can hold your nose and get past the heavy pot culture motif at this site, you might be surprised. And you might wonder why, if everybody's so sincerely concerned with kids ta'day, and if marijuana causes amotivational syndrome, why is it that the potheads seem to be the only ones actually getting up off their butts and doing something about the problems they perceive in the world?

Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Here grow the wallflower and the violet. The squirrel will come and sit upon your knee, the logcock will wake you in the morning. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill. Of all the upness accessible to mortals, there is no upness comparable to the mountains.
-- John Muir

Why not? If she'll promote it on Oprah, she's probably trolling for people who will be impressed with sending their kid to the same gulag Rosanne did.

This year will go down in history! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!
