First Annual Conference for Program Survivors

What:  The First Annual Conference for Program Survivors
When:  February 22-24, 2008
Where: Las Vegas, Nevada


Everyone is welcome -- bring your friends and family!

Suggested Admission is $50 to cover the costs of hotel rooms and materials and such, but this is only suggested, there will be nobody watching the door, just an anonymous donation box. No shame if you can't spare the money, nobody will know. There will also be a room or two open for everyone to crash if they don't want or can't afford their own room.

Speakers will include such famous names as:

Friday Afternoon

Getting to know everyone drinks and socialization time in the lobby, moving in time.

Friday Evening

Group dinner, first program survivor speaker.

Friday Night

Party on the town


Saturday Mid-Day

Second program survivor speaker. Group lunch.

Saturday Afternoon

Bill Cosby addresses the group about family values

Saturday Evening

A former program parent speaker addresses the group

Saturday Night

Party on the town

Sunday morning

Brunch with Patrick Steward, and why Federation values apply to today's world.

Sunday Afternoon

Final program related speaker, goodbyes and departure.



Who is putting this on?

We are a small group of dedicated program survivors. We do not have an online organization or entity just some young people who want to meet some other people who were in a similar situation and hopefully turn this into a national type thing. Meeting people in person breeds more trust that hopefully can lead to some sort of movement and a real life organization capable of real action.

We look forward to seeing you there. Be there or be square!

Might be a better idea to hold it somewhere that won't be so expensive.   You might get a better turnout if you hold it somewhere other than in a dedicated tourist destination.  Just my .02

Good luck though!  Hopefully I'll be there.

I understand your concerns. [/u]From my location Las Vegas is cheap by flight I thought it was a central airline hub or something, since it is a common tourist destination that is one reason. Another is because they have cheap hotels. Another is because you can walk around on the street with your drink-- an often overlooked fact in destination selection. Another is if people get bored they have shit to do. If it was in Bumfuck, Kansas it would be too much like a program and too weird like a reunion or some shit. Show up for five minutes and leave - WHO GIVES A FUCK. Come high or drunk. I guess it's kind of like asking if a tree falls in a forest and nobody around to hear it does it make a sound? [/color] If enough people show interest we get a conference room or something. This is an idea stage I just tried to dress it up to get people excited is all. If you aren't excited[/color]- CHECK YOUR PULSE CUZ YOU DEAD HOLMES![/color]

If you really want Bill Cosby, you might as well ask him. He might do it as a tax write off. I'm curious as to why you want the coz? What makes you think he'd be interested, or even has an opinion on the issue? I'd think you'd have a better chance with say maybe that Dave Chapell guy. And why Patrick Stewart? (I still can't look at the man and not think of Sir Janus.) Does he actually have an opinion on the issue?

I'd personally Love to come to your party :) That happens to be close to our 25th anniversary - might make for a fun celebration. But money is extremely tight right now. I'd have to wait and see how we fair a little closer to the date.

If I am in any way financially able I'll be there. Now I'll be probably one of the more tame people there - despite the best efforts of the program I was in, I am still straight-edge mostly. I drove all the way to NYC for the Over the GW premiere (ok, I had other reasons to be there too), I'm sure I could fly down for the weekend.

In the face of growing concern and criticism over the speakers originally billed for this event I must sadly inform you that unfortunately Bill Cosby and Patrick Stewart speaking fees are out of our range at the moment. [/u]I hoped that such high profile names would bring lots of people to hear about a cause they normally would not care about as well as get people excited about the idea of traveling so far.

So this forces us to re-evaluate the structure of the conference. At the moment we do not have any ideas for who to invite as speakers. Our budget for (2) speakers can be about $500 a speaker so that should cover their flight and hotel. The reason we want speakers is so we can videotape the speakers and make a montage of them and upload it to Google Video to help promote next year's conference and share information on abusive programs for anyone who Google's it.

We hope to have two speakers to replace Cosby and Stewart. I am being maybe a little optimistic but maybe Kathryn Mulgrew of Voyager or Avery Brooks from DS9 would come. If they came, it would get a lot of attention because there are a lot of Star Trek fans that would come and promote it.

Another idea for speakers is former staff. That would be insightful and dramatic enough to draw viewers I suppose. But the bigger the name the more the news coverage if any, and also helps promote the conference next time to grow it bigger each year. [/color]
So my theory is if people start to meet in real life and network that they will start to build a network of trusted people who can coordinate and act when necessary.[/color]

It will be a celebration! A celebration that we did not succumb to the brain-numbing ideology of programs and have made it to the promise land .. Lost Wages.. er Las Vegas, the Sodom and Gomorrah of the Program religion. I can't think of a more perfect place to hold it! *LAUGH OUT LOUD*

Oh fear not - I wouldn't dream of trying! ;) To kill the buzz, that is.

I would love to come. There is also a conference in June, in Philly, I want to attend tho -  I don't see how I could do both.  But who knows - maybe it will work out.  

The idea of a meet and greet is a good one. I once belonged to an internet group that met once a year for a sort of conference. It was intended to be educational, with speakers either from the group or someone with expertise in our common concern - but it was mostly a big party.  The first time I went I was nervous as a cat, but that soon passed and I had a great time.

Have you thought about inviting those who have written on the subject?  (Alexia Parks/ Maia Szalavitz / Julia Scheers)  Or a few of the more active activist?  Ginger comes to mind. The Earnshaws. Barb Stamps maybe.

Maybe someone with expertise in cult groups and coercive persuasion? A psychologist maybe, with an interest in the dangers found in the kind of Synanon based treatment, these programs all use to one degree of another. Maybe the people at the International Cultic Studies Association could help with that.

Could be any or all of these folks would just not have the time to get away - never mind the cash - but its an idea to think about.
