I wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to TBFight.com over these last few years and helped spread a little more awareness about these issues.
It has recently come to my attention that Tranquility Bay is closing (hopefully this will end up being true); therefore I'm not quite sure what to do with the site anymore.  The people who have visited and contributed to the site have made it what it is.  It's been a great resource for the last few years and a lot of time and thought has been put into it by many different former enrollees, parents and the general public.
So, I'm asking the same people who have made it what it is to help me decide the future of it.  A few ideas I have:
1) Archive it
2) Continue to operate but mainly as a resource for former students to get in touch with each other.
3) Merge it with another site like anti-wwasp or cafety or fornits or the like.
4) Discontinue its existence.

I'm here asking for ideas. Thanks in advance! It's been a great experience.

Yeah, I heard the same thing but not sure if it's true.

When did all this come down?  How come there has been no press reports or annoucements?  Did JAY KAY decide to close it or was he forced to?

I think you should keep the site up for awhile.  These kids will need you!

Archive it
« Reply #2 on: June 28, 2007, 03:51:36 AM »
It should be archived for a number of reasons:

1) Like the KZ-camps TB represents a dark period in history that never needs to be re-invented. Humans are always looking for the easy way out when solving a problem and instead of fixing it, we like to see it moved from our eye-sight. We don't care if someone is hurt in the process. As long as it is gone, we are fine.

2) These places often seems to reappear under a different name with new management but the same concept.

3) The victims should be honored. They have to live with their experience and have to show their future family why they sometime can not sleep, so their relatives can understand where their nightmares comes from.

So archive it. If the price becomes a problem, I would be happy to find a place in Denmark, where it could be preserved for some years.

Archive it at the very least Charlie. But if possible keep it going as an active site. Like you said - as a contact point for those looking for others who have been through the same thing.

I know it can be expensive to keep a site up; and I guess if it seems like it will get little use it seems like a bit of a waste - but I do think its a good site to have up if you can afford to keep it going. Personally, I wish more would do what you've done.

I stand amazed at the creativity that so many have and how it is used to express so much reality concerning theses Teen "help" issues.

If possible keep it up. So few people know of this industry. Add something reminding people of the other wwasp schools still in existence. Just because this was the worst does not mean that the others are a picnic

In my opinion
I think you should keep it up as long as possible.
At least as long as you feel like at least there is of course no obligation. Judging by this forum though survivors from programs 20 years ago are still coming out of the woodwork. The healing takes a long time in this stuff I think a lot of people just don't think about it and then one day get a flashback and google. So A website helps a lot with preserving information. I think you do a great job, why not preserve what you done?

in my opinion: Keep it open.  Survivors are bound to be coming out of that place and some of them might want to speak out... maybe not immediately, but sometime.  Tranquility Bay may be closing, but I doubt it's memory will ever die in the minds of so many who suffered.

Not to toot my own horn, but if you do decide to archive the site, there is a hidden forum on my site (Struggling People) for survivors.  There is also one for parents (which not even I can see since I am not a parent and haven't put myself in that usergroup).  A lot of people find it easier to speak privately in a setting where it is "just us" rather than publicly, subject to the critique of the masses (and trolls, insensitive parents, ed-cons, staff, etc...)  It's not about speaking out as much as it is speaking about.  In any case, if any survivors who have registered for my site are interested, they should contact me to gain access.

Exitplan (oreos/springcreek...), Rachael, and myself are moderators of the survivors section unlike the rest of the site where moderators span the full range.  Karen and Goldenguru moderate the Parent section.

Keep it open, specially if he's still going to accept zero tolerance.  Kids coming out may need the resources.  It's a wealth of information and resourcing to everyone.

Please keep it open.

Zero-tolerance kids remaining at TB?
« Reply #11 on: July 04, 2007, 01:52:53 AM »
I don't think it's closing. If I'm reading the letter from Jay Kay correctly it will remain open for Zero-Tolerance kids.

Here's a link to the letter:
http://jaykayletter.blogspot.com/

Dear Parents/Guardians and Friends,

In order to alleviate any more rumors we felt it was time to notify everyone what is happening with Tranquility Bay. We have had a great 10 years and our staff has been tremendous. We could not have accomplished anything without your support and dedication.

Financially TB is at a time when change has become necessary. With this in mind we have thought long and hard about our options. The best solution we have come up with is to basically transplant our Program to Gulf Coast Academy in Mississippi. I have personally visited the facility and find it to be well suited for our kids.

Tranquility Bay will continue to deal with Zero Tolerance kids from other programs. As you know the new passport requirements have held up many, many enrollments. We are confident over the next few months that parents will get their children passports.

We would ask you to contact Gulf Coast Academy as soon as possible and arrange for a transfer of your child. The contact information will be sent to you tomorrow by your Family Rep. The BBS makes it difficult to put in phone numbers as well as web addresses.

I will certainly be involved with the Gulf Coast Academy school to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible. In addition to this Dr. Chappuis has agreed to assist in a smooth transition. We are hopeful that some of our staff will be able to work at the school as well. Clearly this will assist everyone.

We do not see this holding any students back, in fact, they may be able to move a little quicker.

Again, we appreciate your support and look forward to a smooth transition in this new venture. Remember, change is a good thing.

Thanks and Love,

Jay

Thanks for the notes guys -

I have decided to keep it up - I consolidated all my sites onto 1 server, so if the spambots don't use too much of my bandwidth, then I should be fine =)

Anyway, I ran into trouble migrating the server, so there's a new look, and I did away with re-posting news about TB and WWASPS. Instead there is only student/parent/staff writings and forums.

That's all - just wanted to give a minor update ---- Have a nice 4th!
