I don't know how much knowing your son's medical/mental health history earlier would have changed the path he ultimately took. Unfortunately, there is only so much that medication and therapy can do for many of our kids.

Our son showed anger management problems at the age of 4 and symptoms of depression at 7.
We took him to many therapists and tried several medications at an early age, but none of that helped him in the long run. I suspect that addiction was an issue with his birth family. But even if I knew that ahead of time, I don't believe that we could have prevented his self-medicating with drugs.
A huge issue in our society is dealing with teenage drug use. Drug rehab simply doesn't work for them. It took 13 months at a tbs for our son to realize WHY he self-medicated and chose to make bad decisions. Will this be enough to prevent him from going back to using drugs to cope with his issues? Only time will tell. Part of it is that they eventually mature on their own. One of the keys is to keep them safe while they figure things out.

Our parenting style did not help our son and contributed to his issues. But after hearing stories of others who have multiple biological children, raised with the same rules, that turned out differently leads me to the conclusion we were not at fault for our children's decisions. Knowing that, has helped me to let go of some of the guilt that I have felt over the past 18 years. Also, being told by our son that he needed to go to a program has also been helpful. He has learned to take responsibility for many of his actions.Of course, he still likes to blame others when things go wrong, but to some extent, don't we all? We try our best, and hope that is enough.

Schools in favour of fingerprinting pupils

Schools in Preston have welcomed the idea of fingerprinting pupils at lunchtime.

Lancashire County Commercial Services are looking to take the project to schools across Lancashire following successful trials in West Lancashire.

It works by allowing pupils to pay for their lunches by putting their fingers on a fingerprint reader instead of carrying cash round with them.

The healthier the food they choose the more points they receive.

Human rights campaigners criticised the move, saying it was "totally unnecessary" to fingerprint children to get them to eat healthily.

But schools today said the system would work "brilliantly." Several are vowing to investigate taking up the systems in the near future.

Liz Laverty, headteacher at Walton-le-Dale Arts College,said: "We are investigating this fingerprint technology and we are hoping to move to a cashless system in the future.It can also give a print out to allow parents to see what their children are eating."

My g'son's school accomplishes all those things with a simple account.
No fingerprinting necessary.

Board gives girl green light for tinted hair

The Chicago Heights principal who told a student with red hair highlights to go home has been overruled.

The school board that oversees Sandridge School voted Wednesday night to allow dyed hair -- providing it's not a distraction.

And 13-year-old Holli Boam was allowed to return to school Thursday without having to get rid of the highlights.

"I'm good with it," said Principal Leroy Coleman of the school board's decision.

Coleman said he was simply trying to be "proactive" and avoid taunting from other students when he made the decision that Holli should go home and rinse out the hair dye.

I was thrown out out of junior high.....twice.

I am stil not exactly sure why, no one is I think.  My mother and principals met with the Superintendent of my district and he actually walked out of the meeting, telling them they were wasting his time when they couldnt even provide a list of what I had done wrong......they just didnt LIKE me.  I held the record for being in In School Suspension some 23 times in a semester, all three day stints....each and every one for not attending detention that was given for being less than a minute tardy to class.  

I liked being in Suspension, I could do a whole days school work in three hours and then read or listen to music.  My grades were phenomenal, and I even won an award for being the most athletic girl in my grade.  I just hated class.  They didnt know what to do with me, so they tried to make me a behavioral problem.  I was randomly drug searched...tested for developmental problems, etc.
