Quote from: ""hanzomon4""
How do adults end up becoming cult members? It's a mind game of control and some people are really good at it. It's shocking that adults could become victims of such outrageous crimes, but when it comes to authority some are more conditioned to submit while others may be scared to death to disobey.I remember a story about a preacher who would go around starting up schools for troubled kids with strong "christian discipline". He actually sexually assaulted this ladies daughter right in front of her. She was too scared to protect her daughter because she was raised in a strict catholic setting and feared disobeying a priest.

There is heavy conditioning to defer to authority from birth. It's not limited to religion and 'cults', unless society is one big cult.

Remember the fiasco that happened at a McDonalds? Check it out. Unbelieveable!!!

Yeah I remember that, that was actually the first case that compelled me to do more then just read about it. I sent a short a letter of support, learned a bit about federal law, and I'm still boycotting Macdonald's. I never thought that this kind of stuff happened before but after that case I got more involved here and now the news just gets worse and worse. But can't be apathetic just gotta keep on keep'in on.....

I would argue that this evil private school was not a cult at all. it was an insane place run by an evil man, but it was perfectly upfront about its disgraceful practices and beleifs and therefore the mum who allowed this guy to strip her child and beat her is to some extent culpable
she knew about the schools corporal punishment policy.
it was the kids first day so she had not been slowly indoctrinated over time
yet she stood by and let it happen.

Well she had been conditioned to fear/submit to the authority of a priest, is that indoctrination? This Wetton guy would go around the US and the UK and start these schools with local churches, I think Catholic churches I'm not sure. But the mother didn't know about this sexual abuse at first, in fact only the kid victims/survivors knew. I don't understand the mothers fear or conditioning but I understand that some folks turn into spaghetti when forced to defend themselves, or children in this case.

I feel about this lady the same way I feel about program parents, I don't know whether to hate.... really dislike them or pity them. I think that religion stands on the head of a needle on the "cult" "not a cult" pendulum. Religion has power over a lot of people and if a person chooses to use it to take advantage of others you'll have nightmares like the stories Deborah linked to. I'm not saying that these women were members of a cult but the same dynamic was in play.

It's not just that the mother had been personally "conditioned to fear/submit to the authority of a priest," but also that the general acceptance of society around her towards religion and priests was and is very accepting as well.  This adds another layer of disbelief that what is happening in front of you could possibly be so very very wrong.  Same thing with the McDonalds case... you interact with these people day after day, they seem normal, you may even like them.  So you question yourself for questioning them...

Notwithstanding the lapse or delay in appropriate action on the mother's part at the time, she didn't take long after that to assist and stand by her daughter in bringing that cretin's existence to the authorities' attention and in (hopefully) bringing him to justice.  Which is more than one can say for some of the other parents of other girls abused by him...

So true about the extra layer of societal reinforcement.
