sometimes the staff have bad days and can be extra annoying...but guess what? they're human. thats no reason to be humiliated on the world wide web.

i wasnt at hla "back in the day" when restrictions only got a cheese sandwich or whatever, but i heard stories. if any of those stories are true then just let me say that hla isnt like that anymore. i didnt love it there but it was liveable and i even made some friends along the way.

i know im not gonna change yalls minds about the school, but dont  be so cruel towards those that did their best to make things a little better there.

Anyone who's been on one of these places can read between the lines.  Placing people in a position of that much authority and control over children is never good.

Now I have to side w/ Just Graduated here. Take the long view of the whole HLA saga. I sincerely believe that the original big break in this story had to do with HLA thugs initiating an FBI and GBI complaint against a very clean cut ROTC boy some time ago. I could be wrong, I don't have any direct information you guys haven't got (and not nearly so much as some of you have). But I remember that incident, it scared the shit out of the boy! The boy was enrolled in school there at the state college, looking forward to becoming a damned Marine upon graduation. His interest in the industry derived from having had a girlfriend go through the mindfuck and come back home obviously very damaged. HLA tried to present this all American poster boy out to be one a them thar dangerous, disreputable, troubledteens to the jarheads on campus at the college. Well I guess they hang socially w/ the many jarheads who had worked for HLA. I think HLA lost a significant segment of their community support by attacking this good kid in such a way as to play damned Marines for fools. A few of these guys suddenly had an attack of scruples and started talking to authorities and/or the public.

While they may have worked for HLA and done evil things at the time, they actually are not and never were entirely unforgivable monsters. Then there's DJ and Gook and Clarke Poole and a few other former staff who have done more than any of us ever could to help expose these cults.

I still have no desire to try and stifle the satire, even the really obnoxious shit, I do see Recent Graduate's point.

RG, just take it for what it is, angry satire intended to be offensive and, probably more than that, to push the envelop with regard to protected speech. Nobody actually thinks Len is the model for Goat Ass. Everybody knows he's a fat fuck, not some skinny old dude with a wedding band and rather impressive uncircumcised cock. And I'm sure some of the people currently involved have some decency to them. Maybe it'll show one day when they come out from under the brainwashing. Oh, and I think you should take Deborah out for a nice steak dinner if you're ever in her neck of the woods. She's probably almost entirely responsible for pestering the local authorities to actually enforce the laws on nutrition and diet at HLA. Damned unreasonable woman, that Deb!

Someone ought to take him aside and say "oh hi, this is actually hurting these kids pretty damn bad, the place cannot be saved, gtfo". sure HLA aint as bad anymore. i mean you're allowed to have ipods now arnt you?! for me my biggest problem was not being able to listen to music. but my biggest problem of all with HLA has not been solved. the problem of literary censorship. 9 out of 10 books i sent myself to hla got sent back. most for only fleeting profanity or drug/sex references. along with that, many books that they simply didnt agree with got sent back. among them was books on wicca, rastafarianism, communism, THE 9/11 COMMISION REPORT, the disinformation series, GLBT books, artist autobiographies, and books on indiginous shamanism. i bet the only thing you can have on your ipod is contemporary christian. i remember asking cheryl ballow (the one turns sideways to walk through doorways cuz her ass is so  fat) what kind of music is approved for donation into the jukebox. she said "gratefull dead, jimi hendrix, late beatles, jefferson airplane, ozzy osbourne, and janis joplin" anything else is O.K as long as there are no drug references. when i asked why those specifically, she said "because those artists are known to do drugs". pity she didnt realize half the stuff in the jukebox already was by drug-doing artists.

is HLA physically abusive? not unless your going through an intervention or group consequence P.T. is it emotionally abusive? depends on your counselor. lace henson, yes. steve sorrels, no. mentally abusive? always. the intelectual starvation you go through at hidden lake beats anything i've ever had to go through since....and i've been through some tough shit since hla, oxycontin and methadone addiction/withdrawl, being violently assaulted, etc.
