Has anyone written a book about their experience?
« on: September 08, 2005, 01:21:00 AM »
I was wondering, if someone has taken the time to write out their experience in detail. I would be very interested in reading a detailed story, whether it be a first person tale of what it's like or fiction based upon the program experience. With thousands, tens of thousands of us out there I'm sure it would be well received. I have kept all my notes so by the time my writing skills are better I will still retain the knowledge. I think our story needs to be told.

Maybe someone has made a documentary?

Or is it just websites for now?

Maia Szalavitz is the author of the soon-to-be-published-book  "Help at Any Cost: How the Troubled-Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids", Riverhead, February 2006

Google Maia Szalavitz ... she has published some great essays, articles and books.

This book will be a best-seller and open the floodgates especially when she starts making the talk show rounds to promote her book and the ugly truth about the teen help industry.

I found Alexia Parks' book listed on amazon. You can preview the first several pages. It appears well writen, engaging and I am ordering it tonight. I'll be sure to report back once I am finished. This is exactly what I was looking for. I hope more books surface with time.

American Gulag focuses on a faith-based school the author's niece was sent to.  I believe there was a murder there.  It's a good book, Ms. Parks is a good writer.

The book coming out by Maia was well-researched and carefully documented and should be very powerful.  She is an excellent writer and was on the Montel Williams show with the Straight/WWASPS survivors.

I've read An American GULAG and I would recommend it.

It is a heartfelt essay on the pain and frustration of having a teen you care about, disappear into the private Program void; as well as an informative piece of work on the nature of the industry in general.

I just put in an order - and one for Miai's book too. You can pre-order both books. Jesus Land should be out later this month, but Miai's is not due for release until Feb.

I am looking forward to her book.  She interviewed my family in depth about The Hyde Schools!

Hyde is considered one of the milder schools, but believe me they do just as much psychological damage as these other wilderness camps, etc.  They could be considered even more dangerous as they advertise being a "Character Based School" which can fool the public!
