Good news!  I hope the GAO is investigating the ed cons and referral agents, and their partner advocacy websites.  It's about time something was done to stop this crap.

The smart money bets with you.  Sen. George Miller will be a key figure in this, and if you've seen the Montana PBS special, you know he's been battling these programs for twenty years.  The GAO is very concerned at the moment and we can expect more than minimal effort.  Remember, the troubled teen industry and the Republicans have been entwined for ages.  Democrats control Congress now, Sen. Miller is in charge of his committee, and Psy's right, watch and be pleasantly surprised.  Expect some of us to be in D.C. during the hearing as more than observers.

Wonder how the GAO investigators will/are reacting to reports of certain "AVOCATES" writing blogs that bash parents; even to the point of writing disgusting poems; and blogs that support closed down facility and the owners that have crimnal histories in three countries...and even bashed a highly respected advocate whose daughter died in this industry?

Could someone explain what policing powers the GAO has and how this will help?

I'm asking out of curiousity. My own opinion is I don't think the GAO can really do much about it other than to submit some suggestions to congress.

Do bear in mind I also have no idea what the hell I'm talking about either.

The GAO is collecting documentation to be presented to Committee members as well as gathering witnesses to testify at a hearing in September.  

The GAO is the investigative arm of the United States Congress and their involvement will most certainly have an impact on this industry by stimulating interest in and passage of Congressman Miller's bill H.R. 1738.

Bear in mind, this bill is by no means complete.  It will be undergoing many changes due in part to the GAO's report and the hearings.  

While it's not the pancea to ending institutionalized child abuse, there is no doubt whatsoever that this industry must be subject to uniform regulations.  

Ed Cons, Transport Companies and Child-Advocate-Referrers will all come under the spotlight - and rightfully so.

BTW - this investigation is not focused on WWASPs exclusively.  Far from it.  The investigation is about the entire troubled teen industry and related services.

The hearing will prompt national interest and attention.

This is in NO WAY good for any orgs. or individuals who have skeletons in their closet, so to speak, because of the potential for them to be exposed in a very prominent, public venue.

That's just common sense.

They've been almost unaware of the abuses in the troubled teen industry.  They were made aware two weeks ago, by parents we're familiar with whose children died in programs.  They were horrified, and you see how quickly they've responded.  All I can say about that for now, but later we'll be able to put a date on a very key event in shutting down this bullshit industry.  It'll be a date I'll celebrate every year.
