Article I came across during my data research :
??.Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5 to 14 year olds. The pressure on juniors and seniors is intense. They feel that they must succeed academically, socially and athletically. They feel that they absolutely have to get into the 'right' college. They push themselves to the limit. All you have to do is add other factors like sexuality and family issues such as divorce or finances and you have a recipe for disaster. 60 per cent of high school students recently surveyed indicated that they had thought about suicide.
Are Private Schools Immune?
Absolutely not. All the same factors come into play. And more. Children in boarding school can really feel cut off from their basic support group which is family and friends back home. ???


I think one thing that jumps out of this article is the importance that a parent have a child tested and screen by professionals before placing a child outside the home.  Placing a child that is depressed (clinically depressed) or has an underlying depressive illness like anxiety disorder, ADD or Bipolar disorder, a TBS (or any placement outside the home) may not be the best place for him or her.  Although, I think we could all agree each child?s biological make up is different which makes it difficult to list definitive warning signs for suicide that would apply to every child, removing a child from his or her environment only tends to increase the likelihood of suicide if the child is already suffering in this area.  Based on what I have read on the subject, schools should not be accepting children who are being removed from their environment without being properly screened for depression and underlying illnesses and if a specific school is doing this than the parent should view this as a ?Red Flag?

This is perhaps what's most disturbing about the industry, the fact that many programs claim to treat stuff they can't(or shouldn't) like ADD......

If a child had some indications of depression that may be another issue, along with behavior/emotional issues, some schools may be able to help with that (I am not a professional in the this area), but to take a clinically depressed child I can see as a mistake.

Based on the articles I have been reading, if the child was clinically depressed and showed signs of suicidal tendencies the therapist should/would not have recommended a TBS.  The schools should be held liable if they take a child against medical advice or the therapist liable if they recommend one and the child takes his/her own life while being placed outside the home.

Cindy you arent even close to be able to make such a call, your own daughter by your own addmission hates you. Hey.  My parents sent me to program because I'm bisexual...  School didn't give a shit.  A kid that was sent to the same school for depression and suicidal tendencies in 2002... guess what.  killed himself in program.  School didn't give a shit whether he was suicidal or not.  A girl I knew slit her wrists, so did a guy there who was there for ADHD.  Nope.  he was never suicidal before that.  In 2002, a girl (after she told the staff she was contemplating suicide...  and was dismissed as "manipulative") slit her wrists in the bathtub, passed out, and almost died... staff told her she was using it to manipulate (after she attempted suicide they told her this).  She got confronted by staff in group about it...

Point is... program doesn't give a shit what the kids are there for...  If the kid dies... oh well, they'll hold a special (read "farce") group for the family...

Kids were there for asbergers, add, anxiety, depression.... everything and everything...  none of em got helped (though, given enough time... some of em believe they were helped)

Sounds no different then HLA. I remember a kid there slitting his wrist while on restriction, as a means of helping him deal with it they sent him on an intervention. Yeah that'll help.

Not good, psy, That?s why I believe there should be proper screening done by the child?s therapist or an independent child psychologist before being able to be placed.  The school sounded irresponsible.

Well until it's required it's not going to happen.  

Also...  how would you require a psychologist's evaluation for a facility that is "techincally" not a mental health facility (ie. and "Emotional Growth" boarding school) ?

And yet...  since they advertise on NATSAP as a "program", and not a school, people still get referred to them for psychological issues.

Parents (like mine did), assume that the staff would have to be qualified in order to be counselors etc...  Sure that's required for licenced treatment centres, but not for schools.

Why don't so many of these schools just advertise as what they are, programs?  Answer that question.

Many attempts at Bmark were just for a vacation...  A lockdown mental health facility with padded walls was less stressful than day to day life in program.  The kid who killed himself, attempted suicide, was sent to the lockdown, came back, was bitched out by staff, and killed himself.  In that order.  It should be noted that Benchmark disputes that he was not "bitched out by staff"... multiple eye witnesses differ ...

He can't. In order to do so he would have to contridict himself regarding his early statements claiming regulation and oversight in the industry was not needed or warranted.
