Samantha's statement
« on: March 23, 2006, 02:39:00 AM »
I hope you don't take this wrong way, and I DO NOT mean any disrespect by it - I have a question or a curiousity I am wanting to know about.

Samantha says she was isolated for several weeks or months and made to wear humble pants that she was basically forced to wear her own feces, urine, and discharges. She said that she picked at her scabs and nails all the time, that she ate them in order to keep from being hungry.

I am curious since Straight was only an outpatient treatment facility if noone ever did anything about all of the feces and urine and bloody mess that she carried around with her to the host homes that took her in at night.

I'm not saying it doesn't add up, but I am questioning how fucked up any host parent would have to be to allow a girl who's humble pants are full of turds, wet urine and stench, and blood everywhere into their home. She claims that she was starved but how can this happen. The most we ever got was the pb n j diet. Most host parents consisted of a mother, I do not know any father who would have been a single parent that EVER put their child into Straight without the mother around, EVER. So, since most or more likely ALL host homes consisted of a nearby mother and/or father - it would seem to me at some point that a host mother would not be so cold if she saw a girl starving for 'months'. I could be wrong on all accounts. Let's say many father's did put their kids in Straight, I still don't know any adult who wouldn't at least offer an emaciated child a piece of bread if their face is sunken and their scabs are bleeding like that. Sincerely.

The other question I had is about Sammie's forced abortion. She claims that she was raped by a staff member who was employed by Straight. She claims that she got pregnant as a result of that rape and that she was made, by HRS and Straight to have an abortion. Now, drugs were not allowed at Straight. Was she given meds such as antibiotics which are VERY enforced law when it comes to things like legal abortions in state sanctioned clinics from HRS? If she was taking antibiotics but being starved and made to use the restroom in her pants all day every time she had to go/ wouldn't this upset the use of the antibiotics in general and wouldn't the staff at the abortion clinic or hospital have recognized that her humble pants didn't look so good?

I understand that all of this did not happen at once and that the time frames for the different crimes did not happen all at once and that what did happen to everyone at Straight is bullshit. But I wanted to gain some clarity on those issues and I hope you can see your way past bashing me into a hole for the questions I am being sincere about. I know this is a sensitive topic and I apologize for it. I am not really curious, but I found those questions to be pressing about the details of the statement of her victimization at Straight Inc.

Why don't you worry about your own experiences? What difference does it make if perceived discrepancies run through one survivor's account? Does it take anything away from the abuse Straight heaped on thousands of people for over a decade?

Anon, if you compare what Sammie actually says herself to how the media quotes her, it's just like every other story. They never seem to get it 100% right, either in factual detail or in the way they frame the story.

I remember the humble pants. If someone had a small accident, they might not be allowed to clean up for some hours. If they were held in an intake room overnight as it sometimes happened, there was no foster parent of either gender to come to their aid. If no big mess happened for however many days, then no clothes change and no laundry service.

Sammie was not the only girl in that place to have to bleed through her clothing for a good many hours or more before getting permission to go to the bathroom and some ill-fitting, ugly assed clothes from the clothes room. No one ever stood before group and explicitly ordered these things. It's just that a misbehaving newcomer couldn't even get permission to speak in order to tell someone they needed clean undies.

Like many other kids in group, she shit herself because she couldn't get permission to use the restroom. Like many other kids in group, it was some hours and probably your typical come down rap about self respect before she was able to get clean clothing. Like lots of other kid give various other creative little mindfuck punishments, the humble pants thing probably went on for weeks, likely w/ a couple of changes of clothes some hours after any accident.

I never heard Sammie describe these things in any way inconsistent with what I remember specifically or with the way they did things in Straight, Sarasota generally. But, for some damned reason, you say "shit my pants" and "month" in the same conversation w/ any newsman and they come away with a mental picture of, litterally, a months worth of accumulated shit and piss. And that's what they relay.

But that's what we've got to work with.

Do you like the way they cut and edited that short interview w/ John Alexander? I'm sure their intentions were good, but editors must edit somehow and, always, their lack of understanding as well as their preconceived notions always come through in that process.

That's why it takes a thousand voices to tell just one story.

just trying to understand, sorry if I offended. By the time I'd gotten into Straight - HRS had already come down on Straight so all the bullshit was probably alot less than in the 70s and early eightees, but we still got our fair share of humble pants and other abuses if we misbehaved or did not comply with the strict rules, hell - if we made a wrong look it meant confrontation at the least.

I was really curious about the severity of days and years prior to my time at Straight and that is why I apologized for any misconceived notions that might come across my questions. I had recently posted my concerns about the earlier protest in which Sammie replied, and I must say I have to agree that with all the editing and working of the media, Sammie's story - and it wasn't that she didn't come off legitimate - sounded different than other stories I'd heard. I like what you said about 'a thousand voices to tell a story', that is true.

Well thanks. That 'thousand voices' thing is an old native American saying I picked up somewhere.

I don't really buy that the Program ever got any better just because the regulators ran through it like the flu once in awhile. I've heard from people who started out the Cinci program that they all were glad to be away from headquarters and Virgil and that, for a time, it was just much less intense over there. But talk to people who have been there over the past 10 years or so and under the KHK name and it seems that, as soon as the pressure is off, it all goes right back to the same nightmare.

Seems as if there's a threshold bottom of intensity and extremism that, if they cross that, they fall apart due to attrition and reduced recruiting. And there seem to be certain personalities that bring their own flair and aptitude into the mix. Virgil is one of those. And, for some reason, people keep coming around saying they'd like to find out where George Ross landed up, but no one's giving any hard detail about exactly why him, of all people.

I sure would like to know. As far as I know, every damned location in every time frame told the same tall tale about how damned lucky we all were that we weren't in this one or that one. It was both a guilt trip and a threat. And how can anyone ever make any kind of objective comparison?

If you look at the written rules and other details about SAFE, one might conclude that those turkeys don't know what they're talking about comparing SAFE today w/ Straight in the 80's. But look at the kids in the video; the fluorescent tans, dull hair pulled back too tightly, manic vacant faces... hell, even their walk, posture and personal gestures gave away the story. I don't think you could train actors to carry off the overall effect, even if you wanted to.

Ya know? So I sure would like to find out more detail about what went on in the other locations and over the years.

In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn?t speak up because I wasn?t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn?t speak up because I wasn?t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn?t speak up because I wasn?t a trade unionist. Then they came for Catholics, and I didn?t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Hmmm, I made it through a similar program for a whole year and a half without EVER "messing" my pants.  How could that be?  Oh, maybe because I didn't act like a complete fool and idiot misbehaving, screaming, kicking, cursing etc. there.  I wasn't the mental case that Sammie was and still seems to be.

Anyone know the defination of exaggeration?  We should ask Sammie.  :cry2:

Being an easy sell out isn't really anything to brag about. I'll cop to it. I never messed myself and only got sat on once. Never did let them make me act like an animal, either. I complied because it made the most sense for the moment. Never was proud of it, though.

My brother was the real dickhead around Straight. He never was a real big guy but he didn't take shit from anyone. I am more of a peaceful protestor. I pulled shit from within so that I never had to get sat on, much, or hurt as much as others did. But, it just didn't work that way. I still got hurt. So even though I, and others, weren't receiving much education at all I started adding things up and using the loopholes in the program; my small way of getting even. My tenure practically broke my parents, and they still complain about it to this day. It's funny in some ways still today, too. I let more than fifteen people leave my home and travelling car (all times planned at red lights so the newcomer would not have to hop out from a moving vehicle), at least three of which merely asked me if they could walk knowing I would allow them to leave at will. This was in a time when letting cop outs leave and not getting really physical with them meant you got setback or fucked up yourself. Being the pussy I am caused me not to get hurt, at least not as much as others. Big eyes, a questioning and innocent speech. Works sometimes today, too.

And obviously 4th and 5th phases were for pulling shit. So that's what we all did. Mac'd on a hottie oldcomer chica once or twice and then she graduated. Did what I wanted for the most part and lived stupidly without much education. In fact, at one point my parents pulled me. I was so fucked up that they put me back in because I was depressed. Luckily, I had been out for about two weeks. So, when I was going to come back in I called the in-house teacher and told her that when I left I lost all my work or that my parents threw it all away with other stuff. Not true. While I was in the Straight school system, I never really did any work since I couldn't pay attention; all the pages always went blank and I was either always frustrated or I was tired and wanted to sleep as usual from the shit going on in group, or I could not focus right on the work given to me. I forget her name. Fat, ugly, and mean to us druggy schoolsters. But she gave me a 'B+' on all my work for two years worth of school work that never existed aside from some of the doodling I did sometimes. I managed to save those.

How much did they have to shell out to straight per month? Do you have the figures? In my case there was an initial fee plus "room & board" every month.
