I agree..I wouldn't have a problem knowing that he had beat that bitch to death if he had been able to do it. He would have been entirely justified.

Self defense.....think about it.

I keep running across postings from other Atlanta suvivors that were here before me but have not seen any here for a while. I'm starting to wonder where they are. Am I the only one lurking here???? Send me a PM if you don't want to post.

What year or years were you there??? And who was the executive staff when you were there??? I trying to remember who took over after Dennis Buttimer left.

What was done with the seed saved from the India Hemp last summer? It ought, all of it, to have been sewn again; that not only a stock of seed sufficient for my own purposes might have been raised, but to have disseminated the seed to others; as it is more valuable than the common Hemp.

After reading the original posting on the first page that Tom had wrote and conversing with another survivor from this time frame some of the stuff I've blocked out came back to me. I remembered a group of us misbehaving being taken into the restroom and physically abused, however I forgot about being punched in the stomach then Jeff Ambrose having his head forced into the toilet....and he probably wasn't the only one. Looking back now I'm angry and I want vengence.Laws are like spider webs. If some poor weak creature comes up against them - it is caught. But the bigger one can break through and get away.

I am trying to figure out the exact dates, I was transfered to Straight-Atlanta in August 1981 (according to things I read about when that concentration camp opened) and escaped shortly there after. Finally reaching phase 3 after 10 months. I was in St Pete in what had to be late 1980. I was in a total 10 months, 3 weeks, 5 days and about 6 hours. When I escaped I called my parents from a payphone after vanishing for 3 weeks and was ready to go underground forever if they didnt call off the dogs. I was 17 then and now I am 42. It was a pretty evil place. I remember seeing a guy jump through a small Florida crank style window to get to freedom. I saw a guy heave a livingroom chair through a sliding glass door. (Fellow Newcommer). I had been denied being able to use the restroom during a rap and ended up pissing myself and having to sit in piss for several hours till lunch break and even then, I didnt get freash clothes. I had been "restrained" many times. This as you know means 4-6 people wrestle you to the ground and sit on your chest, legs and arms and head. I was made to eat peanut butter sandwitches and water at the table while the oldcommer family had steaks, spagetti and other more tasty meals. That was a two week sentance of bread, peanut butter and water.. For trying to "split" /escape.. Each of my split attempts was followed a decent beating followed by some deprivation ie: food, sleap etc and of course a restart LOL, I was on phase 1 for 9 months and restarted 3-4 times.. I had an ingrown toenail during my stay and it took an act of congress to get to go to a doctor and then I was not allowed even as much as an asprin for fear I might get high.. If I were to see any of those old men (who must be at least 50-60 now) who ran that place I think I would just kick their ass. God, that was a long time ago... memories still pretty vivid. If you were among the 1st group of folks to go to Straight-Atlanta from St Pete, it would be good to hear.

I remember a newcomer that was transferred from St. Pete and was seated beside me on his first day.

I thought we already had some misbehavers, however this guy was a new breed in our group. He was a "Cutter". I was shocked at what I had saw. He had on long sleeves and looked directly at me and said "FLASH" and proceeded to show me his arms where he had cut himself from his wrist to his elbows.

But what really took the cake is when he stole a knife from his host home and brought it in on open meeting night.

When Mr. Buttimer opened the meeting the guy jump up, screamed "Coming Home" and charged Mr Buttimer with the knife.

I would say that he had enough abuse.

Looks like you were in after I escaped. I wasnt into any self mutalation. The story doesnt suprise me in the least. It is, or was, as much a test of mental strength as anything I have ever encountered even to this day. The "being stood up" in a rap session and being "confronted" time and time again with the repeating of the phase "get honest" among the insults etc.. combined with all the deprivation / humiliation tactics. I saw a kid get hauled off to a mental institution while I was in St Pete and I saw another kid get taken to jail / juvie.

Today, I dont fear any confrontation. I dont get humiliated easily at all. Occasionally I will tell someone who hasnt been about my expeariences and they look at me in disbeleaf. Only those who have been in the system know the deal. I dont much speak of my time in anymore because of the looks of disbeleaf so I am glad this sight is here.

What was with the whole "getting motivated" thing? It seems totally rediculas to me. What was the point of that anyway? Exersise? Can you really tell who wants to speak the most by how fast someone is flailing their arms and head about? lol. I can still "snap" my fingers by slamming my first finger into my middle finger, a trick that only people in Straight know how to do... Too funny. Anyway, again I was with the first batch of kids who came from St Pete to Atlanta..
