Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp
« on: April 25, 2018, 11:08:51 PM »
More than twenty-five ears after Dianne Mirosh first began begging for taxpayers to shell out for the All About Receiving Cash thought reform program, yet another conservative place-holder is pandering up in Edmonton.  And again, the anonymous part of AA is out the window for the AARC subjects.  Leela Aheer has no problem with putting a bunch of children on display to drum up cash for the Wiz, without the faintest concern for their privacy.

"Mrs. Aheer: Mr. Speaker, I apologize in advance. I’ll go fast
because I have quite a few introductions. One of the largest
privileges of being in this position is meeting some incredible
people. The individuals who are here are here from AARC, the
Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre. They’re advocating for their
treatment program, which is specially designed for adolescents 12
to 21 years of age who are diagnosed with substance use disorder.
As I say your names, if you wouldn’t mind please rising: Byron,
Tammy, Dona, Deb, Robyn, Maureen, Joan, Dennis, another Joan,
Pamela, Darryl, Elizabeth, Wendy, Lexi, Linda, Michel, Melissa,
Keegan, and Rudi. I hope that I haven’t forgotten anybody else. If
I have forgotten, please stand with the group. I thank you so much
for your service to youth. Members, please join me in extending our
traditional welcome to the Assembly."

AARC is once again scraping the bottom of the barrel in an attempt to have people believe that their thought reform cult is a real drug treatment program.  The very thoroughly disgraced Step-craft asshole Ken Winters is back polluting Calgary along with the usual collection of sect-members and wretched University of Calgary shills.

I was corresponding with this ridiculous human being in 2012, but eventually he blocked my emails:

In 2009, after the Fifth Estate exposed the behaviour modification program operated by the AARC sect, the Alberta Government failed to undertake an investigation of AARC.  No one from Alberta Justice or the Ministry of Children's Services attempted to investigate any aspect, from the illegal thought reform techniques to the role of the unregulated, unlicensed foster homes used by AARC to isolate the subjects while they are being broken, to the problem of sexual exploitation and assault inherent in the "Lord of the Flies" system common to all the Seed/Straight/Kids operations, to the confinement of people who do not suffer from the medical condition that AARC claims to treat.  No analaysis of the significant number of deaths among male "graduates".
Instead, the Calgary Police opened an investigation into people who were pushing for an investigation of AARC.  Five months passed after the airing of the show and AARC finally sued Christine Lunn.  She was given an affidavit to sign, stating that she had lied in her Fifth Estate interviews, and an offer was made to drop the suit in exchange for signing.  She refused, and the suit has been ongoing to for almost nine years.  Scott Fowkes, who also appeared on the show, signed his affadavit, and then apparently entered the adolescent therapeutic community (for "reconditioning"?), although he was almost thirty years old.

After the airing of the program, a contract IT worker at AARC obtained AARC computer files in an effort to aid an investigation into the unlicensed, unregulated behaviour modification program.  In 2011 AARC sued her, and later her lawyer.  In 2014 AARC sect leader Dean Vause made a complaint to the Law Society about the lawyer, demanding his disbarment and asking for a report to the Justice Minister with the aim of having the lawyer criminally charged.

In the event, the Law society reprimanded the lawyer, made no Notice to the Profession, no Notice to the Ministry, levied no fine, and declined the offer to pay costs, imposing instead only half the costs associated with the complaint.

AARC also sued Rachael O'Neill, Bodana Dye, Simi Bates, the CBC, and three individuals from CBC.
To date, the Alberta Government refuses to have the Ministry of Children's Services conduct an investigation into AARC.  No AARC survivors who have defected from the sect have been interviewed by any government officials, and the current Premier, who claimed in 2009 that she would demand an investigation, now plays the same game her predecessors in government did, refusing to take any action.

According to the Canadian Government, a Canadian male has a 2.6 percent chance of dying by age 45.  For male AARC survivors, it is not looking quite so good.

The behaviour of Detective David Rock appears to meet the criteria of professional misconduct with regard to the handling of the complaints of both Rachael O'Neill, and Christine Lunn.  It seems highly unusual for a police officer investigating a sexual assault to maintain a line of communication to keep possible accessories informed as to the disposition of the investigation:
"Dr. Vause spoke with Richelle Hall (Christine Lunn’s counselor at the time of Christine’s treatment at AARC) and Norlien Johnson(Christine Lund’s Senior Clinical Counselor) Both Richelle and Norlien stated that there was no report or documentation on a sexual assault. Also, Richelle, to the best of her knowledge, was clear that Christine was not forced to sign any documentation.
Police informed Dr. Vause that Rachael’s file has been closed. Detective Rock indicated that “she had no intention of proceeding with an investigation”. Police met with Christine Lunn on Friday, March 20 to inquire if she wants to pursue any action but police anticipated her file will also be closed. Dr. Vause will continue to keep in touch with the detectives involved. Detective Rock emailed Dr. Vause stating “it was unanimous that her complaint was not criminal in nature”. Dr. Vause will consult with Det. Rock for a final update on the investigations."

Now what Christine was referring to was an event in which she alleged that she was coereced into performing push-ups while her old-comer watched her and masturbated.  In this situation, Christine Lunn had been assigned to a male Oldcomer and was in the temporary foster home, or "host home", operated by the family.  As the oldcomer was of major age, and Christine Lunn was a minor and under the de facto authority of this oldcomer, consent to this act cannot be given.  Does the use of a minor child under one's care as a prop for masturbation consistute a crime?  Detective Rock was apparently of the opinon that it does not.

Despite the fact that the CBC Fifth Estate Program "Powerless" aired nationally, Calgary Police Service did not undertake any investigation of AARC.  The opposite occurred.  A CPS officer, Dominick Mayhew, began investigating people who were raising concerns about AARC.  Eventually CPS Detective David Rock conducted interviews with a number of women who complained about being sexually assaulted while they were clients or while they were under the supervision of AARC staff subsequent to completing the behaviour modification program.  Rock ended the investigations.  It emerged later that Rock was in communication directly with Dean Vause while Rock was allegedly investigating the complaints of these women.  This excerpt of text from an AARC document outlining AARC's damage control strategy after the airing of the CBC program seems to indicate significant breaches of ethical conduct by Rock, and possible illegal behaviour by Rock and Vause:

"Police Investigation
Dr. Vause met with detectives with the Calgary Police Service before and after the airing of “Powerless”.   AARC & Dr. Vause’s home is monitored by the police. The police recommend to not lay criminal
charges at this time but suggested AARC may have
grounds for a civil action.   recent quote from Det. Rock)
Dr. Vause has been in contact with Detective Dave
Rock of the sex crimes unit and an investigation is
proceeding – Detective Rock appears to be closing
Rachael’s file “Thank-you for this information. It has allowed
me to clear this case already. I have spoken to the ‘victim’ who is happy with the documentation. She was horrified that I asked about Penner as she said,” I didn’t want to ask about him.” –for whatever reason.   I can finish my report and put this away. Thanks again –Dave”
AARC’s past vice Chair Dr. Martin Atkinson has confirmed Dr. Vause was proactive to Simmie’s allegation of sexual harassment and it was resolved with Simmie, her father & the Executive Director, Norm Haines – We have asked for a copy of the sexual harassment file from AARC’s lawyer at the time of the incident, Greg Stirling
Dr.
Rock for a final update on the investigations.
John Lojek suggested that if the police only give a verbal confirmation that they have conducted their investigation and no charges are being laid, then there should be a formal letter from AARC confirming the verbal advice provided by the police so that there is something in writing as to the disposition of the criminal charges. The name and contact information for the investigating officer is also required since he will be a witness."

It is quite remarkable that Vause, who could potentially be guilty of criminal negligence in sexual assaults suffered by clients while under his control, was consulting with David Rock.  Onc again, AARC has turned reality on it's head and the perp is afforded the response due a victim, and the victims are treated as perpetrators.  This text certainly begs the question as to why Dean Vause was contacting CPS in relation to the "Powerless" program before it aired.

In any discussion of the Alberta Adolescent Reovery Centre sect, and the thought reform program that it runs under the guise of treating "addiction", the two principle underlying issues are the behaviour modification techniques used, and the structure of social and professional connections that have permitted the group to continue operating.  I will undertake to analyze both aspects in an effort to gain a clear picture of this complex problem.  To begin, here is a list of eight criteria of thought reform put forward by Robert Lifton:

"1)Milieu Control. This involves the control of information and communication both within the environment and, ultimately, within the individual, resulting in a significant degree of isolation from society at large.
2)Mystical Manipulation. The manipulation of experiences that appears spontaneous but is, in fact, planned and orchestrated by the group or its leaders in order to demonstrate divine authority, spiritual advancement, or some exceptional talent or insight that sets the leader and/or group apart from humanity, and that allows reinterpretation of historical events, scripture, and other experiences. Coincidences and happenstance oddities are interpreted as omens or prophecies.
3)Demand for Purity. The world is viewed as black and white and the members are constantly exhorted to conform to the ideology of the group and strive for perfection. The induction of guilt and/or shame is a powerful control device used here.
4)Confession. Sins, as defined by the group, are to be confessed either to a personal monitor or publicly to the group. There is no confidentiality; members' "sins," "attitudes," and "faults" are discussed and exploited by the leaders.
5)Sacred Science. The group's doctrine or ideology is considered to be the ultimate Truth, beyond all questioning or dispute. Truth is not to be found outside the group. The leader, as the spokesperson for God or for all humanity, is likewise above criticism.
6)Loading the Language. The group interprets or uses words and phrases in new ways so that often the outside world does not understand. This jargon consists of thought-terminating clichés, which serve to alter members' thought processes to conform to the group's way of thinking.
7)Doctrine over person. Members' personal experiences are subordinated to the sacred science and any contrary experiences must be denied or reinterpreted to fit the ideology of the group.
8)Dispensing of existence. The group has the prerogative to decide who has the right to exist and who does not. This is usually not literal but means that those in the outside world are not saved, unenlightened, unconscious and they must be converted to the group's ideology. If they do not join the group or are critical of the group, then they must be rejected by the members. Thus, the outside world loses all credibility. In conjunction, should any member leave the group, he or she must be rejected also."

A quick perusal of AARC's website shows very clearly that they have never abandoned the Seed/Straight/Kids model of using former clients as staff.  Of the two Clinical Directors, one is Dean Vause, former Kids of Bergen county accomplice, and Andrew Morton, a Calgary police officer and long-time member of the AARC sect.  The seven Clinical Counsellor positions are held by two women who supplied their children as AARC clients, and at least three former clients.  Forty-five years on there is an unbroken chain leading from the Seed right through to the current AARC counselors.

The Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, continues to operate using the principle elements of the Thought Reform process used in Straight Inc. facilities.  Dean Vause remains as Clinical Director, along with a former client and current Calgary Police Service officer, Andrew Morton.  The presence of a CPS officer in this organization is of great public concern and points to the critical need to renew scrutiny of AARC.

Feed Your Head / Ken Burns Rubbish Vietnam Program

I have been watching this shit with a mix of amusement and disgust. The sheer absurdity of trying to paint the US involvement in Vietnam as the result of the best intentions gone awry puts this Koch and banker-funded tripe in the realm of the surreal.  The use of the term "Viet Cong" to refer to the NLF is just one aspect of the atavistic red scare garbage that unerlies this profaning of history.
There was no "South Vietnam" until the US built it after the Vietnamese resistance crushed the French imperial lackeys for whom the US tax-payer footed the bill in the fifties.  When the French proved unable to murder enough Vietnamese people on their own land to keep control of the region, Uncle Sam sent Ed Lansdale, one of the worst human beings who ever lived, to foster a puppet regime of Roman Catholic quislings and drug lords in order to maintain Japan's cheap food supply.
Somehow this fact seems to have escaped Burns and Co. in their formulation of this eighteen-hour homage to the heroism of anti-communist American jihadis.

"If Clinton prevails in the general election Trump may disappear, but the fascist sentiments will expand. Another Trump, perhaps more vile, will be vomited up from the bowels of the decayed political system."

Tacitus' Realm / Does Obama Use LSD?

"No nation dares to attack us or our allies because they know that’s the path to ruin."
This little gem seems at odds with the non-stop yelping from the US State Dept., and sundry neo-con mouthpieces, about Russia invading the stillborn Imperial puppet state in the Ukraine.  Although Russia clearly did not invade the Ukraine, for it they did the Russian army would have been in Kiev eighteen months ago, it has been the underlying theme of Imperial whining for some time.
Does Barry need a good intervention and an opportunity to do a moral inventory?

Feed Your Head / Contradictions of Finance Capitalism
« on: January 17, 2016, 01:47:20 PM »
"Financialization has involved increasingly exotic forms of financial instruments and the growth of a shadow-banking system, off the balance sheets of the banks. The repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 symbolized the almost complete deregulation of a financial sector that has become complex, opaque, and ungovernable."
