I do want it make it known to anyone that may have the authority to pass such a baton that I would be more than honored to take thestraights.com into the fold and give it a home to preserve all of Wes' work.

Ginger and I helped to salvage and resurrect kidsofnorthjersey.com when it was having difficulty and was in danger of going away forever.  I found it a good home and it is still online today.

My primary focus since 2001 has been my own website at kidsofelpaso.com, but I am certain that I have enough room for thestraights.com.

I would certainly hate for all Wes' efforts to be stifled because hosting bills didn't get paid, etc.

I have been a way for a while, but Wes's site says that the account has been suspended??
Was there no way that we could keep everything online at www.thestraights.com?
It would be such a shame to lose all of his work.

"Not My KID", what a piece.  I have it and you can usually always find a copy on ebay.  A couple of interesting tidbits about the flick.  Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, was in the movie.  Shawnee Smith was also in the movie (snippet at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHxBP9oatJE).  She also was the murderess in the SAW series of films, is also on the "Becker" show on tv, and has a band, Fydolla Ho--the band's myspace is at http://www.myspace.com/fivedollaho.  Interesting to see this troubled teen turned right in group yelling "coming home" (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0YvFWF7oPo) and later was in the SAW movies killing the shit out of people in wicked ways.

In KIDS of El Paso, the one single movie that we were allowed to watch was also Midnight Express.  Strange one of many common threads with both KIDS and STRAIGHT.  I drooled seeing all the hash, but the film had no other effect on me.  I guess it was yet another failed attempt to try to show us how drugs could "make our life unmanageable."

I'm just surprised every time I read about these small groups.  I never experienced anything lower that about 200 I would guess.  That may be conservative.

With a small group that aspect was not captured in the movie. But that may very well have been the reality when Nick was in KIDS. I will say that aside from the small group size, the things portrayed in the film were for the most part just like Straight.  If a movie about Straight is ever made, I think the only way to come close to showing it is film a huge group of people....I am sure a lot of extras and a higher budget would be needed. Wow how to you train 200 people how to motivate, how to verbally abuse each other, etc? That would be one huge task.....but a necessary one to show Straight accurately.

It may have not been reflected in the film as Nick was in KIDS years after other facilities were closed.  New Jersey, the first and last KIDS facility to remain open was under investigation which had an impact on the number of intakes, reducing numbers of teens in group.  Group was definitely smaller during the latter years but we definitely also had anywhere from 150-250 teens in group at a time in KIDS.

Ah, the old west Texas town of El Paso and another one of Newton's old mindstomping grounds.  There are many in El Paso from KIDS that understand this tune.  Myself included.

He wasn't in KIDS, but I kind of grew up with the owner of Club 101 there in EPT.  Not sure if he's the current owner, but he started the joint years and years ago.

Have a good show, man.  Wish I could be there.  Eating tamales, drinking beers, smoking $30.00 ounces, and listening to music such as that which tells a bit of the story of the darkest chapter of my life.

Thanks for your words.

check it out, I'm playing a show with my screen name..

When I was on fourth phase I was sitting in World Geography class at Burkner..  The teacher was Miss Waltrop..  Her nephew was sitting in with the class..  We started talking and he was a cop out from KIDS in El Paso.  At that time I didn't know what KIDS was and he didn't know what Straight was..  He were both just kinda shocked at how simular the programs were..   KIDS was stricter in the ways of privlidges earned later in phases than they were at straight..
At Straight we did school/work on 3rd phase..  KIDS, I think he said, was fourth., etc.......

We clicked as friends and he was there the next couple of days..
so we talked about the programs and shit till Straight staff told me I was not allowed to talk to him anymore..  I had mentioned him and KIDS to an executive staff in a one-on-one..  She was unaware of what KIDS was at first and later told me I would not be allowed to talk the guy anymore.
The next day at school he started talking to me and I told him I couldn't talk to him anymore cause of the straight rules..
That was the last day he was there.

I don't want to come across upset...I'm not.

I am just curious who made and who circulated the Newton Flier door to door in Miller Newton's neighborhood on 011505?   The flier references my website and includes a blue chair graphic I made that was lifted from my site and incorporated into the flier.  I did not see nor know about the flier prior to distribution and no one asked my feelings on the current saga with Newton and his church.  Of course I am not saying that I disagree with the flier, however I think better communication between some of us would only strengthen our efforts, no matter what they may be.

Curious.

KIDS of BC's first black victim was it's first victim.  The first teen admitted to the New Jersey KIDS program was a black teen named Lars.
Just a useless piece of trivia I remembered when reading the title of another post.  How is group "group" with one teen anyway?  Curious.

I have been trying to recall details from that speech for quite some time.

The KIDS programs did use the same speech to address the audience just before open meeting.
"Deep and implicit trust" mantra included.
It always ended with http://www.kidsofelpaso.com

I thought I would ask again since many more ex-Dallas STRAIGHT people have come across the site since the last time I posted...

Does anyone know of any specific KIDS (El Paso, North Jersey, and/or Greater Salt Lake City) teens that were admitted to the Dallas STRAIGHT program after the KIDS facilities closed?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I OCR'd the entire article from the entire TM magazine I have.  Did I miss a few pages???

I am glad that the article gave your husband some insight into the program.  It helps when significant others try to grasp such an experience that is so close to literally impossible to explain.  I was married for about a decade when all of the sudden I was spending countless days on end researching and building kidsofelpaso.com.  If my other half (3/4 really) didn't try to understand, I would have been in the doghouse many years ago.

Well wishes Taureana~
