Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Who's making it and how?

Interesting question. I'm personally motivated by an inner drive, something that I suppose has always been there, but has been asleep at times. It took me 16 years to complete my bachelor's degree, and an additional 4 years to obtain my medical degree. I am deeply in debt after med school, working for slightly over minimum wage as a resident, and am truly looking forward to completing my training so I can start paying down my debt and maybe even start to save! Even so, becoming a doctor has been worth the blood, sweat, and tears, because I did it myself, with the support of my husband and kids. No handouts from anyone, just alot of hard work, determination, and personal sacrifice.
Down at Grady Hospital, you see alot of folks who feel someone else is responsible for the choices they've made in life. While I believe some folks (mainly kids) truly are victims of our system, I think there are some other people who get lots of handouts, yet still feel entitled to more. I'm really not sure how they contribute to society or why they feel so entitled. Seems like the more some people are given, the less determined they become to work for what they have. Just an observation. Tough question with no right answers.

Einstein actually published 2 theories of relativity. The theory of special relativity was published in 1905 and was verified experimentally. This theory predicted and proved the equivalence of mass and energy (E=mc2, length contraction and time dilation (the "twin paradox"), and the increase of mass with speed. The speed of light has much influence in this theory, while gravity has none. The theory of general relativity, pulished in 1916, had less experimental data supporting it, and gravity does figure into it. I think it was the Mickelson-Morley experiment which dealt with the bending of starlight as it passed the edge of the sun. Basically, the principle of relativity holds that, for any two observers, the laws of physics are the same, regardless of their relative motion. In special relativity, the observers cannot be accelerating; in general relativity, they can be accelerating (gravity being a type of acceleration, or change in velocity over time). Beautiful stuff.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / 'ratting' on our siblings
« on: November 11, 2002, 10:17:00 AM »
Straight really interfered with both of my younger brothers' teenage years. They had to come up to Marietta 2x/wk, sit through sibling raps, not to mention interrogations. One of my brothers (Wallpaper Guy--see his earlier post) was particularly devastated--he gave up friends, mostly out of fear that somehow he'd end up on front row, I think. The final blow was when my parents moved to Marietta from Columbus--there's nothing worse than having to move when you're in junior high or high school. They gave up a lot during those years...

this forum's atmosphere gets mighty hostile, alot like group. yes, free speech is great, but it seems like people here take a few jabs at each other in the name of free speech. it's just not nice. there are better ways of communicating. that's just how i feel--take it or leave it. when you care about other people's opinions, you become their prisoner.

Yes, it is like being back in group. Not a good feeling.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Highly Irresponsible!
« on: October 26, 2002, 12:12:00 PM »
There have been quite a few posts from people describing a syndrome of sleeplessness, depression, listlessness, etc. after discovering this site. I went through it myself and was lucky enough to have a professional to discuss it with. For each "tough" Straight survivor, there is another who is teetering on the edge of hopelessness. Like it or not, this is serious stuff. Marc Shelton's final post was a real wake up call. The reality is, people DO come here seeking help. Many are extremely fragile because their memories, which have been asleep for 20 years, are awakened all of a sudden. Some folks are overwhelmed. Like I said, therapy is not for everybody. But, everyone deserves a shot at rebuilding their self-esteem somehow. Complacency is unacceptable--there are still lives at stake.

The main job of a therapist is NOT to analyze, but to assist and guide a patient/client, through thoughtful self analysis, in establishing a conscious connection between issues from the past and how they impact one's present life. By recognizing these connections, a person gains insight and can then begin to work through his/her issues. Many of us have experienced extreme distrust of any type of counseling, perceiving it as more mind control. Not everyone needs a therapist. However, anyone experiencing psychic pain related to PTSD/anxiety is fragile and requires a safe environment, free from confrontation or criticism, in order to begin working through those issues. Neither this forum nor a group of Straight survivors can CONSISTENTLY provide that type of support. I would not discount the value of therapy as an adjunct to the healing process, but deeply understand the reluctance toward seeking this type of help. I wish us all well.

Get a therapist. There ARE good therapists out there. I'm lucky to have found one. This website has its negative aspects, which have been amply illustrated in several of the threads over the last couple of weeks. You need to feel safe. A good therapist can help you make conscious connections between what happened to you in Straight and how that influences your behavior and emotional well-being today. You will not get all the help you need here. My advice would be to check out all the therapists on your insurance plan...find out who specializes in PTSD-type issues. If you have no insurance, many therapists work on a sliding scale. It's worth the effort. I wish you well. Kris
