weird habits
« on: November 10, 2003, 07:34:00 AM »
While living w/non-straightlings, I've noticed that they think some of my habits are weird.
DO YOU:
Brush your teeth in the shower?
Need water by your bedside?
Catch yourself motivating at a confrence, or other place where you must be called on to talk?
Sweat horribly in the night?
Look people in the eyes when they talk to you and vice versa?
Can you read peoples emotions and call them on it?
Think it is necessary to talk about your feelings when ever relating to another person?
There is so much more.
I just thought we could have a little fun listing our STRAIGHTLING quirks.
Peace and tremendous love

Can't say as I've noticed anything like yours, which I found amusing but my husband always says that I talk to much about my feelings and if I get hurt by something and now that my our daughter talks about things that bother her and that she is very sensative he accuses me of turning her like that. Oh well. He is a typical man. Thats not to say all men, just most. And I'd say that the men that went through Straight are more sensative than your average guy.
I also have nightmares waking up and thinking that there is someone watching me or is in the room. This happens alot. My husband is so use to it he tells me its ok and falls back asleep, Lord help us if ever there is someone in our room.

Holy shit !!!!!!!!!!

Do not even tell me the reason I brush my teeth in the shower is STRAIGHT my boyfriend (ex) thought that was soooooooo weird you just tripped me out big time!
No water by the bed.
No motivating.
No night sweats.
I definately look people right in the eyes unflinchingly!
I am all over peoples emotions and definately call them on it if I don't like them or love them enought to care.
Do and don't talk about my feelings. Sometimes I hear myself start in with it and get annoyed with myself. Like damn shut up with you I feel...because

lordy lordy it never ends I am still stuck on the toothbrush thing!

OK then, I suppose I did take something worthwhile from the Program. My whole family brushes their teeth in the shower. Saves a lot of splash and mess around the sink basin and it's easier for the little one to rinse, since she doesn't have to stand on her toes to get her mouth to the water.

Yes, I do both of the above.  I don't think it's weird to look people in the eye though.  I was taught from an early age to look people in one of the two eyes instead of trying to look at their face.

I can tell instinctivly when someone is not telling the truth.  I can also tell how most people feel, even though they may deny feeling a certain way.

Well, there are different ways of looking people in the eye. When I was a kid, I was taught by example to do that, but in a way that projected confidence and genuine interest. At Straight, we did it in a different way, it was more of a challenge that made people uncomfortable.

I learned how to not do that pretty shortly after I got out. In fact, I think I remember being at least vaguely aware of how much I hated doing it and happy that I didn't have to do it any more once I was back in the real world. Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you how freaky that is along with the severly lazy eye.

As to knowing the thoughts and feelings of others, I used to THINK I was pretty good at pegging other people. But it started a lot of fights. Sure, I was a master at getting confessions. But that didn't mean I'd guessed right.

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.

I dont know if this is from straight, but, I notice around survivors I visit that they don't watch their kids that closely. Also, all the doors are friggin locked, even when I'm there, and then coffee is always on the beverage list. Soaking a pillow at night happens everyonce in a while...

The eye contact thing

it is staring at them like a challenge and I still tend to do it. I know this because I will just be looking at people and listening to them and they will be like "What?" all nervous.

Shit must have the cagey look on again sorry. Blame it on Straight.

at least I can laugh

My initial response was to sue her for defamation of character, but then I realized that I had no character.
