19 yr Girl Escapes Judge Rotenberg Center
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:13:36 PM »
"A 19-year-old Brooklyn woman fled a Massachusetts school for behavioral disorders and has been missing for more than two weeks, police there said.

Shante Evelyn, described in a police report as violent when confronted and suicidal, jumped out of a bathroom window on April 14 while she was believed to be showering.

Evelyn had been living in a home in Mansfield, Mass., owned by the Judge Rotenberg Center about 20 minutes away in Canton.

According to the report, she had been there for about two weeks.

The center has been under scrutiny because of its controversial electric skin-shock therapy.

"New York State Regents decided earlier this year to restrict New York students from receiving shock and other forms of "aversive" therapy.

It was not clear Monday whether Evelyn was undergoing any aversive therapy. Center officials and her parents declined to comment.

Mansfield Police Det. Frank Archer said it is believed Evelyn was picked up in a vehicle by someone she knows and is in the New York/New Jersey area.

Archer said it was not clear what she may be wearing, as she probably changed clothes in the bathroom. He described her as 5-feet-6, 125 pounds, with brown hair and eyes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Archer at 508-261-7301."

I pray to God this girl makes it.....

I have no idea, but I'm going to find out...

Do any of you folks have any legal advice on what could be done to protect this Lady. I'm going to do some digging around but I'm totally lost because she's an adult, restraining order against her parents? Or maybe a court appointed guardian?

I swear sometimes I wonder,
Am I trying to swallow the ocean, or drown in it.?

I don't know the reasons for her 'incarceration'.  If the family has placed her in this facility through the court systems, there is little that can be done ... unless the court would reverse their position.

If a person (adult person) is deemed a danger to self, the family has the legal 'right' to institutionalize that individual.

The court almost always leans in the direction of the 'concerned' family.  Especially if the 'mentally ill' person has a history of psychological issues (ie: violence/ suicidal ideation).

At this point, the girl would probably need to petition the court to prove/disprove her mental capacity to make rational decisions.

Its a warped system huh?

It seems that a persons parents can be appointed as guardians by the courts. However a court could decide to appoint an independent guardian. If the parents of this person has been given guardianship status then it must be on record somewhere. Perhaps some concerned official could search for any court records that pertain to this lady and petition the court for the appointment of an independent guardian. Anyone can petition the court to appoint a guardian but one would need to be able to show up in court, which leaves me unable to do anything(I'm at the bottom of the boot).

EDIT: I think I found someone who may be able to help.

I can do it.  I'm free until the 21st of may and on Sundays after that.  If this girl somehow does find us, or you can get a court date, I will take the day off and drive up regardless of class or not.  I'm allowed to miss 2 classes and my attendance is perfect normally.  Plus, teachers at my university know about this issue and realize I am doing something important.

I called the number, It's a Massachusetts police department. I left a message asking for any updated information.

@ Psy, if I can find out where she is or if she's still missing I'll definitely let you know and I'll start collecting money to petition the court. A lawyer, Kenneth(or Ken) Mollins, representing a family in a lawsuit against JRC is from the same area as the girl, so I'm going to try and contact him.

It's funny they describe her as violent when confronted and suicidal.  If I was in a place like that, i would be too.  I think anybody would be.   I really feel sick after reading that report.
