You can find news articles re the death of Martin Lee Anderson, the 14-year old boy who was beaten by guards who should have been protecting him.

People need to understand that this is not something that happens only in boot camps. Though it is very promising to read that action will be taken as a result of this boy's death, and that the investigation is not over yet as they plan to exhume the boy's body and perform a 2nd autopsy, it is disturbing to think of the millions of people who have no clue that children are being abused, neglected, and who are dying in residential treatment programs, behavior modification programs, residential "boarding schools", and wilderness programs. http://www.caica.org/NEWS%20Deaths%20Main.htm

Edit to last post:

Martin Lee Anderson died at the hands of those who should have been protecting and helping him. It appears, after watching the video and reading the articles, that Martin died at the hands of a half dozen grown men at least twice his size who beat him until his limp body collapsed, all while a nurse stood by and watched as he was beaten.

He didn't put up a fight. He wasn't beligerent. He wasn't an out-of-control, dangerous teen as so many teens are portrayed these days.

This happened the day after he had been placed in a boot camp for troubled kids. Why was he sent there? Because he took his grandmother's car for a ride without permission.

And now they want to try to blame it on sickle cell? It is my understanding that "you take your victim as you find him." Another words, if you rear-end a woman who has just had brain surgery and kill her, you will not get a lesser sentence because she had a pre-existing condition. No, you have to take her as you find her. So, even if Martin did have the sickle cell trait, he was alive and well before he was beaten to death. Martin did not deserve to die.

You can read about his death, watch the video, and follow the story by clicking on the link below:

It is my hope that his death will not be in vain. It is my hope that somehow people will be educated that this is not an isolated incident and that children are being abused, neglected, and are dying in other programs such as behavior modification programs, residential treatment programs, residential "boarding" schools, and wilderness programs. Maia Szalavitz has been investigating and reporting on this story too:

Boot Camp Death Connections (15 comments )

2006, Investigations, George W. Bush

When fourteen-year-old Martin Anderson died after being beaten by guards in a Florida boot camp in January, it seemed as though the media would portray it as just another "isolated incident," another case where tough love was taken "too far" by over-zealous staff.

But the coverage this time has been different: unlike accounts of prior deaths, most reports have cited the research showing that boot camps do not work and the press has begun to link their political connections to their continued existence.

And here's where things get extra strange. The man who founded the Bay County Boot Camp where the boy died, Guy Tunnell, is now Commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. His agency has been charged with investigating the death.

According to the Miami Herald, Tunnell hired "most" of the staff involved in the beating of Anderson after he founded the program. He claimed, nonetheless, of course, that his investigation would be "fair and impartial."

Even more curiously, the autopsy on the boy--which found that the boy died from sickle cell trait, not as a result of the beating--was not done at the hospital where he died, as would usually be the case. Anderson died in Escambia County--but according to the Herald, Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen specifically requested that the post-mortem be performed in Bay County.
