Allen Cardoza / West Shield Adolescent Services
« on: January 31, 2009, 08:11:21 PM »
Y'all probably know much more about this guy than I do, but I think that it's time he gets his own thread.

West Shield Adolescent Services

This firm is far more than a simple transport service. Founder Allen Cardoza is also a P.I. who specializes in locating and returning runaway teens, and he has a talk show on LA radio where "troubled teen" issues are discussed.

West Shield is, moreover, quite chummy with IECA, and also makes EdCon, Psych, and Legal referrals.

"Specialty Programs" noted on West Shield's Resources page are:
    • Abundant Life Academy
      [li]Mount Carmel Youth Ranch
    • Red Rock Canyon School
    [/li]

We have a datasheet about this firm. I believe that Caroline Wolf from CEDU worked there years back.

I'm not sure exactly when she started there, but the following piece was published in April of 1995...so it must have been some time before that.

TEENS AND TRANSPORTATION
by: Caroline Wolf
West Shield Adolescent Services
800-899-8585

(Caroline Wolf was a counselor at an Idaho boarding school for 11 years. She is now a team leader Transport agent with West Shield Adolescent Services.)

When I was a teenager, I remember when my parents hired an escort service to transport me to an alternative therapeutic boarding school. The transition to a new environment, the unknown, was extremely fearful. From this experience, I know the importance of compassion and respect that it requires in dealing with teenagers.

Because of my successful experience with caring counselors and consultants, it became clear that my mission in life would be to work with kids in trouble. With a sense of clear purpose, I became dedicated to the process of early intervention.

After twelve years of working with troubled teens, it has been my experience that the beginning process of an adolescent going to any type of program entails key ingredients in successful delivery. Those key ingredients are:

1. Prepare a personal profile of the adolescent and then match with a transport agent whose background is similar.

2. The bonding process. By letting the child know that we are working for them as well as their parents while reassuring their safety and well-being.

3. Honesty. This is critical in moving the child into the frame of mind.

4. To help the child recognize how their situation has reached this point of transition.

5. Preparing the child for the program specifically chosen for them.

With this personal knowledge and experience, it was easy to make the transition into working as a transport agent for West Shield Adolescent Services.

One of my first experiences with transports was with West Shield Adolescent Services Ollie Perkins. Ollie's training and support gave me confidence and validated my abilities that I would be effective working with adolescents in a crisis situation.

From the training I've received from West Shield and my own personal experience, I recognize the need for highly skilled, effective, professionals in all aspects of adolescent transportation, intervention and retrieval.

I''m not quite sure what other agencies require for their training, but I believe a successful transport starts with continuous training in adolescent needs, and above all, the ability to rationally work with individuals involved in a crisis situation. Because every case I've dealt with is different, I believe one should treat the individuals involved (adolescents & parents) on a personal level. When it comes down to it's just people helping people.

About half a year after the above piece came out, she was promoted:
Quote
Seen 'n Heard  - Oct, 1995

West Shield Announces New Full-Time Manager
Al Cardoza, President of West Shield Adolescent Services announced that Steve DeTata is the new full-time manager responsible for all operations. Ollie Perkins and Caroline Wolf have been promoted to field directors. In addition to performing field work with adolescents, Ollie and Caroline will be assisting with case intake, training, and marketing. 800-899-8585.

By 2001, she was back to working in programs, with people she had worked with previously at CEDU. I'm not sure how long this lasted; I seem to remember reading that her involvement with New Horizons was quite brief. (Fwiw, this particular program closed recently, citing economic factors.)
Quote
Seen N' Heard April 2001

NEW HORIZONS WILDERNESS PROGRAM
(March 30, 2001) Caroline Wolf announced the grand opening of New Horizons, an all-female wilderness program based in Orrington, Maine, 207-992-2424, nhwp@earthlink.net. This five to eight week program will open in June of this year. Wolf, who has worked with the CEDU Schools and Second Nature, is working with Jacqueline Danforth, who was associated with Rocky Mountain Academy (A CEDU School). Both were graduates of Emotional Growth schools. They assert this "is the first East Coast all female program of its kind to be located in the healing, rural landscape of Northern Maine. It will be located in Maine at the 'Gateway to the North Maine Woods'." Further developments will be announced in Woodbury Reports' "Places for Struggling Teens" newsletter.

A bit late, aren't you Ursus? If we had gotten this one earlier we could have mass-contacted Sam before this interview even happened. You find any more interviews with Lon or any other fuckclown, let us know in advance, k? :)

Yeah, sorry about that. Had a lot of other stuff going on at the time.

You should keep in mind then, that Cardoza has a lot of these kinds of interviews on his show. He's a one-stop shop: EdCon, transporter, P.I., runaway locater, and...local radio personality who is perceived as an expert on "teen issues."

Allen Cardoza's show "Answers for the Family" is on every Monday at 11:00 am (PST). Some of his guests seem relatively benign, others, not so much. I haven't been able to find a schedule of upcoming shows; he might announce them on his BLOG. Archives of previous shows here: http://latalkradio.com/Allen.php

Oh what the fuck. Sorry. Thought he was on the other guy's show. Contacting THIS motherfucker would do about as much good as talking into a toilet.

"Having escorted thousands of teens to specialized schools and programs, returned hundreds of runaways and retrieved many abducted children,"

I call bullshit by two orders of magnitude.

Yep. "Over 11,000 successful escorts!"

The main reason I posted re. Lon Woodbury's appearance on Allen Cardoza's radio show was to demonstrate how chummy the two were. Cardoza is chummy with a lot of IECA people, it would seem...

Here's an older story which appears to inform that Cardoza attended an IECA conference in Arizona in November, 2003. Check out his compatriots in the photo:

Aspen Education Group pledges $100,000 to IECA Foundation

(From left to right) Len Buccellato, Allen Cardoza, Elliot Sainer, Jared Balmer, Brooke Dudley, Lynn Luckenbach, and Ed Kowalchick celebrate the generous contributions given during the start of the 2004 Annual Giving Campaign.

The IECA Foundation is pleased to announce that Aspen Education Group has pledged to contribute $100,000 over the next four years. The contribution has been earmarked specifically for consultant and counselor training as they work with youth in the midst of making educational decisions. The formal announcement was made to the IECA membership and school, college, and program representatives at a luncheon held during IECA's Fall Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona on November 7.

According to the Foundation's Treasurer, Jason Katz, "This contribution will be extremely helpful in allowing the Foundation to continue its work of giving grants to those worthy students who need additional resources and guidance. A big thanks to Aspen!"

The IECA Foundation will sponsor a workshop on learning disabilities with Dr. Mel Levine in Boston on Wednesday, April 28, 2004. A portion of the Aspen gift will be used to fund this workshop.

Okay, here's an upcoming show: Randy Oakley, CEO of Aspiro ("wilderness adventure therapy"), this coming Monday. I wonder how much of this show (50 min.) is devoted to call-in questions and comments?
