Then I went walking in a cemetery that i hadn't walked in yet.. It's up and sorta over a hill immediately to the north of here. Why I'd never bothered to walk up there before is beyond me but I never had since I've been here. The coolest tombstones of the lot by far were these really old ones with death dates ranging from the year 1800 to the late 1800's. Each one of them had a hand with pointed index finger sculpted on the front; each hand points directly at the sky...it was pretty cool seeing several of them side by side like that. I walked down a little further and...there was a newer headstone and the deceased's last name was -get this- "NEWCOMER"
I walked back toward the ridge to see if the sun was setting yet..It was starting to.. Then I heard some music that I knew could only be live music coming from the house up the road to the south...so out of curiosity I moved toward it so as to hear it better. On the way up there I kinda wondered for a minute if it was only a recording being played really loud.. But no, it was definitely live! I walked the way up there and stood out near the road in front of the lone house where it was no doubt coming from. The band wasn't visible from the road, but I could hear them a lot better as I stood outside and listened to them play for a minute. They were in a sort of garage-like building that stood separately back from the house. They were playing a gutty and rather raunched version of the popular old blues song, "Hoochie-Coochie Man" that was pretty damned good as blues goes. Good guitar playing too... As I walked away they started into another song that wasn't bluesy at all that sounded pretty good too. I stood and listened to that one while I took in the sunset..beautiful with a few little clouds turning pinks and purple over the appalachians. You can see for like 15 miles from up there in the other cemetery that I usually go to..
