Oy!! Nice choice!!  And for Dolphy fans, a very special song:
    "So Long Eric", conceived as a temporary goodbye letter for the woodwind player, who had decided to stay in Europe indefinitely after the band's upcoming tour there, would unexpectedly acquire the air of a sad tribute only months later, when Dolphy lapsed into a sudden diabetic coma in Berlin and passed away at the age of 36. The impact of the loss of Dolphy so early is incalculable--he was a truly original voice on any instrument he touched and cut precious few sessions as a leader.[/list]

    Recently released (2007), of previously unreleased live material from 1964:
      The sextet was fairly heavily documented in its day on the stage-- The Great Concert of Charles Mingus, recorded in Paris in April of 1964 and finally reissued in 2004 with the full set list, features this band minus trumpeter Johnny Coles, who was incapacitated at the time with a stomach ailment, and it's one of his strongest recordings. Going back in time a few months from that Paris date, the sextet (Dolphy gets billing on this disc mostly because he was too amazing not to) was coming off a residency at the Five Spot where they honed their interaction and discovered each other's tendencies. They played a one-off show at Cornell, which was lost to the ages until Mingus' widow Sue found a tape.

      As a document of the sextet, it's arguably even better than the       Great Concert. Unfortunately, there's no mind-blowing version of the latter's "Parkeriana" in this set, but it makes up for that loss elsewhere. For something that was apparently never considered for release, this has pristine recording quality, and it includes all of both sets, nearly filling two CDs with just ten different songs. This set captures the band in an expansive mood, exploring the possibilities of Mingus' ingenious compositions (and a few old favorites as well), and for any fan of 60s jazz, it's a wonder to behold.[/list]

      British blues-rockers Back Door Slam boast a tough, streetwise sound that recalls veteran U.K. blues players such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and John Mayall, though these young guitar slingers represent a new generation -- when bassist Adam Jones joined the group in 2006, guitarist and singer Davy Knowles and drummer Ross Doyle were all of 20 years old, while Jones himself was just 19. The members of Back Door Slam grew up in the tiny seaside community of the Isle of Man, and Knowles decided he wanted to be a guitar player at the age of 11, when he heard "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits on the radio while riding in the car with his father. After borrowing his father's acoustic guitar, Knowles began teaching himself to play and digging into his dad's old records, which led him to discover the sounds of the golden age of British blues, while later he began embracing the music's American roots (the name comes from a song by latter-day blues guitarist Robert Cray). After mastering the rudiments of live performing with a handful of local bands, Knowles joined forces with Ross Doyle, bassist Jamie Armstrong, and rhythm guitarist Brian Garvey to form Back Door Slam in 2003. After Garvey died in an auto accident in 2004, the band stripped itself down to a power trio and began earning a potent reputation playing clubs and festivals as well as opening for acts ranging from Don McLean to the Who. In 2006, Jamie Armstrong left the band and Jones arrived to solidify Back Door Slam's lineup. In 2007, Back Door Slam recorded their debut album, Roll Away, and headed to the United States for a concert tour that included appearances at the Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits music festivals

      The Rolling Stones--Let It Bleed   (the lines from the title track, "and there will always be a place/in my parking lot/when you need a little coke and sympathy".... has taken on a significant meaning in my life as of late.  She's cool like that, yes she is.   

      Iron Maiden--Killers and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.......on cassette, no less......burned 5through this one twice today while waiting on some shit to go down.

      Some cheesy pop song that has a whistled intro verse and lyrics pertaining to a guy with some sort of shady past getting together with a girl who is OK with it...."if you knew my whole life note for note/if you knew my secret history/would you go home with somebody like me?"  or something like that.    If any of you know the name of the song or artist, let me know, will ya? The female vocalist sounds a lot like Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star.  Speaking of Mazzy Star, I recently listened to ....So Tonight That I Might See.... and She Hangs Brightly.   Ladies choice, y'know.   I always liked Mazzy Star, and one of David Roback's previous bands, Opal, that sounds a lot like Mazzy Star, but with a harder rocking side, too.  Check out Happy Nightmare, Baby sometime, or the song "Northern Line", which was covered by The Old 97s, probably 'cause of the lyric, seductively sung by Kendra Smith, "I'm singing of the wreck/Of the old 97".

      Jane's Addiction--Nothing's Shocking and their live debut on XXX Records.  Damn fine rock and roll, as is Appetite For Destruction by Guns and Roses, which has also been a recent listen.

      Things have been frantic and weird, as usual, over here in RTPland, but as fucked as things have been, some really cool things have happened to me recently, most significantly being meeting a real cool woman that I've been hanging with for the last couple of weeks.  She's a real sweetheart,  and she turned what could have been a very fucked up time for me into a really wonderful time.   We seem to go together like, well, like morphine and cocaine.....or something like that.
