Title: Dallas Straight 89-90
Post by: jraypdxxx on December 30, 2004, 10:37:00 PM
This is Jim Horn and I am just tripping out to see that people are out there. Does anyone remember Elmer Lockett, Brian Lorenz, Will Vaught, Michael Gattis, the bad boys......
Oh my God people we are free...free to do whatever we want to run wild and naked in the strrets....well at 33, I'm not doing that much any more. I'm married and work very hard at a film and video post-production house, as an assistant editor. I don't drink and drug, I actually live a quite, healthy life, but it took many years to get here. Sometimes, I really miss certain people and wish we could all get together, somtime. What about that weird kid Ian...I ran into his brother here in Portland one night, I was wearing a Straight shirt. It was weird. write me back if you know me, I've been wondering about ya'll!!![ This Message was edited by: jraypdxxx on 2004-12-30 19:41 ]

Was Brian Lorenz the really skinny skater dude that always wore black?
Jim, I remember your name very well, but can't picture your face.  I remember Mike Gattis, he was a little dude, pretty young too, if I'm remembering right.  I remember Elmer's name, (was he a black kid?) and Will Vaught too.[ This Message was edited by: taureana on 2005-01-11 06:12 ]

I saw Gatis about a year or so after I got out in the Irving Mall....My first night in Straight while going to Jason P's host home, Mike asked me if I jacked off....I knew I was in a fucked up place at that very moment.

Jim, I write a lot so if you want to do any colaboration let me know.  I have some 50 page works on Straight burried somewhere.

Funny...Man - the things that were talked in there and the things that went on...

I look back and think about things like - The piss bucket....Everyone in line during exercise rap rubbing the guy in fronts of you's shoulders, strip down every night....things that at the time became normal...before and after seemed crazy.

I tell you what...right after I got out (about 6 months, my girlfriend came and grabbed me by my belt loop and I almost freaked out....All in all though I met some good people and it was just a chapter in life...but what does it say we are all here some 10-15 years later talking about it?

My mom lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I would love to tell you about my final escape, via e-mail. It has to do with my parents, it's a fucked up story. My mom is doing great, she loves life and sells high-end realestate. That's so funny you mentioned cleaning the kitchen, because that's one thing she remembered vividly, you rushing up and doing the dishes. I explained to her that compared to what we had been doing all day at the building, cleaning a kitchen actually seemed fun......Sick, we were. Sick, straight made us....I'm better now, though. Thank somebody. I'm waiting for your e-mail.

I also remember that it was cold...we did come in about the same time...you a little after me, I believe. Was it 88, though?? Are you sure it wasn't 89?????? It had to be 89, right?????????

I got out after only 10 short moonths - November...I think I spend half of them frozen on day 12 (or whatever day you could ask for Talk and Responsibilities)...Justin Petticrew (or something like that ) froze me.....anyway...yea, 10 months...seems like nothing when you compare it to the years guys like Gatis and Vance and everyone else did...still it was long enough for me.  My folks pulled me.  I got busted on the phone and I knew the next day I was going to be sat back....My parents were visiting that night at the host home and I told them my friends were picking me up from Midland tonight (that night)...  and that I out of there.  My Dad was becoming tired with all STRAIGHTS BS and he told me to just wait until tommorow and he'd get me out himself...I don't know why I trusted him, but my friends actually did show up that night and started honking outside....I got sat back the next day...They took my wallet and belt (oh those 3rd phaser luxeries) and sat me in Chair 1 then Ms. Petito came and got me and said we are having a meeting with my folks.  Her and Ms. Kiniky told my parents how I would just go back to drugs, that I was a liar and I had just got put back for it...It didn't wash with my folks and they pulled, but they were right...I went right back  to it all....but I'm good now.

Elmer Lockett, was that the guy whos older brother shot the cop in downtown Dallas and than got shot to death by other cops at the sceen?
I remember the incident, but thought the guys name was Emmit.  There were only 2 black kids during my time.  Do you know or guesstimate the dates Elmer was in?

It was Elmer, he was 14, on a court order. He was short and stock, a really cool kid. I don't know about his brother, that doesn't sound right. My very first day, I was parked right next to Elmer and as we had our hands on our knees, he was scratching my hand with his unusual long fingernails, after asking him to stop several times, he jumped on top of me and we went flying backwards, with this little black kid kicking the shit out of me...we became great friends afterwards, but it took a while.

Jim Horn[ This Message was edited by: jraypdxxx on 2005-01-06 15:59 ]"

I did not wear glasses.  Went in 08/1988 and copped out in 05/1989 when I turned 18.  I am short and thin, my hair then was either red or brown, depending on how much of it had grown out when you came in.  You may be thinking of Lori Barnes, she had blonde curly hair and wore glasses, and was the only 4th phaser for awhile.  I was on 4th with Marilee Kossack.

The Walls unit is in downtown Huntsville, right next to the Sam Houston State University Campus.  They call it the Walls because there is like a 50 foot brick wall surrounding the prison, like a fortress.

When I got out I immediatly went to making new freinds and getting high...I was out...of course I didn't graduate the program, but when I ran into ex-straight mates we'd have causal conversation and that was it....partially because I didn't know what they thought of me....they knew I was getting loaded.  Keith House (after he got out) once told me that some of the people would talk about seeing me at the Irving Mall and how I looked like shit...(thanks Keith). ..Still it amazes me that many of you hung out after Straight.....was that because you were trying to stay sober together or getting high together?
I wish I had kept in touch....I wish I had been able to stay sober (which my 'relapse' was within 48 hours of release...)  So what brought y'all together...?  Is there anyone who stayed sober after STRAIGHT?
D
Title: Dallas Straight 89-90
Post by: taureana on January 12, 2005, 04:14:00 PM
When I first got out, I did not hang out with anyone from Straight.  I lived in Huntsville, and the only person from Huntsville was Pat C. who was still in.  I did go see Allison Boggs, but I was for the most part trying to stay sober, and I could tell that she was not doing well.  She was hanging out with Kim (I forget her last name... probably before your time), and I knew Kim was screwing up.  They had both been junkies pre-Straight.

Anyway, I ended up relapsing, getting shipped off to Connecticut to live with my sister.  Got clean again, then relapsed, moved back to Texas, enrolled myself in an outpatient program (actually looked into going back to Straight, but Ms. Petito I think was gone by that time).  I found out right after I got into the outpatient program that Pat was out of Straight, so I looked him up.  We never hung out pre-Straight.  I was country & he was goth.  But I knew I had to change people, places, things....

I had a little over a year clean when I relapsed.  Ended up later in life getting 5 years totally sober, and went another 3 years before I started smoking pot again.

You ditched him twice??

Anyways, it was just strange to me that people who were in, hung out afterwards...

Some of my friends from Midland had been in and we knew each other before and after...but I never hung with any of the folks I was in with.

I did come accross Mike Gatis, Ron Bowden, Sasha, Keith House, Tyler, all after I got out, but I was already getting high and wasn't sure about them...it made it awkward....

I hung out with Chris McNeil a few times when I got out...but in the end I couldn't live Straight Edge....I'd like to see him again and Ron Bowden...who was the coolest 5th phaser in my time there..

D. So, you ditched him twice?? That for some reason cracked me up. But, yes at least twice. It wasn't anything personal against Patrick, and yes it's the same guy. He just happened to live with a guy (me) that had deep rooted hatered toward the place, hatred like I have never experienced before or after Straight. Haetred, what a weird feeling.

Hey guys
Chris Cherry here.I havent been to this site in months. i saw a message from jim on another site and thougt i'd check it out.alot of my memories of straight and the folks i was in with are sketchy, but you guys have touched on afew things i remember.the guy with the fried hair was Brian, i cant remember the last name, he was from some where in east texas. i do remeber day one he came in with staight hair, day two it was a huge fro. i cant belive i cant think of his last name. i went to school with him, burke jackson, and robbie petticrew.and the little black guy was elmer, and yes his older brother did shoot somebody, and was shot dead.he actually made it to second phase then he hauled ass from my weeekend host home with our newcommers(one of whom was vance, the only time he copped out in his long career there).elmer took the newcomers to wash there hands for dinner, about 10 minutes later i went to check on them, only to find they left through my little sisters window(the only one in the house that didnt have an alarm).ron  bowden is one of the coolest mofo's ever. he came in a few days after me. i dont think his program was longer than 18 months.mine was 13 months 10 days and 6 hours( of pure hell).i know his wasnt much longer.last i heard
he had some sort of degree in music from north texas and was putting together somekind of band but thats been about 12 years ago. as for tyler his program was one month shy of 3 years almost exactly.i beleive it was the longest in staight dallas' history. i remember him saying somthing about one of execs. wanting to keep him in for 1 more month just so it would be a round 3 years. he, james hardy, todd townley, and i shared an apartment for a couple of months, till we did something to piss tyler off, and he left in the middle of the night to go back to houston. a few months later i heard he died in a car accident.
i'm wondering who irving bound is, i'm sure i know ya but, i cant put it together.i'd love to hear from anyone that remembers me. [email protected]

I re-sent the email.  And yeah, I remember Pat telling me bunches of stories about phasers copping out and him having to chase guys down.  He was there for like 22 months before he commenced.  We only talked via email in the past 6 months.  I could get you in touch with him, if you'd like.  Reply to my private email address, and I'll get it to you.

we all kind of had the fashionable bowl, but poor Roy really got the shaft on his doo. I don't remember where he lived exactly, I was only over there once and I don't have fond memories of it...kind of a mental block.

Wow what a trip down memory lane to see so many names. Always wondered what happened to so many of the phasers I did time with. Everyone probably who was a girl anyways, remembers my host home the best. Pirzchalski, not a name one forgets (just doesn't have the foggiest clue how to spell or say it). I guess anyone who might remember me (all 23 months from May of 1989 to April of 1991) might remember Jason Blanton too. Note that as of October 1994 Jason and I married in Big Bend, Texas but I will be legally having my name changed back to the name no one can spell or say seeing as our divorce was final last month.
Lael doesn't your step-dad or ex as I don't know your situation still talk to Jasons Dad? It is good to see so many unscathed. What a trip!!  :silly:

Hey for whatever its worth Brian had a hosthome in grapevine and my stepmom still keeps in contact with the family. I don't think he did too well right after but then again which one of us can make that claim!
Jim, I am pretty sure you chewed my ass out on more than one occassion for one great sin or another. Not a holding a grudge though just thought it may jog your memory on who I was.
So I saw mention of Will V does anyone know what happen to him or Scott ? He was tall and skinny.  Last I remember he was hanging out with Will right after it all fall apart along with Sophia?  Anyone know what happen to them?

Hi Lael, Marla hear. It is good to hear from you, I hope you are doing well! I found this site about a month ago and it has brought back so many unpleaseant memories. I had not thought about that place in years. I will never forget my first night at your host home and breaking out your window to escape. I had a friend that was in Straight and she had told me all about it so I knew what I was getting into, I was determined to get out of there.

Linda...Wow!  Great to hear from you.  Sorry to hear about your divorce.  I'm going through one myself.  Hard stuff.  My ex-stepdad, Gary.  I really don't know what's up with him.  He and my mom divorced more than 10 years ago.  Was your host home in Colleyville?  Did you know of any host homes in Colleyville?

Hi Marla.  Hope you're doing well.  I'll never forget your first night either.  I had no idea what was going on in that pretty little blonde head of yours.  Oh, and I remember being so sick that I didn't even hear those crazy bedroom alarms.  How could someone not hear those things?! Never mind the sound of your body as it pushed through the shattering glass.  What must that Texaco attendant have thought?

I'd love to get together and catch up and I'm back in the Dallas area.  Let me know if you put something together.

please, please, please except my apologize for yelling @ you, (ripping you a new one). I'm sure you understand that in my head it was the only way I was getting out. Get on third phase, get a car and leave, simple. Sorry again....really, I didn't care if you sang in your head, picked something up w/o asking...I just really needed to get away from the place and I did...4 times. My favorite was at Brian L's host home. There they had a lock on the window that allowed the window to open 6 inches. I dropped my shorts right in the very inside of the closet and waited and waited and waited....with 5 others in the room, I retrieved my shorts from under the closet..tied my bedsheet to the bunk bed and shimmied my torso out the two story, 6 inch window opening...no shit, no shirt..my body was so bruised and scrapped....but I did it, to be caught and returned just days later. God to have been a fly on the wall when they woke up, I cracked up the whole time, and I love Brian L to death. We were buddies, but again I had to go!

Hey Everybody,  It's Chris Cox.  I saw a few names on here that I remember.  What a trip.  A few years after Straight Mark Gould and I moved to Orange County California.   I had a son who is now 9.  I have stayed in rouch with a few people like Matt Seidell and Roby Petigrew.  I talked to Will Vaught when I was in Tyler about a year ago.I talked to Jennifer Laor about 3 months ago.  I think about Staght from time to time.  What a fucked up experience.  I don't really talk about it with alot of people because its kind of hard to explain.  I am sure most of you can relate.  If anyone wants to say hi my email adress is [email protected].

Chris - did you get started over or something?  Or maybe it took you a long time to get to 2nd phase?  Not sure - I think I remember some of the girls getting to go to your host home for awhile.  But I don't think I ever did.

if this is the same Chris Cox that was a staffer in 91' in irving, i just wanted to let you know that you were a good person...

i remember you as a caring person who honestly had no "cruel intentions"

i was only there from march- june 91', when i walked...my name is lisa, but you probally wouldn't remember me....don't know...don't care, but you were one of the people who had a little bit of hope to give to ALL of the kids there..

i HATE straight and most of the people who were accociated with it when i was there, but you are 1 of about 5 people that were not one of those horrible souls

I went between the Cox host home and the Jones host home. Both the homes had boys in Straight. I think I remember something about Chris being out of Straight at one time but the host home was still open and then he came back? I have no clue what happened but I was allways curiuos how a host home was still open while the child was not at Straight.

Heath here.  I recognize many names and people from the past.  Many of you I considered friends.
I found this site out by accident and it sure brings back memories... some good, some bad, but interesting.  As the time passes, I still remember alot of good friends and unforgetable times.

Hi Heath, Carmel (Woods) Fales here.

You were on staff for most of my program. Leal C. was my perm host sister.  I dont recall having any specific beefs with you as a staff member, but I do think you might run into a few here who might, just to let you know.  I dont know if it makes any difference to you, just heads up.

Glad you found the site and i hope its helpful to you in whatever way you may be searching for!

Welcome!
