               SCIENCE DESK | July 20, 2004, Tuesday

People who do not want to wait for old age to shrink their brains and bring on memory loss now have a quicker alternative - abuse methamphetamine for a decade or so and watch the brain cells vanish into the night.   The first high-resolution M.R.I. study of methamphetamine addicts shows "a forest fire of brain damage," said Dr. Paul Thompson, an expert on brain mapping at the University of California, Los Angeles. "We expected some brain changes but didn't expect so much tissue to be destroyed."   The image, published in the June 30 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience, shows the brain's surface and deeper limbic system. Red areas show the greatest tissue loss.   The limbic region, involved in drug craving, reward, mood and emotion, lost 11 percent of its tissue. "The cells are dead and gone," Dr. Thompson said. Addicts were depressed, anxious and unable to concentrate.   The brain's center for making new memories, the hippocampus, lost 8 percent of its tissue, comparable to the brain deficits in early Alzheimer's. The methamphetamine addicts fared significantly worse on memory tests than healthy people the same age.   The study examined 22 people in their 30's who had used methamphetamine for 10 years, mostly by smoking it, and 21 controls matched for age. On average, the addicts used an average of four grams a week and said they had been high on 19 of the 30 days before the study began.   Methamphetamine is an addictive stimulant made in clandestine laboratories nationwide. When taken by mouth, snorted, injected or smoked, it produces intense pleasure by releasing the brain's reward chemical, dopamine. With chronic use, the brains that overstimulate dopamine and another brain chemical, serotonin, are permanently compromised.   The study held one other surprise, Dr. Thompson said: white matter, composed of nerve fibers that connect different areas, was severely inflamed, making the addicts' brains 10 percent larger than normal. "This was shocking," he said. But there was one piece of good news: the white matter was not dead. With abstinence, it might recover.

It's true.  I don't think you come back from years of burning on that shit.  I've seen speed freaks that looked really old, but never met any who actually were.  That shit corrodes your brain about as much as long-term, hardcore alcohol abuse.  Smoke pot, have a couple of beers, hell, even the occasional (unless, of course, your idea of an "occasion" is, say, lunch) line of coke or pinch of smack up your nose ain't gonna kill ya, or fuck you up too bad, and if you were doing pure methamphetamine four or five days a year, it probably wouldn't be that big a deal, either.  I don't know and have never met anyone who enjoys doing crystal meth recreationally without abusing it to some extent.  I'm not saying it can't be done, just that I've never seen it.  The fry from meth is fucking hardcore, I've met plenty of people with burnt pool chemicals where their brain cells used to be.

Yeah i agree. I've done it maybe 3 times, but each time was so extreme it sucked beyond words. besides the fact you want to do it for 3-4 days straight.. the comedown kills. at least with coke the experience is only a short while. meth is some gnarly shit... if our governemnt is going to spend billions of dollars on a war on drugs they should start getting meth users in treatment or something. what a horrible way to live

A basic premise in America is that faster is better. From instant tea to TV dinners, Pentium IV processors to G4 Power Macs, if there's a way to do something faster, we'll figure out how to do it, and not miss a beat -- or a coffee break -- in the bargain.

That's a big reason why stimulant drugs hold so much fascination for us all.

You are right, it's none of my business if you want to do too much meth, but don't try to elicit sympathy after you've burned out your brain from using it. Your speedfreak sob story about being depressed, anxious, and unable to think clearly will be none of my business, either. And don't try any psycho shit after you've been tweaking on it for a week or so--I live in FL and the law says I can shoot your tweaker ass if I feel threatened by you, and with a bunch of meth showing up in your system during the autopsy, no jury in the state will convict me.

That there is good perspective.

Good perspective?

Huh, that there is pure hostility and the absence of any human compasion.

People with this attitude will keep fighting the winless war on drugs with anger and prejudice rather than reason and resolve.

If you really have an issue with drug abuse, get off your lazy angry ass and bitch about the tax dollars that are taken from your paycheck every week to SUPPORT the multi-billion dollar goverment industry of illegal drugs.

Our goverment has a vested interest in the domestic drug trade. The criminal justice system is a revolving door for addicts who are locked up for short periods of time and never given any sort of valid medical treatment for a valid medical condition known as addiction. The national average to house an inmate in any of this nations jails and prisons is $135 a day. Thats YOUR MONEY to give an addict a place to eat, sleep, shit, and learn from the pros how not to get caught next time.

This fucking drug war is a farce, and people like you continue to expect you can make a difference in it by fabricating some stupid self-serving scenario with a solution to kill an addict if you feel threatened.

Its our fucking elected officials you should feel threatened by, not some fictious drug addict you dont have time for other than to put a bullet in his head if your righteous ass feels a bit intimidated.

I think youre more intimidated by what you dont know, than what you think you do.

Go shoot someone and make the world a better place....maybe put the first bullet in your own thick head.

Hrmm. I read it as an individual quite unconcerned with whether or not the government was dealing with the meth problemo. Instead, they agree with the meth user that meth use is nobody's business, and only ask in return that the meth user please not come crying to them, etc., as they are not interested in playing the parent figure, and kindly remind the meth user to refrain from stepping on their property and trying "any psycho shit". An all-around good perspective.
