I just read a post about OP in tranquility bay and how they would make a person sleep on a hard floor with a flourescent light on all night, and  I remembered reading in the Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn, about how part of his torture by his soviet captors was just this exact tactic!  One more connection to big brother collectivism.

Yep torture and brainwashing have not changed much. Its amazing what kind of otherwise minor annoyances, like not getting enough sleep or eating the same bland food everyday can become very efficient torture techniques when taken to their logical conclusion. You don't beat someone into submission it doesn't work because at some point their mind shuts off the pain. Its like boiling a frog, if you throw a frog in boiling water he will do anything to hop out, but if you put him in cool water and slowly heat it up he will let himself die.
