Produced in association with the Tourette Syndrome Association, I Have Tourette's But Tourette's Doesn't Have Me is an insightful new family documentary that takes a candid look at the lives of several American children growing up with Tourette Syndrome. In every school in this country, it's likely that at least one child has Tourette's, a neurological condition characterized by repetitive, involuntary vocal and motor tics that persist over time. Many parents and educators don't recognize the symptoms, and often the disorder goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. In this 30-minute documentary, over a dozen children ages 6-13 are interviewed about what it is like to grow up with Tourette Syndrome, what measures they are taking to control it, and the challenges they face in their efforts to be accepted into the social mainstream as a "normal" kid.

The Tourette Syndrome Association
Founded in 1972 in Bayside, New York, TSA is a major national health-related organization with 35 U. S. Chapters, 300 support groups, and International Contacts around the world. Their mission is to identify the cause of, find the cure for and control the effects of Tourette Syndrome. TSA offers resources and referrals to help people and their families cope with the problems that occur with TS, raise public awareness, and counter media stereotypes about TS. TSA also provides essential TS information to educators and families to optimize teaching and learning, and tries to end stigma and promote acceptance regarding TS in school settings.

There is also a great documentary from the 90s, called "Twitch and Shout" that I thought was awesome. It followed the lives of several people living with tourrettes, and also visited a tourrettes convention. One memory that stood out for me from the documentary was this cute punked out girl with pink hair at the convention who was wearing this shirt which said "It's bitchin' to be twitchin'"

I found it, but it hasn't been converted to
DVD so it is off the Netflix radar, for now.

Apparently it had a PBS POV showing.

Here are some great reviews, but the
prices are steep:

Actually, uncontrollable swearing is just one of the many ways tourrettes can manifest itself. One person I knew made kind of a barking seal sound with their mouth closed, like they were taking in air and contracting their esophagous. (I used to think they were laughing at my jokes until I realized it was simply that their tourrettes was acting up.) Someone else I knew simply sniffed their nose a lot. I didn't even realize they had tourrettes until someone told me.
