The Troubled Teen Industry / Seeking info on lockdown facilities in NY & MS
« on: December 06, 2004, 12:53:00 AM »
I would like to thank everyone who replied to this post back when I first wrote it. I'm back with a little more information on the treatment center my relative is in.
From my mother, I found out that it is located in Petal, MS. This should make a definitive identification possible, no?
The girl's mom paid $37,000 to house her there for the year (which started at the beginning of last summer). She was not allowed to contact her for the first 3 or so months; now they talk on the phone twice a week. The girl is said (by my mom, who gets her information straight from the girl's mom) to be very happy there now (after her experience in the "stricter" (my mom's word) NY facility she was sent there from): playing soccer, even enjoying going to church three times a week. A girl she knew and liked in NY has now also turned up there. She has still begged her mom to let her come home, though.
They will spend Xmas together - the facility will let the girl out to go stay with her mom in her hotel room in MS. I thought that sounded promising, too.
I guess this is all I know. Can anyone give me a positive ID of this facility and some idea if it really is one of the questionable places I have been reading about? I'm not sure what to think now.
FTR, my young relative was *not* evaluated by professionals before being sent away. Her mom was advised by a hotline (possibly one with a religious affiliation, as I know she's something of a fundamentalist?) to send her daughter to the NY center. And that's just what she did - pronto.
TIA for your help.
