Fortress Rome greets Bush

ROME : Police turned Rome into a fortress as anti-war protesters pledged to give US President George W. Bush a heated reception during his 36-hour visit which includes talks with Pope John Paul II and Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Carabinieri police saturated the historic city centre, with heavy concentrations of the paramilitary force along the main thoroughfares and piazzas, as well as bridges, rail stations and airports. Helicopters droned in the sky overhead.

The interior ministry said some 10,000 troops have been mobilised.

Early morning traffic in the city centre was notably lighter as many people stayed away from possible flashpoints. The US State Department on Thursday issued a warning to American citizens living in Italy to stay away from crowded areas.

Around 1,000 demonstrators arrived in Rome by train early Friday to join the street protests scheduled for mid-afternoon, rail authorities said.

Bush and his wife Laura, who arrived at Rome's Ciampino airport shortly after midnight, spent the night at the US ambassador Mel Sembler's heavily guarded residence in the leafy Parioli suburb of the city. Nearby roads were closed to traffic.

The Bush motorcade was set to roll at 11 am (0900 GMT) with a visit to Italian counterpart Carlo Azeglio Ciampi at the Quirinale Palace his first stop.

The highlight of the visit, an audience with Pope John Paul II to discuss their differences over Bush's Iraq policy, was scheduled for noon.

Bush is to present the 84-year-old pontiff with the Congressional Medal of Honour, his country's highest civilian honour, the Vatican said.

The US president was due to attend a wreath-laying ceremony in the afternoon at the Ardeatine Caves outside Rome, the site of one of Italy's worst massacres of civilians at the hands of the Nazis. The ceremony is part of the 60th anniversary commemmorations of the liberation of Rome by Allied forces, the official reason for the Bush visit.

Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who said Thursday he feared anti-war protests could turn violent, is to host Bush at a gala dinner on Friday evening.

The Pope ended his speech with "God bless America." To bad none of us were there to know how much sarcasm was in his voice as he uttered those words.

You know it amazes me the dichotomy of the situation with the Pope. Here he is telling Bush how bad Iraq and the abuses we did on prisoners was: however, his own disciples and representatives in your lands, the priest themselves have molested children.  And look how the church dealt with it all, shame on them.  The Pope does not have the moral authority here at all.  Actually what he did is worse.  It was perpetrated on CHILDREN.  He didn?t mention one word about how the Catholic Church is setting the standard!  They are the King of Child Abuse in the world.  I don?t think any can challenge that statement.  Witness the many current lawsuits about this, it?s just nothing less than shameful.

Thou shall not cast stones against those that live in glass houses.

Please don't be over dramatic "the king of child abuse?" OK point taken but that is untrue. And passing the basket? Never not the Pope. Oh and until anyone here is half as educated as he is  ye should not cast the first stone. I am not catholic or religious in anyway, just my beliefs.

When you think, Catholic priest, you think NAMBLA. Sad but true. At least I do. Show me evidence that this is more common elsewhere. Until then, I crown the Pope!  :nworthy:  :flame:

The pope isn't Jesus, the son of god or the king of jews. so he's a religious figure and the leader of the catholic church. Big deal the catholic church. The catholic church has been involved in scandals inolving the abuse of children. Bush is involved in the abuse of children. what a lovely bunch. both "leaders" could be courageous by saying they were sorry and will eliminate all abuses of children and people.

These days when I think of any church I think of child molesting and the statute of limitations finally getting pushed aside at least a little bit so that people don't have to be so afraid to come forward about what they had to do to have their sins forgiven.

Well you mentioned NAMBLA. This is not a strictly catholic organization. Nor will I try to prove otherwise. This group of sickos come from all walks of life. Hell just the other day a Ringling Brothers circus clown was found with pornographic materials with young boys doing god knows what. Under your reasoning all clowns are pedophiles. All of this sickens me greatly. However the fact is pedophiles will go where the children are ie the boyscouts, circus clowns, priests, pastors, or the park to get their rocks off watching. The case launched against the catholic church was highly publicized as it challenged the statutes of limitations in this country. Therefore, yes for now everyone equates all priests as pedophiles. But if your really interested check out the information yourself. I am not here to prove anything to you. I do find it interesting that as soon as I disagree slightly with your take on things I get the burning angry face at the end of the post. Sorry I won't always agree with you. Once again just my take on the situation.

You're right.

I was kidding around, by pointing out the obvious, in that a LOT of Catholic priests have molested young men/boys. That's all. I'm not trying to make a political statement.

Uh Lezli don't you have a ladies issues class to teach at the trailer you call church of the local protestant rednecks? It's amazing you have time at all to respond to posts here. Question do you peel the cigarette from your lips there before you shout amen when the preacher/local truck driver  brings out the snakes to handle?

Seem over the top? You seem to be good with stereotypes, thought you'd like to know how a percentage of the world thinks of southern protestants.

Catholic priest=pedophile
souther preacher=toothless GED clad snake handler

The way I see it one idiotic stereotype deserves another.
