The marijuana gateway-drug argument is a fallacy. Of course drug addicts use marijuana first, it's the most accessible drug at a younger age. It is logical for someone who uses drugs to have used marijuana first. But to suggest that everyone who uses marijuana then proceeds to other drugs is simply a fallacy. If this argument were true I could also say that drinking soda leads to alcoholism. After all, all alcoholics I've spoken with started drinking soda first.

Commendably reiterated.

If you would have justice in this world, then begin to see that a human being is not a means to some end.  People are not commodities.  When human beings are just to one another government becomes obsolete and real freedom is born; SPIRITUAL ANARCHY.

It's interesting how the the simple insertion of the word "heartbroken" into the mothers reply invoked such intense emotional reactions and exagerations to be expressed.

The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for health commissioned a report 8 years ago into cannabis . This is the link to it on their site.

http://whqlibdoc.who.int/hq/1997/WHO_MSA_PSA_97.4.pdf

this is their latest study on the drug, it basically says that not enough research has been done on cannabis but it does have harmful effects particularly on the young and those predisposed to schizophrenia. It also says is that because people use much less of the drug than alcohol or tobacco it?s effects are less harmful than either of those drugs, but read it yourself it says some positive things about cannabis and some negative things however it does not put it on a par with heroin at all, as one of the UN?s own spokesman appears to have said. Perhaps this person should get around to reading his own organisations reports.

In the UK (in 2002) , heroin has resulted in the deaths by overdose of about 7000 people.
I read somewhere, when I was researching into cannabis, that for someone to OD on cannabis they would have to take about 1.5 pounds of it (I don?t know if this is bud or leaf) but as a result there has NEVER been a case of OD due to cannabis.

This UN spokesman should engage his brain into a forward gear before his mouth and his probable lack of common experience betrays the fact that he is stuck in reverse.

No wonder the credibility on the UN is at an all time low. What a stupid thing to say.
I have been a cannabis smoker for 20 years. I also have a responsible govt job, raise beautiful healthy children and run half-marathons and climb mountains in my spare time. I have no problem going for weeks without a smoke. Could I do this on a Class A drug?
Skin up you stupid man, you may gain some common sense!

As someone who smoked canabis in fairly large quanities over a number of years. I found that when i wanted to quit and made the decision to do so, a relapse, as it were, never was a problem. Stopping was as easy as putting down a cup of tea.

Drug use in human is hardly a new thing, just look at the cave painting in france, the paint used there was a halucigen which was appiled to the walls by spitting it through a pipe...result they got nice and high!

People say canabis is a gateway drug...yes but only because it as it is illegal and buying it puts you in contact with a dealer who can sell other things to you!

For those who say canabis is worse than alcohol...one question is you see a guy acting argessive and wanting to fight is he high on canabis or boozed up to the eyeballs??? Boozed up to the eye balls...people on canabis can't do act that way it is impossible!! Ok i make light of the situation but the point is valid.

The drug maybe more harmful to those predisposed to schizophrenia etc but so is alcohol. Perhaps the biggest problem the goverment has with canabis is that they havn't worked out how they can tax it properly yet. There is no "harmful efect" argument that can not be applied to alcohol!

What should be done is let people grow it for their own consumption and make buying it illegal. If you have no need to go to a dealer then you will not be open to buying harder drugs. Government could put a tax in the seeds and equipment used. thus making a bit of green (sorry had to use that word) for themselves.

How can you enforce a tax on something that only requires dirt, water and sunlight? That's why we have the DEA, raiding people's homes and privacy. It would be the same thing, except they'd be checking people's backyards and greenhouses. We don't need any more laws, and go ahead and cancel all laws passed in the previous fifty years while you are at it. Everyone has good ideas about how to solve problems by legislation, and the snowball effect results in nightmarish scenarios decades down the rode. It is time to accept human nature, and stop wasting resources punishing victimless crime (protecting people from themselves).

And you don't need to buy seeds because you can breed your own. Again, is a tax is levied, that means Monsanto or another such company will probably get license to start dropping mass amounts of weed specific gene killing chemicals over all the cities. Think of the profits.

The UN Executive Director of the Office of Drug Control & Crime Prevention, so-called "world drug czar" Pino Arlacchi, put together a piece in 1998 entitled "Towards a Drug-Free World by 2008
?We can Do It . . ." So then, how's that progressing? This typifies the almost unimaginable buffoonery of these "drug warriors".

When will the time come for reasoned debate and a departure from the typical denial, moralism, and hysterics that have seen countless lives ruined, billions blown over 40 years and for nothing, nothing resembling progress.

Our leaders live in a fairyland of denial because of course we all know that [some] drugs are just plain irredeemably evil & that's that & nothing more to be said about it.

So, more crackdowns? More breast-beating to satisfy constituants? It's all dismal. Dismal.

Has anyone ever read the headline "MARIJUANA-CRAZED GUNMAN ROBS BANK AND TAKES HOSTAGES!"?

I sure haven't.  Anyone who knows anyone who smokes weed knows that it makes people more docile, subdued and reflective.  There is no such thing as a "weed overdose" and nobody has ever died from using it.

All this talk about the evils of marijuana are just plain ol' uninformed nonsense.
