The Elan School in rural Maine is still beating kids into shape. The tough-love
school that put manners on Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel after a
drunken-driving accident still believes in confrontation. But years of
controversy, scandal and changing sensibilities have made it a somewhat kinder,
gentler place.

When Skakel was a student in 1978, Elan's residents were routinely beaten,
berated and brainwashed into behaving.

The rich sent their emotionally disturbed and drug- and alcohol-abusing kids
there - and paid a stiff price for the privilege.

Their kids paid quite a price, too - as was revealed in the testimony of former
students at Skakel's trial for the 1975 murder of his Greenwich neighbor Martha
Moxley.

They described being forced to wear signs admitting a variety of perceived sins
or faults; being put into a boxing ring to face a series of stronger opponents
until they 'fessed up to those sins; having up to 100 classmates spit at and
verbally abuse them; being paddled; having garbage dumped on their heads.

Similar tales of torture and torment fill a number of Internet sites and are
recounted in the book "Duck in a Raincoat," by Maura Curley.

In one case, a young man describes how he and two girls were raped when they
were locked in a tiny isolation room for days with three boys after being told,
"Whatever goes on in there, goes on."

Noted Curley, "The philosophy was you were abused and you abused."

Today, while confrontation remains a key element of the school's philosophy,
professionals are making the rules and meting out punishment instead of
untrained former residents.

It's better - "but it's still not a walk in the park," Curley said.

Ben Foster, a 1980s Elan alum and now a lead singer of the punk-rock group
Screeching Weasel, paid a visit two years ago and was pleasantly surprised.

"The changes they've made are incredible," he told the Bangor Daily News.
"They're still tough, but there's more compassion than in my day."

Alum Marty Kruglick, now an Elan director, told the paper: "Basically, it's
evolution. As society has changed, so has Elan."

These days, the boxing ring is rarely used - and when it is, it's only for
bullies, said Elan lawyer Ed McCall.

General meetings are still held occasionally, he said, stressing, "There's a
function and a purpose to all of the group encounters."

Not a recent article by any means. Screeching weasel hasnt been together in years, Bens visit was quite some time ago... Marty hasnt worked there for some time either.

"Routinely beaten and brainwashed into behaving"
Fuckin hysterical.

Maura Curleys book is a farce, and sheds no light on the Elan subject. Dan Bostdorf is full of himself and promotes his wifes book as if it were written to critisize Elan.

It wasnt. It was a retaliatory exagerated tale written to get back at Joe Ricci for firing her plain and simple. Dan saught out disgruntled former residents and only one verifiable testimony made it into the book. The blurb about Elan is short, and uninformed. Dan Bostdorf is an irritating, self centered, limelight seeking turd. It was pretty disgusting to see him pat himself on the back constantly because the one man grand jury in the Skakel preliminary investigation read the book. Dan claims the book Shed light on Skakels guilt which is a quite a dilusional stretch of the imagination if not a freakin outright fictitious claim to make. The man was obviously seeking his 15 minutes on the coat tails of his wife. The book sold a whopping 4000 copies before taken out of print.

"Its better, but its still not a walk in the park"

Whatever. Maura draws this conclusion from reading the same source of info you and I do.

If you were in Elan, share your story, good or bad. But please dont damage your credibility by promoting stupid uninformed articles such as this one, which is one of many that were sold during the Skakel trial.
Elan isnt selling in the press any more. Nobody gives a shit.
They needed to attach the Kennedy name to the story to sell it.
Why?
Dirty laundry only sells when it belongs to fame and fortune, even though Skakel was just a middle class cousin, its the only thing that sold the Elan story.
The general public doesnt give a fuck what when on in Elan or any other TC without the association to fame and fortune.

Ricci, Kennedy, Ben Weasel...
Without those things, which are weak to begin with (no offense Ben) and a little spin...it wont sell.

And currently...its not.

I thought the Curly book was interesting reading and gave me a better idea of what was going on at Scarborough Downs while I was working there.

If memory serves me there was 7 or so chapters dedicated to elan .

There were a lot of incidents that were written in that book that made me think I knew who they were talking about . It was a small glimpse (snapshot ) of what elan was like when i was there.

I hope Maura Curley does a follow up. The darn thing would sell like hot cakes .

7 chapters?
I think youre confusing the topic (Ricci) with his own association with Elan.
Of course Elan gets mention in the book, Ricci owned Elan and Elan gave birth to Riccis furtunes.
But the Elan dialogue in the book was nothing more than assumptions based on anger driven blurbs from former resident(s) Namely a girl who went on to work at the Downs who was fired too.

Theres no doubt in my mind that any speak of Elan from a person who was never there is innacurate and modified to fit the agenda. Can you explain Elan to someone and expect them understand it exactly the way you do?
Sorry but Maura Curley is not nearly talented enough of a writer to give any insight to my stay at Elan.
7 Chapters wouldnt begin to scratch the surface.
And Dan the publisher is even less talented/informed yet he would love to be acknowledged as some sort of advocate...a voice for former Elan residents. Dano, stick to your caribean sunset Jimmy Buffet-esque lore. Youve not the courage to know what lies in the hearts of those who endured Elan. Hell most of us dont have the courage to dig up those bones either.

As for a cup of tea and a hotdog. Post your thoughts of my identity and back up your words by posting your own, or fuck the hell off...troll.
If you didnt spend 27 months in Elan with me, you know absolutely nothing about me.
But continue your anon game, and pretend someone else is playing along... You are very simple to dismiss.

Maybe some one could ask Dan Bostdorf to post the first 7 chapters of his book here for all to see.Afterall its out of print anyway whats he got to lose.

And why do adults need moderators. In the real world aren't adults able to moderate themselves.
Does this site really truly need a babysitter.

As for attacking someone because they go to AA is really low. You are atacking a person for bettering themselves not onl;y is it low it just does not make sense. You can't fault a person for trying to better themselves in any endeavor that they try.

Just my moderator's 2 cents worth

Matt
Do any of these grotesque postings resemble any adult behavior you have encountered? These children are damaged beyond anything I have seen.If you cant see the end result on the horizon, you are delusional as your statement portrays.
You took the job.....
I used to think you took it seriously. We used to trade emails, and exchange comments on this board until you disapeared for 9 mos.During which time, its been open season on Art.I have plenty of self esteem, they cant hurt my feelings or make me feel anything different.I know that average, working people dont think like these clowns, much less write this kinda warped shit. I woulda thought YOU of all people would do something different.Someone who truly knows what being persecuted is all about. We went to the same Elan.. I guess when it all comes down to it.. Some people only talk the talk.Closing Elan will not be the thoughts or the end result of anything posted here.People just look at us with disgust and see no credibility in any of us.You have allowed the ass clowns to destroy what it is you thought would be good.Just about the only thing I ever quit in my life is drinking, fornits will not be next.. I could care less what is written.
It all comes out in the wash... this fall I am doing some much needed laundry.Till then.... Its gonna be an awsome summer
