Al Gore III Arrested for Possession

Think they'll require him to go to rehab? Thought it interesting that all the drugs on him were rx. Maybe his mom shouldn't have pushed the mental health/psych drug agenda so passionately.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) - Al Gore's son was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs after deputies pulled him over for speeding, authorities said.

Al Gore III, 24, was driving a blue Toyota Prius about 100 mph on the San Diego Freeway when he was pulled over at about 2:15 a.m., Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.

The deputies said they smelled marijuana and searched the car, Amormino said. They found less than an ounce of marijuana along with Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, which is used for attention deficit disorder, he said.  All rx drugs.

``He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs,'' Amormino said.

Gore was being held in the men's central jail in Santa Ana on $20,000 bail.

Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for his parents, did not immediately return phone messages to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The son of the former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee also was pulled over and arrested for pot possession in December 2003, in Bethesda, Md., while he was a student at Harvard University.

He completed substance abuse counseling as part of a pretrial diversion program to settle those charges.

The youngest of Al and Tipper Gore's four children and their only son, Gore lives in Los Angeles and is an associate publisher of GOOD, a magazine about philanthropy aimed at young people.

This is the second time he was arrested on a marijuana possession charge. Police in Montgomery County, Md., pulled over Gore in December 2003 and noticed the smell of pot and open windows and sunroof despite the freezing temperature.

Gore and his two male passengers at the time were charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana and released. Gore was also ticketed for reckless driving by North Carolina police in August 2000, and military police arrested him for drunk driving near a military base in Virginia in September 2002.

I didn't realize those hybrids could go that fast. If only they could make them look more liked a car instead of go-kart they might just catch on.

Unless his was modified, he had it pretty well wound out at 100. The speed record in a Prius is a little over 130 mph, but it was substantially modified.

But hey, he was helping save the planet by burning less gas and more weed.

I always feel for the kids of politicians or high level public servants when they get into trouble like this. This kid never asked for his dad to be a former VP. He should be left alone

Don't feel too bad for him. The privileged class in America always gets special treatment. It's the rest of us who have to spend multiple paychecks on lawyers, fighting against the War on Drugs, Zero Tolerance, and dumb-fuck school officials who couldn't teach a hungry wolf to eat raw meat.

I have nothing against Al Gore jr, and I'm impressed that he could get his Prius up to 100 mph on a San Diego freeway -- hell, I'm happy if the traffic is light enough to let me do 75 when I'm there. But he lives in a different American society than the rest of us, with different laws and different consequences.

Well, we will probably get to see his 7 months in rehab just like Baldwin.  How exciting.  Can' wait.  But Primetime comes first and foremost.

Al Gore's son was charged with felony drug-possession charges and lesser offenses related to his July 4 speeding stop, authorities said Friday. And a law enforcement source tells PEOPLE that Gore had 140 Vicodin pills and "dozens" of other prescription drugs.

If convicted on all charges, Albert Gore III faces up to three years and eight months in prison. But state law makes him eligible for a drug diversion program instead of incarceration, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

His arraignment is set for Aug. 1 in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Gore, 24, was pulled over south of Los Angeles in a blue Toyota Prius around 2:15 a.m. July 4 for allegedly driving more than 100 mph.

Police previously said officers, who had searched the car because they detected the smell of marijuana, found prescription drugs including Xanax, Valium, Soma, Vicodin and Adderall, as well as a small amount of marijuana. No prescriptions were present, police said.

The amount of medication wasn't revealed at the time, but the source tells PEOPLE that Gore was carrying 140 pills of Vicodin alone, along with "dozens" of the other medications.

Gore was arrested and taken to the Orange County Jail's Intake and Release Center in Santa Ana, where his older sister Sarah bailed him out with $20,000 cash. His father later said that he was "getting treatment."

In all, he was charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of marijuana, and a speeding infraction, the DA says.

The former vice president's son has a history of encounters with the law.

In August 2000, he was ticketed for going 97 mph in a 55-mph zone in North Carolina, and had his driving privileges suspended.

Two years later, he was cited for DUI in Virginia. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year's probation.

And in December 2003, Gore was arrested for marijuana possession in Maryland after he was pulled over for driving with his headlights off. He was sentenced to drug counseling in that case.

A Gore family spokeswoman had no comment.
