Can you diversify into related but growing fields? That's the strategy that launched Aspen Health Services, of Huntington Beach, Calif., #413 on this year's list. Aspen's business has its roots in College Health Enterprises, which operates residential psychiatric hospitals for troubled teenagers, a market that is experiencing at least temporary overcapacity as insurers crack down on mental-health expenditures. "It's been tough," says Elliot Sainer, who is president of both Aspen and College Health, describing the "tremendous contraction" College Health's industry has seen. "We're just going to fight to be one of the survivors."
That's why Sainer helped found Aspen, which offers what it calls "outdoor therapy": trips for teenagers that combine wilderness living with traditional therapy. While that related market taps its founders' knowledge, contacts, and skills, Aspen is able to grow by selling insurers on a product that is short-term and intensive -- and thus may cost less than a longer hospital stay.

http://www.isaccorp.org/aspen/aspen-ach ... 12.96.htmlMar 1996- Inc Magazine- Public Relations: Planning Damage Control
A CEO explains the importance of developing a public-relations strategy before a disaster strikes.
Don't wait until disaster strikes to whip up a public-relations strategy. Elliot Sainer, CEO of Aspen Health Services, a wilderness therapy program for troubled teens in Huntington Beach, Calif., already had a publicity plan at work when a teenager died while at a competitor's program in 1994. Still, Aspen beefed up efforts to battle the onslaught of bad press.
As kids withdrew from Aspen's program and new-business calls dropped by 20%, Sainer added an employee to his in-house public-relations team. Already hard at work touting Aspen's safety record to those who referred new business to Aspen, the team sped up the distribution of information on graduates' progress and turned the annual newsletter into a quarterly.
Next, Sainer agreed to a story request from U.S. News & World Report. "We were seeing our industry getting slammed," he says. He allowed the reporter to join one group at the end of its program, when the participating teens are happiest. Sainer was pleased with the article and mailed copies to more than 200 referral sources. Today Aspen is back on track with about $6 million in 1995 revenues and with incoming calls back to normal. Sainer credits the company's survival to the strategy.

Contact: Larry Stednitz Sen Dir of Alternative Youth Adventures.
AYA is a subsidiary of AYS, merged with Community Education Centers of New Jersey- leader in adult corrections. Enable CEC to focus efforts on juveniles.
AYA operated programs in Utah, Montana, and S Carolina for adjudicated youth. Modeled after AAA, in just four and half years, AYA grew from a very small program to one of the largest backcountry-based programs in the country. Currently it operates four programs in three states, serving nearly 200 youth every day and is developing a fifth program.
Programs developed by the merger will not retain the Aspen name; they will be called Alternative Youth Adventures, or ?AYA.?
Of particular interest to consumers is that the Montana, and Utah program has recently begun to open ?AYA? to the private market. They will continue to focus on adjudicated youth, now accepting referrals both from the states as well as from professionals in the private pay sector.

Launches Advocacy Campaign to ?Make Behavioral Health for Youth a Priority?. Campaign is under the direction of the NAPHS Youth Services Committee, chaired by Elliot Sainer.
?The Lewin report and analysis by our Board and the NAPHS Youth Services Committee confirm what we are hearing from many venues ? including the recent report on mental health by the U.S. Surgeon General.
[Note: ? there is only weak evidence for their effectiveness (of RTCs)
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/m ... #treatment ]
Treatment works, but not all young people have equal access, coverage, or opportunity to use the services we know can help improve their lives,? said NAPHS Executive Director Mark Covall.
According to the Lewin report, approximately 20% of children and adolescents (or about 11 million youth ages 9 to17) have a diagnosable mental, emotional, or behavioral health disorder, from attention deficit disorder and depression to bipolar illness and schizophrenia. Many children and youth simply ?fall between the cracks? of the major systems involved in delivering care, which include education, child welfare, and juvenile justice, and mental health and substance abuse authorities, the Lewin report finds. One study suggests only 11% of children at risk receive services in a mental health setting.
The NAPHS-commissioned Lewin Group report provides baseline information on current knowledge and thinking about care for youth with psychiatric, emotional, and behavioral problems. The report is based on a literature review, tested and reinforced by extensive structured interviews with members of the NAPHS Youth Services Committee (comprised of leading providers serving children and youth).

http://www.strugglingteens.com/archives ... een03.htmlJuly 2000- The Eduventures.com Daily Newswire, featured AYS. The article estimated about $58 billion is spent each year in the US ?providing services to children who are troubled or who have special needs.? However, barely 5%, or $3 billion, is provided by the private sector. Since 1994 juvenile crime has been falling, that opens money and resources ?to treating juvenile problems before they became manifest in criminal behavior.? Aspen Youth Services was used as an example of a company that is getting posed to take advantage of this demographic shift. Elliot Sainer, CEO and President of AYS was quoted as saying ?I define at-risk children as a broad spectrum of youths who are at risk of not leading productive lives.? Aspen?s strongest growth is in the area of special education schools. He estimates revenues in 2000 will reach $55 million, a 40 percent growth over 1999, a combination of acquisitions and ?same-store.? The opportunity to provide drop out recovery and at-risk services in independent settings also emerged as one of the earliest bridges for educators into ?private practice.? The US DHHS
estimates that at least one in ten children (approximately six million young people) may have serious emotional disturbance, a common factor in the at-risk population. The desire to serve these students created opportunities for entrepreneurial innovators such as??, and Elliot Sainer at AYS (now Aspen Education Group). These early pioneers in the at-risk market created private alternative programs or contracted with schools to provide specialized services for children who could not succeed in mainstream classrooms.
