For Their Own Good
« on: April 16, 2009, 02:07:37 PM »
I cannot for the life of me find a link but I was reading the paper and came across this promo for a "special interactive presentation" called, "For Their Own Good".  The descriptor reads as follows:

Join us for a special interactive presentation, including:  Video, Photo Gallery, Historical Documents and much more.   Online Friday, April 17 on  Magazine.tampabay.com.

In Floridian Sunday, April 19.

FOR THEIR OWN GOOD

It was supposed to be a place to reform wayward young men.  But for more than 100 years, the Florida Industrial School for Boys was a place of nightmares for those who were sent there.

How could this happen?  What should be done? Those are questions that have been asked again and again about the reform school at Marianna, Fl, where boys went in troubled and came out destroyed.

Holy fucking shit!!!!!  Where the HELL was their outrage at Straight??  Where the HELL was their outrage when Ms.  Ambassadorable-I'm-a-fucking-child-abusing-whore received her honors for what she fucking did to us?????  I think we should definitely "join them" for this.

OH, THIS IS A GOOD ONE:

But contact the whole blog roll here

^^^ If some activist is willing to try, I wager the above blogs will cover this issue.

Though each day no one bothers trying, the less newsworthy this issue becomes. Anyone even bother trying?  Particularly Swing State project which is pretty much dedicated to getting dirt on Crist?

Kinda sucks that no "activist" even tries.

I whole heartedly agree with you Ms. Bonney. There were a few post (not so long ago) from an older man who survived the atorcities of the Florida Industrial School in Marrianna. Thier crimes? They were orphans! He described a building, I believe it was called the "white house" which was used almost excluselly (sp) for the systematic sexual abuse of the boys incarcerated there. And from his recount of that time period was absolutely horid.

The danger here is that of "one up manship". It would be easy to say these young men had it far worse than we did. Or vice-versa. Fact of the matter is, abuse is abuse is ABUSE. Florida has a long standing reputation of such abuse towards it's younger population, from the days of Marianna, to the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranches, to Seffner (where I was threatened with before Straight Inc.) to the most recent closing of the Boot Camps because of the beating of a particapant.

And of course this continues on to the penal institutions. Remember the Orient Road Jail in Hillsbourough County where a whel chair bound individual was thrown, or rather dumped from his wheel chair to the cement floor of the jails recieving area. More recently, I believe it was Rafford prison where 5 Correction Officers where dismissed after a video tape caught the 5 pummeling an inmate. If memory serves correctly, the 5 were dismissed and another 4 recieved writen reprimands. It's sickening.

As a public, we are more and more aware of the atrocities that take place in our insitutions. Yet by in large the average member of the public doesn't give a shit. And the subject line of your post illustrates the vast puplic opinion "They probably desrved it" and "It's for thier own good"

In a country known for "freedom" we have the largest prison system. In a country known for it's generosity, children are systimatically warehoused for months, if not years. It is simple to blame the Justice System, the Courts and the ones that enforce such laws. But is it not the blood thirst of our own society to lock um up and forget about them? Then releasing them to an unforgiving society that shuns them...no jobs, no skils, no housing, no form of credit established, no voting and ultimately treating them as second class citizens or less.

Our society, en masse, elected our officials, which make the draconian laws, delegates it's powers to the one that enforce the laws. And as if that is not enuff, sub-cultures of this society develop programs like D.A.R.E encouraging children to avoid drugs and turn in thier own parents to the legal system....which now thrusts the child into the hands of the state. And as the shortage of quality foster homes dimminish, these same children are placed in Marianna type facilities, Seffner (now defunct I believe), Florida Sheriffs Boys/Girls Ranch and the Eckerd Camps, Wilderness Camps, Boot Camps etc. etc. etc.

Generally an optimistic person, I fail to see how anything positive, or live changing for the betterment of our youth can be acomblished thru such tactics. Yet on the other hand, there are some that see this massive industry can make huge amounts of money and so they have an opportunity to generate a profit at the failings of our own society and do litle if anything to "rehabilitate", but only to re-incarcerate, which in turn creates another opportunity to generate a profit and so the system continues to grow. The bottom feeders, the Semblers, the Bush's and other cretins not only stand to profit, but get a feather in thier cap....get ambassadorships, are honered by state and federal officals.

When Jeb Bush's daughter was busted for drugs (or was it alcohol) and was sent to a drug rehab....where was that? Who ran that facility? Well, knowing the cronisim tween the Bush family and the Sembler family...my guess would be Jebs daughter went to a nice lil island retreat in the Carabian (sp) owned by the Semblers...and I would bet my last doughnut her record was immediately expunged before "treatment" began....For her own Good.

Really, I love my country, but fear our goverment and the elitists that rule this great land with an iron fist to dig into thier deep pockets, deeping the great divide tween those that have and those who have not.

Much Healing

They were screwed-up kids, sent to the reform school in Marianna for smoking, fighting, stealing cars or worse. The Florida School for Boys -- that'd straighten them out.

Fifty years later they are, by their own account, screwed-up men -- afraid of the dark, unable to love or be loved, twisted by anger, scarred by the whippings they endured in a cinder block hell called the White House.

good clip.  Well produced.  I hope the lawsuit is sucessful.  Anybody watching that should take note of just how long it's taken for those kids, now adults, to come forward.

What's the story with Crist?

http://tampabay.com/specials/2009/reports/marianna/

'Gov. Charlie Crist has ordered the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate 31 graves near the school. "Please determine whether any crimes were committed and, if possible, the perpetrators of these crimes," Crist wrote.'

Check out the orangetoiletnews.com library and read some of the affidavits from victims of Straight.

They are posting more stuff soon.

Straight should be next on the list.

With CRIST in charge?  I don't think so.  Are you aware he was a Seedling and in bed good with the Semblers?  I'll be surprised if he does anything of note with Dozier.

I know it's probably just a coincidence, but did anyone notice the name of the guy who runs Marianna now??  Frank PETERMAN!!  (Actually, that's scary for me on two levels)  At least that's the guy they quoted as saying that they "do things differently" now.

I posted a comment (so did Ray apparently...mine hasn't been "approved" yet).  I also wrote to the Times staff writers that did the article, asking that they continue their work and look further into the industry as a whole.  I also said that I hoped the Times would finally grow the balls (I said guts) to take on the Semblers and Straight.

Infamous school for boys will shed the Dozier name

By Waveney Ann Moore and Ben Montgomery, Times Staff Writers
In Print: Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Change is coming again to the state's oldest reform school, a place with such a long and ugly history some say it can never be fixed.

Most significant for hundreds of men who were abused at the school over the decades, the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys will shed the name of its former superintendent. Dozier has been named by several men as one of the former staffers who wielded a leather strap and beat boys bloody in the 1950s and '60s.

"Arthur G. Dozier does not need to be honored for what he did to the children of Florida,'' said Roger Kiser of Brunswick, Ga., who is 64 and still tormented by memories of being beaten.

The name change is just one of the fixes being proposed at a place some insist should be closed altogether. The school was the subject of a St. Petersburg Times investigation, "For their own good," which detailed a century of abuse and neglect and showed that in 2009 the school still broke bones and bloodied noses of boys in its care. The school failed an annual state evaluation twice in recent years and has scrambled to improve with a new superintendent and revamped procedures.

Now faced with budget cuts, the Department of Juvenile Justice plans to consolidate the school with the adjacent juvenile correction center, creating a smaller facility that can better serve boys with special medical and behavioral needs.

Darryl Olson, assistant secretary for residential services, outlined the changes, which he said will shave about $2.5 million annually from the school's $17 million budget.

• The school will merge administration, medical care and food service with the adjacent Jackson Juvenile Offender Correction Center, which serves the worst offenders. The complex will be called the North Florida Youth Development Center.

• The capacity of the school will be cut to 151 beds from 199. All 32 juvenile sex offenders will be relocated to other facilities starting next week.

• Sixty-four staff positions will be eliminated. Only 27 of those positions are filled. Those employees will be transferred to other state jobs.

• One cottage will be dedicated to developmentally delayed boys who need behavioral treatment. Medical care will be expanded so the facility can serve boys with complex conditions.

Child advocate Jack Levine, who has crusaded for better care at Dozier for decades, sees "glimmers of progress.'' He's encouraged by the specialized services, but by his calculation the state will still be spending about $100,000 per boy per year.

"The renaming is one obvious recognition that the institution's history is checkered at best and negative at its core, so I would say, let's go the extra mile and see if there are community-based providers who would offer specialized treatment that is perhaps more appropriate.''

Olson said the changes were prompted in part by budget constraints, "But more importantly, it was the right thing to do for kids.'' Smaller facilities have proven to be effective nationally, he said.

Dozier has been plagued with problems since it opened more than a century ago. In 1903, investigators found kids chained in irons. As the decades passed, promised reforms never seemed to stick. Last year, Kiser and other men came forward with their stories and put the school back in the spotlight.

For Kiser, the changes are a kind of victory. "We feel as though we helped get something done," he said.

Anne, Miller's not but Schwartz is still involved since Newt was there in FL and he's the one that did all that "research" on us Virginia folks. I'd bet he's still got kids' files in his basement. Check this link... http://globaldrugpolicy.org/aboutus.php I'd be fixin to subpoena his records if I was worried about it.  ;)  RG
