Bush: 'No point taxing rich'

Washington - US President George W Bush said on Monday that there's no point in taxing the rich because they just dodge their tax bill anyway.
"Real rich people figure out how to dodge taxes," Bush said during a campaign stop in suburban Washington.
Bush's rival in the November 2 election, Democratic Senator John Kerry, has pledged to scrap the president's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans in a bid to rein in the record US budget deficit.
"You've got to be careful about this rhetoric, we're only going to tax the rich. You know who - the rich in America happen to be the small business owners," Bush said.
As part of his re-election pitch, Bush has vowed to ask Congress to make permanent some of his tax cuts that are due to expire in coming years.

...Economic issues also promise to play a key role in determining the final outcome. Bush did his part to get in a few words on that, attacking Democratic opponent John Kerry's plan to raise taxes on the wealthy as evidence of the "philosophical divide here in this campaign."
"Let me put it to you bluntly. In a changing world, we want more people to have control over your own life. And that's a difference. There's a difference in philosophy, when you think about it," Bush said.
"That's why you've got to be careful about this rhetoric, we're only going to tax the rich. You know who the ... the rich in America happen to be the small-business owners. That's what that means," Bush said.
"Just remember, when you're talking about, oh, we're just going to run up the taxes on a certain number of people ... first of all, real rich people figure out how to dodge taxes. And the small-business owners end up paying a lot of the burden of this taxation," Bush said.
Kerry's Virginia campaign spokesman, Jonathan Beeton, was also talking philosophical divides after the speech.
"We've already heard from President Bush that he thinks of the very rich as his base, so this is no surprise. He should know a lot about how the very rich live their lives," Beeton told The Augusta Free Press.
"But being very rich shouldn't give one an out to avoid supporting our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and paying your fair share for all of the other core needs that we share in this country," Beeton said.

I love this article. here's a warm up...
"You can't read a newspaper if you can't read," the President said at one point when he spoke about the success his administration has had in teaching children how to read. When responding to a question posed by a Native American journalist on what he thought about the sovereignty of the Indian tribes in the U.S., Bush could only respond with something like "sovereignty is well ... sovereignty, and if you have sovereignty you are sovereign." Say what?

BUSH TO DECLARE WAR ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Native Tongue Would Replace N. Korea in Axis of Evil
A just-released text of President George W. Bush's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention reveals that Mr. Bush intends to announce his boldest initiative to date, declaring war on the English language.
According to the text of the speech, advance copies of which were made available to reporters today, Mr. Bush will give the English language an
official slot in the Axis of Evil, replacing North Korea.
While Mr. Bush's relations with the English language have been hostile in the past, few had expected him to declare war on America's native tongue.
But according to Republican insiders, an official declaration of war against the English language could give Mr. Bush a decided edge over his Democratic rival, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who, unlike the president, speaks English fluently.
"If Kerry starts speaking English during the debates, he could be seen as a traitor," one Bush strategist said. "On the other hand, there's practically no danger of the president accidentally slipping into English."
Political science professor Trevor Bilson of the University of Minnesota said that Mr. Bush's declaration of war against the English language should not come as a surprise: "Mr. Bush has been conducting a covert campaign against the English language for decades now."
But Dr. Bilson believes that shifting the nation's focus from the war on terror to a war on grammar may be Mr. Bush's shrewdest political move ever.
"The president recently said that he doubts we can win the war on terror," Dr. Bilson said. "But whenever Mr. Bush does battle with the English language, the English language loses."
