Why I got my kids the hell out of Florida

Not because of the drugs. If anything, they play with rougher stuff than Xanax around here. It's the JIF and the automatic referal to 'rehab'.

COOPER CITY STUDENTS HIT WITH DRUG CHARGES

Five Cooper City High School students face possible expulsion after
being charged at school Thursday with possession of Xanax, an anti-
anxiety drug.

"We have a zero tolerance," said Joe Melita, who heads special
investigations for Broward County schools. "It's something that we
don't take very lightly. ... There will be consequences if they make
the wrong choices."

Four of the students, ages 16 and 17, were taken to the Juvenile
Intervention Facility in Fort Lauderdale, said Cooper City Police
Capt. Marvin Stoner. The other was released to his parents for medical
reasons.

Three students are charged with felony possession of drugs and intent
to sell, Stoner said. The other was charged with simple possession.

"All the charges are felony, and they will be upgraded because it
happened in a school," Stoner said, adding that state law prohibits
the sale, use and possession of drugs within 1,000 feet of a school
facility.

The amount of drugs seized from the students indicated the possibility
that a sale might have taken place, Stoner said. He said investigators
were trying to determine where the students got the drugs.

Xanax is popular among teenagers, who can combine it with alcohol and
marijuana to get a bigger high. Stoner said it "makes you really
mellow and even lethargic."

Police did not disclose the names of the students, two girls and three
boys in 11th and 12th grades, because they are minors.

Stoner said the students fell under suspicion this week when the
school's resource officer and administrators noticed they appeared
under influence of drugs in class. The students were sleeping in class
and couldn't pay attention to teachers, who reported them to
authorities.

On Wednesday, officers gathered more information about possible drug
use during a junior varsity football game. The suspected students were
questioned in a school office Thursday, and arrested after they were
found in possession of the anti-anxiety drug.

Cooper City High has had individual drug incidents involving marijuana
and pills in the past, Stoner said. But this is the first time police
have arrested so many students in a single drug incident.

"It's very much unusual," Stoner said. "We've never made any arrest of
this magnitude in this school."

Melita said the students may not return to the school, although they
might be recommended to a special program for rehabilitation.

Ironically, the incident occurred about three weeks before the Oct. 23
drug summit, which is supposed to draw thousands of students to the
War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale.

Cooper City Commissioner Debby Eisinger, who serves on the high
school's advisory council, said her city has a reputation as a
wealthy, family-oriented community with great schools. But drugs have
no boundaries, she said.

"It can happen anywhere," Eisinger said. "It's a wakeup call for
parents to get involved in their children's lives."

of course, if it was Jebby's daughter, she'd not get arrested.  When she left the "treatment" program in Orlando, after she was caught w/Xanex, she didn't get any probation either.  Not that I think she should have, but it is a double standard.  You got money, and powereful parents, then the penalties are different.

That's pretty much true anywhere, any time.

"Laws are like spider webs. If some poor weak creature comes up against them - it is caught. But the bigger one can break through and get away."
-- Solon; Greek philosopher - c.630-c.555 BC

That's why the idea of limited government was such a cool concept.

That which does not kill you can make you stronger, but I really never needed to be this strong.

Ginger, your so right on all this. My family and I just moved down here to the Miami/Ft.Lauderdale area about 4 months ago. I left this state after getting out of prison for 5 years and after getting out of straight for 2 years, and have no clue why I should stay. After my work assignment is up here, I will relocate my family to a place where hopefully there is limited BUSH interaction. Hey moneys not the only thing that keeps you out of prison, if it were Tommy Chong wouldn't be there, I beleive it's all in how you "cooperate" with the man, and well too, a little cash never hurts.
Every time I see the DARE sticker or tshirt I cringe and my daughter is 8 and son is 6 and when they start introducing that crap into them, thats when I say, NO WAY. I'll teach my kids about that not the Semblers, they've already shown the failures.
Yea, I'll leave Florida once and for all one day soon, damn work!@#$%^&

If they try to put your kids in the DARE program, ask them to show you the authorization form you were supposed to sign to allow them to administer the program to your kid. Most school districts ignore the law on this, but DARE is not a class or curriculum, it is a psychiatric program. By law, they cannot subject your kid to it without your explicit consent in the form of a signed consent form.

Naturally, if you do this, they'll treat you like a misbehaver in Parent Group and your kid might get some taunting as well. So that's somthing to think about. But you might just find out that you're not the only misbehavers in group and your kid might wind up finding somthing in common with other kids who's parents are not going along with the program. But it's a gamble.

Everything that people say to you is personal. Whether it is constructive criticism or not will determine whether it cam from and asshole or not.

Hey thanks for the info, and I love this "Everything that people say to you is personal. Whether it is constructive criticism or not will determine whether it came from an asshole or not. ----Bill Warbis"
I guess when the whole DARE crap comes up, that's when I'll fight the battle, I know it wont be easy but we'll fight it. I'm going to search for states and schools that dont enforce it. Maybe they all do, I dont know, but boy your right I dont want the state administering phsyco treatments to my children and corrupting their minds, I can do that all by myslef:)
Hey, It's good talking with ya and listening to you.

I think you'll find an animated contest going on wrt DARE and other drug education programs. A lot of school districts are dropping DARE due to all the bad press in recent years. They either adopt a DARE by another name (just as Straight, Orlando changed it's name to SAFE and Character First! Changed it's name to Character Counts!) In some few, very socially liberal areas, they're adopting Drug Truth programs with slogans like "Just Say Know", which teach a more moderate philosophy, heavy on the medical/pharmacological aspects of the subject matter, but still with the social training aspects.

I'm with you on that. I don't particularly admire the characters and philosophy that have brought us our vaunted public school system. And I have absolutely no desire for them to impart their wisdom to my kids. But it's not just DARE, it's the whole curriculum and program. That's why we homeschool. Contrary to popular belief (said belief entheusiastically propagated by the fundies), most homeschoolers are a lot more like hippie drop outs than like foaming-at-the-mouth religious zealots.

Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.
