As far as I can see, "owning the problem" goes back to 1935's AA, which got their information from the Christian Bible.
Bill Wilson's first set of steps consisted of 6 steps, the first read:
"Admit we were licked, and that we were powerless over alcohol."
Which in turn is from the Christian Bible. "To Confess" sins first before we can be healed.
Which means it's typical of totalitarian societies. They want the people to confess, so that the "owners" of the society can first know everyone's faults and weaknesses, thereby being given the power to exploit them. Next, the confessions give the "owners" an omniscient appearance.
These rules play out the same way in life.
Um, yeah, we live in a "program world." Of course it plays out in businesses and life today. This crap has been going on forever, but with a special emphasis in the U.S. since post-prohibition. (1930's).
