Teen Challenge is different from the typical teen program, in that the kids must enter willingly. There is an application process the teen must take part in. As for the religious aspects it is very much a Christian centered program, but the teens know that going in, and must have a statement of faith to be admitted - so its not like they are forcing religion on the kids. This is how they are supposed to operate anyway. I wouldn't be to shocked to hear some chapters break the rules; and not at all surprised to learn there is rampant corruption in the leadership.
I have not heard of a case where anyone wanted to leave and had a hard time; but that would be my greatest concern. It seems like an idea environment for developing cult like practices.
I don't think I would call them Heretics. . .
As far as I know, they have a pretty sound interpretation of the gospels - although I have herd they can be very legalistic in their interpretations. Somewhat like the churches of Christ. They may be something akin to a Sect - but that wouldn't make them heretics.
Weather it is a good or bad situation for a drug addled teen probably depends on many varied particulars. Teen Challenge itself varies from Chapter to Chapter; and of corse the kids varrie in unlimited ways. I can imagine scenarios where it is very helpful; or devastating.
So the JJ was set up to allow a Judge to step in when needed, in a quick and paternalistic way, to act in the best interests of the child. Thus technically, a child cannot commit a crime, but instead can be delinquent. They are not arrested, they are apprehended. They are not tried, but there is a hearing. They are not sentenced, they are adjudicated. In exchange for this protection, children give up their right to trial. The rules of evidence are greatly relaxed and Judges are given great leeway in their role. A Judge in JJ only need find that the child requires an intervention, not that the child was proven beyond a reasonable doubt to be guilty of a particular crime. Further, the stated guidelines are that the adjudication is to be the least physically restrictive, and for the shortest possible duration, with rehabilitation as the goal. Incarceration is only to be used in cases where the minor is a threat to society or him/her self and once again, the least restrictive and shortest duration rules are to apply.
Many States are throwing this out of the window by defining terms under which a minor can be charged and tried as an adult. Tough-on-crime advocates say that kids know the difference between between right and wrong and should be held accountable. The critics argue that while the child might know right from wrong, they are not old enough and sophisticated enough to conduct a proper defense under the complex adult legal system and so they end up getting screwed.

What do you mean " these facilities" Hyde is a secondary school, not one of the private lockups your parents sent you to.
You have a kid that smokes a little dope and tell people to fuck off. Parents send the kid to Hyde. That does not make Hyde a treatment facility.

Actually, they plan on filing a lawsuit against ME! They went to some shyster lawyer who found an obscure case that held that children flourish best when they have contact with grandparants and other family members (CONTACT WITH FAMILY MEMBERS??? WHO ARE THEY KIDDING?) so they are going to file suit to require me to let them visit and such with him. Over my freaking dead body! I may have to prove they are unfit based on their treatment of me in order to keep them out of our lives. Funny, I thought conservatives believed that parents knew best how to raise their kids. Guess that was ok when mine sent me off to be tortured into compliance, but not for me when I want to keep my kids away from someone who would do that. The corporation I work for has outlets overseas-and if I have to I'll ask for a transfer to one of them in a country where the laws are different (worked for WWASPS for a while, didn't it?) and stay there till they're dead of old age. They will have no contact with my kids! :flame:

The latest on CTV is that "8 addicted kids have been apprehended and placed into treatment".
Well, let's see. How "addicted" are they?
Kid #1:
clean for several months, but not living at home. In fact, living with her boyfriend under roof of the boyfriend with his parents. Moreover, has a job and doing quite well in Edmonton, thank you very much.
So why was she apprehended? Because her parents were vindictive, that's why.
Moreover, the system is so screwed up that when it came time for review, the judge would not let her go because her parents were not there to give evidence.
Is she pissed off, or what?
And do you think her parents can ever be forgiven for their stupidity?
