Catherine Freer advertised on Australian site

http://www.development.tas.gov.au/sport ... links.html

You will note that the dept for sport and recreation in Tasmania have listed CF amongst the other wilderness therapy programmes which are  voluntary and/or specifically based on the principal of first do no harm. I somehow get the feeling that the taz govt is blissfully ignorant of the  3 recorded deaths at CF. it would prolly help if many people flipped them an email telling them just how therapeudic and fun CF is for teenagers in the US. The good people of Tasmania are paying to advertise a death camp!

http://www.geocities.com/dr_adventure/impell.html

I found this even more disturbing. This is the subtle kind of distorted language that allows programs to disguise forced intervention as 'choice' by using the word 'impel.'

Yes indeed. There is a very fine line between force and impel and the AEE doesn't mind crossing it.

What makes these pompous asses think that turning the introvert 'inside out' and the extrovert 'outside in' is intrinsically valuable to that person? Could it simply be traumatic.

The article throws around cliche's and loaded language and assumes dozens of unproven hypothesis. Talk about junk science!

::bump::

I thought I would bump this topic. The good people of Tasmania seem to be under the impression that this is some kind of loving hippy summer camp for kids with addictions. I emailed them and got the sort of kind polite reply that crazy people always do when they write nonsense letters to govt. Australian tax payers are providing a free advertisement for a place that lets tree limbs fall on kids and kill them. Please people flip em an email to tell them otherwise. They are more likely to listen to those who live in the country that this sort of shit occurs in. You dont want the Tasmanian govt sending kids here do you?
Cheers

actually i know alot of people in australia. Lots. If you give me info about the place and what you want sent to australia I can get like 40 people to email it.

Australia is not America, - or rather it is like america 30 years ago. They still have this quaint little interest in human rights , before the cooler badder  "get tough" postuing came to be so en vogue among the more regressive elelments of society (regressive as in pre magna carta traditionalists) who seem to occupy half of our lovely little country (let me be wrong please)

post every thing you think should be said and ill make sure it gets emailed.
Threats about voting agsint interested politicians if they dont comply with protecting children sound good? Your the boss. just spell it out

I am not sure how many Australians you know who are Tasmanian as they are the only ones here who can vote a state govt in or out. Still the more people from both Australia and abroad who contact them the better. Tasmania in particular has a good record on human rights. It is also under a labor govt which in theory is the left wing party.

The person to contact in this case is the premier himself

The Honourable Mr Paul Lennon
his website has a feedback section i suggest you post there as i could not find his email:

http://www.premier.tas.gov.au/feedback/

The dept concerned is

The dept for Economic Development and resources. (this is under the premiers portfolio)

I would recommend the feedback be along these lines depending on whether the author is American or Australian.

I notice that your sport and recreation website has a section of useful links which recommend wilderness therapy camps and programmes. many look excellent. I notice that amongst the reputable programmes is a link to a US programme called Catherine Freer.
You may not be aware that this camp is run on a purely for profit basis as are most of its counter parts in this country.
You may also not be aware that at least three young people have died in this programme due to the negligence of its staff.
it should also interest you to know that unlike most of the sites you have listed, this programme run primarily on a tough love philosophy and involves therapeudic precedures which breach the patients right to confidentiality. There is no guarantee that the on the ground staff who work with the underage young people are adequately trained to do so. While their bosses are, such people are not always in direct contact with the children at the camp.
Many of the so called therapeudic precedures are a direct breach of the UN declaration of Human Right as well as the Declaration on the Rights of the Child, both of which Australia has signed.
With this in mind I urge you to please have this link removed from the department of Sport and Recreation website.

If anyone has any suggestions by all means add them

OK THAT sounds about good. I thinki know some people who have residence or part time residinece there or people who know people who do

im thinking that its also good to have links to survivor accounts and articles dealing with the deaths, or some articles that critisize the catherine freer type bondage experience or catherine freer in specific..The links you have up arent working for some reason..are those links to info like that?

do you know where i can get info like that.
its best to provide first hand and specific info, otherwise we seem like just folks giveing our opinion
"oz girl" hmm are you austrailan based? (just caught that)

I live in Australia (Victoria) and would like to, at the very least, send out some letters to public officials, members of Parliament and the press (Especially the local Tasmanian press) informing them of the Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Program. Does anyone here have any hard facts/references etc I could incorporate into my letter? Also, is anyone here good at writing letters?

Thanks in advance,

F
