Dear Parents and Consultants:

Recently, we noticed an increase in the number of negative incidents in our medications dispensary. As we all know, degrees and certifications do not automatically make an organized, responsible employee. Personnel are consistently evaluated and staff changes made if we see no way of correcting the situation. All health-related organizations have negative incidents occur, but we always endeavor to address the issues and make changes in order to move forward.

Joe Stapp is now acting as the Dispensary supervisor. Joe is an Assistant Headmaster, clinical supervisor, and a former peer group counselor at Hidden Lake Academy.

In order to minimize errors and continue to provide quality care for the students, Joe is looking to implement the following changes:
Blister packaging medication in order to help with better medication management.
Acquiring delivery service from the pharmacy with whom HLA contracts.
Increasing communication among the dispensary staff in order to better coordinate dispensary duties.
Begin a more formal process of tracking dispensary activities to catch problems before they occur.
Begin cross-training assistant counselors on Dispensary duties to ensure adequate coverage in the Dispensary.

I can't imagine that the incidents have been any higher than they have been for the past three years.

My child sometimes wouldn't get the correct meds or receive them way past the time he was supposed to receive them... the people handing the medicines out didn't have a clue what meds the kids were on or when they needed to take them. He'd have to tell them they gave him the wrong meds or he was missing meds. There were kids that went days without medication because HLA failed to get their prescriptions refilled. Then they tried to pin that one on Dr. Reddick saying she forget to give the kids refills. Bull. The driver who took the kids to her office forgot to turn the prescriptions into the school.

One time a boy went for 4 days without any meds. It wasn't until he talked to his parents that they found out he was out of meds. Another girl had a reaction to one of her meds and went for 10 days without a replacement med because HLA failed to get her to the psychiatrist for an appointment.

What happened to the new nurse they hired? Now HLA wants to train the Assistant Counselors to hand out meds? Is that legal? Unbelievable.

Training the Assistant Counselors to pass out meds would probably be an improvement. I suspect that they have passed meds in the recent past with no training. Legal? Maybe. Ethical? Now thats a different story.

Gin Stokes was fired for taking other kids meds, supposidly. The nurse Teresa fell down the stairs and will most likely be out for a while.

This exact thing happened to my son.  I spoke directly to Dr. Reddick who told me she had written new prescriptions and she
stated she had delivered them directly to the "dispensary"  At least
a week went by before the new meds were given, and then my son had to tell staff what he was taking and how much to give him....and
he had substance abuse problems.  When I reported the problem
to Clay Erickson, he seemed surprised and "assured" me he would
look into it.  His assurance made me feel so much better - NOT.

It is absolutely amazing that no child has actually died from HLA's incompetence. It's probably just a matter of time.

NATSAP's Principles of Good Practice
7.0  HEALTH CARE ACCESS
7.1   The program/school will have a policy on health care that addresses the following issues:
7.1.1  Access to appropriate medical care.
7.1.2  Delineation of whom is authorized to dispense medications.
7.1.3  A policy on storing, accounting, and security of medication.

Given that Buccellato funded the creation of NATSAP and HLA is a long-standing member, shouldn't these policies have been in place all along?
Leaves one to question how many other Principles are not being followed, by HLA and other NATSAP programs.

NATSAP, buccel paid to have this group formed , and the same group that the very next year kicked him off the board?

NATSAP Hates Buccel they just abused him for his money.

It might be better put if Nicole opened up with:

This would be more accurate. Hence the only reason they are bothering to make a change. I've got to say I'm suprised, they're actually hinting at the fact that they have an unqualified untrained person on the job.

A.C's have always dispensed meds, trained or not didnt matter.

It was a close call with the girl who hung herself in the closet. I guess HLA greed trumps ethics and apparently concern for the young lives they have been entrusted with.

That girl was dead when they found her. She wasn't breathing or anything. They had to resesitate her.

Contact Lumpkin county fire department, the run logs are public record. Anytime EMS is dispatched, there is a record of the incident. There WAS an incident where a student hung herself, and EMS was dispatched, as well as lifeflight. Len does not have the ability to cover that one up.
