Graduating from Whitmore

Questions for anyone that knows:

1. Is Whitmore accredited?  If so, by whom and when?

2. Of their alumni, what are the names of the colleges they have been accepted into (e.g. 4 year, 2 year community, tech or trade school).

3. Does the school provide SAT, ACT preparation and testing?

4. Does the school accept students who have been expelled or suspended from their own school?

5. Does the school accept students who have come into contact with the juvenile justice system or are on probation?

Here is a link to the daily schedule at Whitmore from 5:30 am to 10:30 am.

Thank you in advance.

To your first question, no. The parents were told it was and so were the students. It may have been accredited recently but it certainly wasn't when I was there less than a year ago.
I can't really help you with you second question, I've lost touch w/ most of the alumni. Out of the ones I've spoken to most are going to community college, one is finishing high school, and the others are just working.
Third question, NO. There is hardly anything being taught in the academic sense. I was completely unprepared for any kind of testing or to be put back in school when I got out.
Fourth Question, yes. I'd been kicked out of my high school. Plenty of the others had as well, or had been suspended.
Fifth question, yes yes yes yes. Plenty of kids there had had run-ins with the law before going there. Two claimed to have committed murder. To the best of my recollection, there was no one on probation when I was there.
Hope this helped.

What are the stories behind most of these kids.  Why are they there?  Where are they from?  Are they from wealthy families?  Do most have drug addictions?

The majority of the kids there had some sort of substance abuse problem, drugs, alcohol, food, you name it. There were a few kids from wealthy families. Unfortunately, a lot of the kids parents were actually having a very difficult time paying for their stay there. Hence the total frustration with the breach of contract by the Sudweeks. A lot of the kids had been adopted, others had histories of abuse...of course it wouldn't be right to get into specifics. They had all kinds of different stories. They were from all over, I'm from Washington, we had kids from Jersey, New York, Texas, Mexico, Ohio, Loiusiana, Florida...everywhere.

It sounds like these kids are just dumped  at Whitmore, and the parents haven't done any research.  It seems like the parents don't want to deal with their children.  Is any government funding paying for some of these kids to be at Whitmore?[ This Message was edited by: 007burd on 2005-06-15 15:40 ]

Seems to me this program doesn't do much advertising, how did all these parents find out about it?  The Internet?

I recently asked the State of Utah school government about the status of Whitmore's accreditation - here is the information they sent back to me earlier this month.

-----------

Subject: RE: Accreditation Information

Whitmore Academy's educational program is provisionally accredited by the state of Utah and the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools.  They have 3 years of provisional status until they complete all the requirements for full accreditation.  They have licensed administrators and core subject teachers are all licensed and endorsed for the subjects they are teaching.  Their courses meet Utah State Core Curriculum standards and objectives.  As an accredited institutions their high school credits would be accepted by any other accredited school or college.

We only accredit the educational program.  You will have to check with the local agencies to see if they meet code for facilities of this type.

MOST are paid for privately.
A couple seem to be paid for by other funds--don't know how that works tho....since they are on parole.  Wonder who does pay for them.

Isn't NW the same organization that accredits all the WWASP schools along with several schools of fish?

I'm pretty sure they rely entirely on edcons. I also supect that the edcons recruite for a LOT more small groups than we know about.
