Girl's stepfather faces sex abuse charges

May 11, 2006 (ELGIN, Ill.) - A pastor accused of spanking a 13-year-old girl who said she had been sexually abused by her stepfather has been charged with battery. Darryl Bujack is accused of using a piece of wood to spank the girl on several occasions as punishment for what he believed to be a lie.
Bujack is pastor at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Elgin. He is out on bond. The stepfather accused of sexually abusing the girl is also out on bond.
The 13girl's mother is in the process of filing for divorce from the stepfather. She said, for too long, those two men influenced how she handled her daughter's claims of sexual abuse.
"I thought, well, something must be wrong. Why would she be saying this? OK, if you say this is right -- it's my husband, the pastor, two men, authorities in my life. At that point, sure, OK. We'll do that," said the girl's mother.
This mother says that if she could do things differently, she would have listened to her daughter the first time the girl said she was abused by her stepfather. Instead, the girl was taken to their pastor, Darryl Bujack.
Bujack turned himself in to police Wednesday night, a night when he normally holds service at First Missionary Church. He is charged with battery, because police say for three months last year, before those Wednesday night services, Bujack routinely spanked the girl as punishment for her claims that she was sexually abused by her stepfather.
"He then proceeded to spank her with a 3-foot-by-2-inch-long piece of wood trim," said Lt. Mike Turner, Elgin Police.
It was March of last year when the girl, her mother and stepfather went to the pastor after the girl made the allegations against the stepfather. That's when the spankings started and continued until May when sometime afterward, the mother and daughter reported the spankings to DCFS.
During the investigation, DCFS notified the police about Bujack and Richmond police about the stepfather, who is charged with five counts of predatory sexual abuse.
"There was enough information obtained through the investigation that we were able to get an arrest warrant from the Kane County state's attorney's office," said Turner.
The 13-year-old girl has been going to counseling for several months and the mother is also in counseling.
Bujack appears again in court next month.
