Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten (dvd)

Hey Froderik, thanks for the in-depth review of the MC5 stuff. They are a very interesting chapter in the rock-n-roll history.

Now , if your so inclined, I wonder if you might provide a few details about the Widespread Panic, I have one of their cds but I never listen to it.  I put it on once a long time ago but found it uninteresting.  Some people I know really like them though, so I wonder if maybe I just sampled the wrong disc.

I like Joe Strummer a lot.  How was the dvd ??

If you would have justice in this world, then begin to see that a human being is not a means to some end.  People are not commodities.  When human beings are just to one another government becomes obsolete and real freedom is born; SPIRITUAL ANARCHY.

Leonard Nimoy--"Bilbo Baggins"

RTP, I saw a Leonard Nimoy record for sale at the Shady Dog last time I was in Philly.  I was awful tempted to pick it up.  I asked the store owner to put it on so I could hear it.  It was interseting and I have to admit I like Leornard in general, I mean he was Spock dude!  The cat is cool.  Alas it was a 30 dollar record so I passed...what  an interesting record though...

Dig Ray Davies and the Kinks.

Here's what's made the turntable here, lately:

Funny you should ask, because I thought you might be familiar with them (WSP) somehow. I'm not what you'd call a 'fan' per se. In fact, I had never even heard of them until a tape of theirs (along with a few ol' Grateful Dead boots) appeared on my old front lawn one day, together in a case. Someone must have thrown them out of their car window as they were driving by, or perhaps it was someone I knew thinking to themselves, "Fuck it, I'm sick of listening to this stuff, I think I'll throw this bunch of tapes on Frod's lawn for him to find and wonder how they got there," or something like that....

So anyway, lately I had been getting dry on stuff to listen to in the car (and I listen to music in it a lot these days) because I'm too lazy to bother hooking up an mp3 player. And a person gets tired of the same old stuff sometimes, no matter how good it is, thus my decision to dig out the WSP cassette tape which I had only listened to once a long time back, not long after it showed up on my old lawn (this was like ten years ago, when I used to live in a house of my own, with my family.) So anyway, that's why I listened to it, and I found that this particular live recording wasn't bad... it's "jam band" kinda stuff, stuff I hardly ever listen to, so it was a refreshing change in that sense...

And now for the king of all political punks, and my spiritual leader, god rest his soul, Joe Strummer! It was a damn good documentary, I recommend you rent it and watch it asap. It was made a couple of years ago, after he died. It was nicely done as films go, and painted a fairly accurate portrait of Strummer (as well as The Clash) as we know him. Two thumbs up, and some bottles and bricks!!!

Right On Frod!

Last time I was in the Shady Dog I overheard a guy tellin stories about seein Joe Strummer performing on the boardwalk at the Jersey shore, with his guitar case opened up to catch money.  Apparently he had been ripped hard by his record company.  The same guy was also sayin that Strummers folks had been in the British foreign service or something and that he had grown up in foreign lands where he saw lots of poverty and political oppression.

I only got into Joe Strummer a few years ago when a buddy sent me Global-a-Go-Go on disc and I really got off on it, since then I've developed an appreciation for the man and the artist.  It's such a shame we had to lose him.

That Nimoy record is priceless, in a really campy sort of way.  "Highly Illogical" is another great one from that record, but his version of "If I Had A Hammer" is fucking painful to listen to, and NOT because we sang that one in Straight, although I'm sure that fact does up the awfulness quotient.

Was in a real Ray Davies mood the other night, after seeing him perform "You Really Got Me" with a choral group backing him up.  When I first saw the band, I thought, "Oh my God, this is gonna be really bad.......", but then, once they started playing, it was actually really cool.  "Just" another reason that Ray Davies is cooler than Jesus.  On an interesting (to me, anyway) side note, Ray Davies is a very prolific songwriter, and particularly in England, he has penned a lot of hit songs for other people, and not just Kinks covers.  He has written literally dozens of songs that the Kinks never recorded, but were hits for other people, in addition to covers of Kinks songs that were hits for other performers.  You could argue that Ray Davies started both punk AND heavy metal, the opening riff of "You Really Got Me" is all the testimony you need.   Saw a video of him doing that song with Metallica the other night.  Not a big thrill for me, but it did look like the Metallica goons were having fun playing with him.  One of the disappointments of my concert-going career is that I have never seen the Kinks, or even Ray solo.  What with Dave Davies' recent stroke, I will probably never get the chance.
