Son caught with cocaine in school.
« on: June 23, 2006, 04:39:00 PM »
My son was caught with cocaine in his high school. The school officer was confiscating his cellphone and a baggie of cocaine came out. Have to go to meet with administration on Monday. I am thinking about placing him away from home in a behav mod program. I am loking for one not too far from wher we live. We live in Pasadena, Florida. Any good behav mod programs not too far from there?

Unlike most of the posters here, I believe there are many good "programs".  BUT!  What you are doing is both overreacting and considering the wrong course of action.

For one, all you've identified is that he was caught with cocaine.  You've not said he was a user.  You've not said his behavior was otherwise an issue - save the poor judgment of having the cocaine at a school where they confiscate things routinely, so he also had poor judgment in having the cell phone.

Further, "behavior mod" is not the kind of program that of itself is often effective in doing anything other than instilling resentment and teaching the "student" to be more careful, and maybe drive them away from their family.

So, apart from telling him to be more careful, and perhaps requiring him to attend a course on the dangers of drug use/abuse, you've identified nothing to suggest doing anything beyond those two things.

Just beat the hell out of him and then when he has a total breakdown from the fear and pain, say you love him and you just want him to do whatever you want him to do.

Same effect, you'll just take a lot less time and save a 6 figure loan.

And no, there are no good programs that can be named, just generalized nonsense to try to globally defend them from any and all criticism, and focus deflection if you bring up specifics.

 Id love to see him name one good program.

DannyB on the internet:I CALLED A LAWYER TODAY TO SEE IF I COULD SUE YOUR ASSES FOR DOING THIS BUT THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE.

CCMGirl on program restraints: "DON\'T TAZ ME BRO!!!!!"

TheWho on program survivors: "From where I sit I see all the anit-program[sic] people doing all the complaining and crying."

A program will just drive him harder into drugs when he gets out. If he really has a problem with coke, try a week in inpatient and see how that goes.

There are a few really good programs, but they should only be considered as a last resort.  I would take some of the advice you get here at fornits first and only if those steps failed would I consider a program.  I will be curious to see how he does, Good Luck.

Hope that helps

My God man, if you KNOW of the good programs, NAME THEM for goodness sakes. Can you imagine being a desperate parent and someone giving you this 'advice'? What kind of broad stroke bullshit is this, it means nothing, helps this mother in no way, you mine as well even not have posted it.

That would suggest that the large majority of programs are BAD. So please, tell us in your opinion what are the FEW good ones since there are so many BAD out there?

Ha,Ha,  You caught on to DJ's Logic too, thats funny.  I think I said a few Really good ones, but it doesnt matter, I like the way you phrased it better.
Anyway, I think they have a ways to go before we start suggesting programs for them.  The programs today are getting more and more specialized and the root cause has not been identified or even if there is a problem to begin with.  If the child has an addiction issue you would want to take one path, if addiction is not an issue then another path may be appropriate.
The first thing is to get a counselor involved and start to get an idea of what is going on, it could be experimentation, first use etc.
But it is good that you are taking this seriously and addressing it early.  Talk to a counselor and don?t even think about programs at this point.  They are highly effective, but expensive/risky and should only be considered after you have exhausted all other avenues.

Update: My son's counselor called me tonight to let me know it wasn't cocaine they found, it was baking soda. I asked my son about this and he said that he is selling fake cocaine to support his gaming habit. Is there a program designed specifically for gamers?

You got that right, WHO: programs are expensive and RISKY. Parents do spend a ton of money, and run about a 100% RISK that their child WILL BE ABUSED. Give it a rest, WHO.

I appreciate your caution, but who's this WE at Fornits that's going to recommend a program?

***The programs today are getting more and more specialized and the root cause has not been identified or even if there is a problem to begin with.

The programs- plural- today? More and more specialized? Which ones? You really do live in la-la land don't you? If Who wishes it were so, then it must be.
